Site Update: Add File to My Sta.sh

Thu Sep 19, 2013, 6:06 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Add File To My Sta.sh

Sharing your image files with friends just got easier! When you link a friend to a file in your Sta.sh, they will see an "Add file to my Sta.sh" button in the right column, so you and your friends can easily collaborate at any time, from anywhere, with the security and privacy provided by Sta.sh.

Change Log

  • The mobile website did not display in Firefox for mobile devices. Fixed by iconocrash
  • When viewing a Print preview, Wrapped Canvas Prints would not display the correct frame. Fixed by yury-n
  • Newly uploaded .ICO format files were not recognized as icons, and were unable to be submitted into the Customization > Icons categories. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • The "About" menu on one's Profile Page would be exceptionally long if the text in the "Real Name" field was long. Fixed by adahacker
  • An incorrect RSS url was given for the "Undiscovered" and "What's Hot" browse modes. Fixed by helloandre
  • Extremely tall and thin deviations would have distorted thumbnails. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • When viewing deviations in the Message Center, very long titles on some deviations could cause the "x Comments" link to be buried. Fixed by szlosek
  • On very wide monitors, the progress bar in the Donation widget was rendered incorrectly. Fixed by iconocrash
  • There was a small gradient issue on Profile Page tabs. Fixed by helloandre
  • The folder layout on one's Gallery and Favourites pages had extra margin space, causing custom backgrounds to display incorrectly. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • An extremely small number of images experienced color degradation or image inversion when a watermark was added to the image or the image was resized after submission. Fixed by yury-n and dgera
  • The alphabet selector on the left column of the Manage Friends page did not work for deviants with a very long Friends list. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Comments made on a deviant's Gallery or Favourites page did not appear on one's Activity page. Fixed by DEVlANT

Sta.sh

  • The "Add file to my Sta.sh" option was incorrectly appearing for logged-out visitors. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • The "Link" toolbar will now edit links your caret is on. Changed by kemayo
  • Some versions of Internet Explorer were adding extra HTML markup into comments. Fixed by kemayo
  • When in HTML mode, clicking to do something that required rich mode would load a modal as expected, but the "Yes" button in that modal had to be clicked twice in order to work properly. Fixed by kemayo
  • When scrolling in the emoticon sidebar, placeholders did not refresh correctly. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say:
  • Feedback regarding the update to the deviation page was positive.
  • A few deviants mentioned that they were having a hard time locating the deviation stats, and that they actually preferred viewing them beneath the deviation itself.
  • Some deviants mentioned that they were encountering internal server and search errors last week. These issues were handled by dt, and thank you for being vigilant in informing us of the issues.

Discuss!

Sta.sh
Since its launch, Sta.sh has been a multi-purpose tool that offers deviants a variety of options when creating, organizing, and submitting artwork. Outside of submission, how do you use Sta.sh? Do you share works in progress with friends and other artists? Do you collaborate with other artists by sharing parts of a larger work?

uh... all the profile tabs stuff is now pushed off to the far right. It's confusing, since i'm used to looking at it from the center. And for some reason all my correspondence says my stuff is deleted, even though my gallery is fine?

My Stash just disappeared. I have been using it for all this time and today there is no arrow or any other thing that even says I have Stash. I am using an old story to get into it by the back door.

I will be writing to the proper people later but this is not fun anymore. I use to really like dA before all these changes.

Remember when home brought you to your page instead of groups? It seems like just yesterday.

I use Sta.sh for...

- Submitting artwork and journals
- Uploading temporary stuff, like dA screenshots (mostly alpha/beta testing)
- Uploading art that must be reviewed (like WIP of a commission)
- Uploading something personal for another deviant

Hey dA, if you'd stop defaulting my layout to your shitty "Full View", that'd be great.

I picked "Wall of Thumbs View" for a reason...

I honestly don't use Sta.sh as it doesn't seem to offer anything much. Mainly it's the weird object in the corner that collects dust.

[it is to me though]
but, when I'm submitting work my sta.sh
it doesn't have the option to put
a watermark on my work and I'm just wondering
was it taken down

Hi there! It sounds like you've got Full View on. At the top right corner of the browse page, you should see these buttons:

You've probably got the right one clicked, which is full view. The left button is the default setting, which is a wall of thumbnails, and the middle button is a grid of thumbnails. Hope that helps! :)

Yeah no, I just realized you guys changed up the hidden comment feature, if someone comments to me about something and the owner of the page hides it, I want to see what it said, it could be something important, but noooo, you guys have it rigged to delete the comment entirely. Change it back, it was fine before. You can keep it to where if it's flagged as spam, it will be removed, but the other way? No.

