This winter, we challenged you to close your eyes and tell us about winter without your sight, and we're happy to report back that several people took the challenge and turned it on its head! With a good amount of entries to work with, it was difficult to narrow it down to just three, so difficult in fact that even after consulting Halatia for help we couldn't do it! As such, we chose two honorable mentions to go along with the winners, because we felt these two also merited recognition.

Across Oxford in SnowPerambulating over ice-packed pavements
is a game I often lose. Today’s last square,
Economic Turmoil in the Eighteenth Century Novel.
Through thin-soled boots I fumble
cobbles’ curves; on Magdalen Bridge
one gloved hand is gripped by the rough balustrade:
left, forward two inches,
right, forward three,
left, forward four inches and one inch back.
How many more frictionless inches to go?
Ice slips through my boot-seams.
In the lecture I will have cold feet.
Inside, the tin air sounds with wisdom:
South Sea Bubbles, Swift, Pope, Defoe.
I hear only complaints of thawing toes.

Nil VisibilityAt dawn everything tastes of snow.
Crunching across the park, cheeks aftershave raw
every step sinking
thinking I'm Scott (or Amundsen, who lived)
the clag of Pemmican on my tongue.
By lunch it's turned to sleet; the snow to slush
nose snuffling, hands muffled in
gloves and mittens;
Breath dewed onto ticking wool,
wet bus seat damp, and warm.  Swarms
of frost fruit-flies
settling on my eyelashes.
No more crisp strides.  A slow
skid-shuffle; there's fuck-all grip.
Slipping on stealth ice, feet like ball bearings
on a sheet of toughened glass.
Twice I avoid
going arse over tit
then I hit an impasse.
The ground and I
conjoined by cold soles no more.
Feet fly wayward, skywards -
Land meets rump.  The thud
of a four-day bruise.
Embarrassment hits
like a blow to the spine with a chunk of pavement.
I lever myself,
hands splayed for purchase, squelching down
until I'm up.
Like a boat holed below the waterline
stranded on a frozen lake.

on becomingthe sound of rising: traffic on the road
and between siren and bird, the two keep rhythm.
everything falls apart, pre-collison you feel
the atria, the brass glow of the tuba,
stuttering out a tenor voice, this suffering.
the day pinches you out from your cave of
cotton and wool. the beginning of time
happens every morning. the city
disguises reflections with cloud and the asphalt
feasts on this darkness. wind makes your
skin secondary and like armour,
you become reptilian.
