Hello everyone!

Today we're bringing you some major changes for Film & Animation deviations, and also some new tools for deviantART muro and Sta.sh Writer!

Film Improvements

Film submission through Sta.sh

The first major change for Film is that Sta.sh is now properly equipped to support film submissions! While it was sort of possible in the past, Sta.sh can now store and submit film files the same way other filetypes can be stored and submitted.

Keep in mind that you have to have film submission privileges in order to submit films to deviantART. For more information on this, please read this FAQ: FAQ #842: How do I become a submitting member of the film community?

Film Deviation Page Changes

The second change is regarding the layout of film deviations. The old film layout was designed with an older version of deviantART in mind, and this change places Film submissions back up to speed with the rest of the site. The Film deviation page has been updated to the same layout other deviations have, for consistency, ease of use, and better overall appearance.

New Film by wreckling

While a film is playing, the artist's comments and comments left by other deviants will disappear, so that you can focus on the film without distraction or outside interference. As you reach a point in the film where other users have left annotations, these annotations will appear briefly, and then disappear again.

Film Playing by wreckling

When the video is paused, you'll be prompted with a comment box, so that you can leave annotations at specific points within the film, just like you could before this upgrade. This allows for an up-to-date look and feel without compromising functionality. In addition, comments left as annotations will include the time the comment was left, as easy reference for any deviant reading through the comments!

Film Paused by wreckling

Volume, resolution, and fullscreen controls are all present before the video even starts, for easy adjusting without having to search for options. In addition, when hovering over the resolution button, you'll be prompted with the various resolutions the filmmaker has offered for that particular film.

Creator Comments

The last change we have for Film is the inclusion of the Creator notification. Before, comments left by the creator of a film would be indistinguishable from other comments left on the deviation, which made it easy for the artist's thoughts and opinions to be buried among the rest of feedback left. As of today, comments left by the deviation creator can be distinguished with a lighter color, and a small box next to their username specifying  that they are the creator of that film.

Try it out! To give the new Film layout a try, just head to the Film & Animation gallery and watch some films!

If you encounter issues, be sure to report them! Any bugs encountered with the Film & Animation improvements can be filed in the #devBUG Issue Tracker under the Film Improvements project.

Updates to deviantART muro

More Tools for deviantART muro

Several new tools have been added to deviantART muro!
  • Elliptical selection options and a magic wand tool have been added to the marquee tool! Once the marquee menu button has been selected, the new options will appear in the bottom bar.

New Sta.sh tools by wreckling
  • Deviants can now create a selection based on the transparency of a layer by command/ctrl+clicking on that layer!
  • In addition to the options added to the marquee menu, "select by color", "expand selection", and "contract selection" tools have been added to the Edit menu!

deviantART muro Integration with Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer

For those of you not familiar with Sta.sh, it functions as a creative space for deviants to upload and save their art. For writers, creation has also been a part of the Sta.sh environment, with the addition of Sta.sh Writer. To help further the potential of creation, we've incorporated deviantART muro within Sta.sh! When in Sta.sh, deviantART muro can now be accessed from the Sta.sh menu in the top left corner.

The other new addition is the integration of deviantART muro into Sta.sh Writer! When in Sta.sh Writer, you can pull images from your Sta.sh to include in the Writer document, and those images will have a pencil menu button in the top right corner of the image. An option labeled "Edit in deviantART Muro" has been added to the pencil menu, and when selected, it will transfer you to deviantART muro to draw!

qsG6n by wreckling

Once you click Done in deviantART muro, the file will save, and you'll be returned to the Sta.sh Writer document to continue where you left off. That's all there is to it!

To test out the integration of deviantART muro into Writer, head to Sta.sh Writer!

Reporting Problems

If you encounter issues, be sure to report them! Bugs and issues with changes to deviantART muro can be filed in the #devBUG Issue Tracker under the deviantART muro Improvements project.

Today we're bringing you some major changes for Film & Animation deviations, and also some new things for deviantART muro! Beta testers, we'd like you to give them a spin!

I will admit that im pretty impressed with, the most recent Update, Much prefer having the ability to scroll to see more deviations.

With That being said, I believe it would be more practical for the Side to follow down the page as the user scrolled, Or even letting the entire outer frame scroll, Allowing the user to access all the menus even if they have scrolled through a 1000+ deviations.

I'm thinking the creator box should be on all deviations at least as an option.

Thats pretty cool. However, why not the "creator" commenting available for normal deviations?

Oooh yesyes! The additions to Muro are great and so useful!

I was a little confused at first about the additive and subtractive parts and what that meant. Now, I don't know if this will be a big issue for others as it was for me (I almost didn't try them out/use them because I didn't understand what it meant)
What if the tools were renamed to something along the lines of Select Lasso/wand and Deselect Lasso/wand. If I'm not mistaken, most programs refer to those tools as such and maybe it'll help other users instantly or more quickly recognize that tool and it's purpose?

In the future, what about a select/deselect pen too as well :3

Sounds good that you've made a few improvements to the Film settings. :)

In order to upload an animated film or live-action film, do we need premium membership or need to be an art student to do that? I've been seeing these films on DA but wasn't sure how those people were able to upload the films on DA.

You made this comment in your article: "While a film is playing, the artist's comments and comments left by other deviants will disappear, so that you can focus on the film without distraction or outside interference. As you reach a point in the film where other users have left annotations, these annotations will appear briefly, and then disappear again."

Some of the popular films have over 2,000 comments/annotations! As soon as one disappears, the next one appears. They blink on and off constantly throughout the entire film, totally ruining the whole viewing experience. There's nothing but "distraction" and "outside interference." Please give us the ability to turn them off.

it would be cool to have maybe a check box on a film to "Hide" annotations in that case. Or even a preference in your own account to turn them off entirely?

I tried with the film beta thing but honestly, the sound and picture were running at different speeds no matter which film I watched. I believe it's the overall speed of broadband internet in my country. Apologies for being no assistance this time.

For next year it'd be epic if deviants can collab in a muro-type setting and like *ambientdream mentioned chat with other artists- for an art based site I think we all kinda expect an application like that to be in the works at some point in the near future. Just sayn...

Love you lightningmonkey!!! You rock!!!! ^^

A suggestion: Add the option of adding a chatbox on Muro or integrating it with the dA chatrooms, to allow paint-chats :)

Creators comments are a nice feature but I think they should be a darkened a good bit, but not to to the point where it's hard to tell which comment is which.

Maybe if they made the CC's only slightly brighter than the "Default Comment Colour" (if that makes any sense) it wouldn't be as much as an eye-strain, since there could be a lot of contrast in colour if there were lots of comments from both the viewers and the deviant artist themselves.

I hope I made some kind of sense just there <.<