I'm slowly warming to sta.sh. Past experiences (especially with Sta.sh writer) have left a bitter taste in my mouth, however some of my largest detractors seem to have been addressed in this update.

I'm disgruntled, but doing my best to keep an open mind.

"[...] how do you use Sta.sh?"
I don't. I just upload my work and that's it. I want to it to be as simple as possible.

Another thing which I see already has been mentioned here:
Where on earth did 3 month subscription dissappear to?

Currently I'm using my sta.sh to store character reference images for sharing or journals, that I don't want to upload to my main gallery or scraps.

I use Sta.sh for a lot of things including:

- Progress photos of cosplay.
- Reference images for cosplay.
- Hosting any images I want to send to someone by IM and email.
- Hosting images for forums.
- As general purpose photo albums. (for my photography at conventions)

Sta.sh makes all these tasks very easy and convenient.

(I guess many of those are not the intended use of Sta.sh but I don't see what else you could use 10GB for??)

3 month was a good deal but maybe they thought it was too good a deal.

I'm experiencing difficulties in submitting two paintings through STASH.  I completed two this evening/early am ~ submitted them following the rules ~ and the two paintings are no where to be found (at least not yet) and I don't know where they went.  They are not in my Gallery nor in my STA.SH.  Can anyone help?  Please.
Thank you for any advice you might be able to give me. :)

How about adding a small feature for whenever someone adds their year of birth when signing in..

If they add 2001 Or earlier as their birth year, A note would pop up next to it which might say "Are you sure this is your Year Of Birth? - According to the Community Guidelines, You have to be at least 13 Or over to join, If you continue to join stating your age as 12 Or under, The Staff could possibly temporarily close your account until you reach the required age." Including a link to the FAQ, That would save a lot of potentially under aged people from joining.

I just wanted DA To add a feature that's meant to note the people about the rules whenever they add their age as 12 Or less instead of letting them sign in and having to find out themselves.. I didn't like how they never get to do so even though it's extremely common for new Deviants to not know how to get to the FAQ And they often don't know that there's an age limit until a while after signing in.

I don't know if I'm the only one experiencing this, but for a while now, certain journals have become unreadable on my iPhone in mobile. What basically happens is that a journal with certain skins shift too much to the right, essentially cutting the journal in half.
This has been going on for quite a few months now. I'm not sure if it's the custom skin or just the way safari loads this sort of stuff, but it's definitely an error that doesn't happen on the regular version of the site. :/

~Shadow R/B
I thought it would be an error fixed by now, hence why I hesitated in bringing it up. It only affects certain journals; certain skins also don't cause this weird shift. Hm. :/

Hey!
This is just something that I'd like to know more about. Why did you guys remove the 3-month membership as a gift?
I crossed through a journal mentioning this, and the comments were rather negative towards this action.
If it's possible, why can't you guys keep all the options available anymore?
As far as I know, it would be more convenient for you guys,
since four of the three month membership costs more than the twelve one itself,
and it makes the community feel much more comfortable.

I use Sta.sh for both WIP sharing and feedback generation. A couple of weeks ago for instance I put a flash interaction on Sta.sh so I could ask a handful of people to try using it and give feedback that I have since been using to tweak it, allowing me to submit a better end product on full dA.

Lately I've been using mobile dA to check my messages on-the-go. One thing that's caught my attention (well, I mentioned it a few times on site update comments months ago but I'm finding it out again now) is that it's REALLY hard to press the X to delete messages because the icon is tiny on 4" devices. I've enabled a device setting that shows where I press, and even when the press does touch the X button it often loads the deviation (or even the one of the message above the one you want to delete) instead. This is irritating behaviour that could easily be fixed by making the delete button larger.

I do all of my uploading through Sta.sh nowadays. I also tend to hoard a lot of works-in-progress and show them privately to friends. I am rather pleased with this tool; however, one change I would like to see made to Sta.sh is for the submissions contained within to reflect any options set and saved on the following Submit page (still prior to submission to the Gallery/Journal; within Sta.sh itself). Even if we only look at the matter at the level of "Even a large image is best viewed at a certain size," there's just no good reason that we should be deprived of this control within the confines of Sta.sh. I'd like to be able to set the Display, Download, and the new "Add file" options and see them reflected within Sta.sh.
