In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Image Adjustments and Cropping in deviantART muro (Beta Testers)

A new set of tools have been added to deviantART muro for Beta Testers, for even more options when creating and editing artwork! The tools added include a way to crop images and make various changes to color settings, including contrast, tint, and color temperature. These changes give you an even broader means of creating dynamic works of art!

Change Log

  • The "My Journal" option when submitting a Journal has been renamed "Featured" for clarity and consistency. Changed by shahyarg
  • Various pronouns across the site were made consistent. Many instances of "my" were removed or changed to "your". This includes changing "my.deviantart.com/..." URLs to just "deviantart.com/..." Changed by muteor
  • Share buttons have been given a more prominent placement at the top of the deviation sidebar.  Changed by allixsenos
  • Uploading an image to the deviantID widget briefly stopped working. Fixed by muteor
  • There was an issue with adding files to Portfolio galleries. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The navigation calendar on the Daily Deviations page did not work properly. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Playback controls for deviantART muro redraws would not appear when browsing was set to zoomed in. Fixed by muteor
  • Some modals had incorrect backgrounds. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Clicking through pages on a deviant's Gallery would not always work. Fixed by muteor
  • Icons on the Manage Deviations page did not reflect the state of the deviation. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Sometimes ads would overlap modals when giving Points or purchasing Premium Content. Fixed by muteor
  • Some Group Galleries had display issues with some or all of their Gallery Folders. Fixed by randomduck
  • The Edit pencil icon would not appear on thumbnails in a Group's Featured folder. Fixed by muteor
  • A very small number of thumbnails would display smaller than intended, resulting in a slight upscaling. Fixed by shahyarg
  • +Watching deviants from the Manage Friends page did not always work. Fixed by muteor
  • When setting up or editing one's Porfolio, removing an image from one gallery and adding it to another caused a duplicate error. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Attempting to remove items from one's Wishlist did not work. Fixed by muteor
  • Help information for portfolio domain settings was incorrect. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Motion Book deviations would appear twice when browsing. Fixed by muteor
  • Some Premium Membership notifications would display on Group widgets. Fixed by allixsenos

deviantART muro

  • Partially transparent images made with DeviantArt muro were incorrectly shown with a shadow once saved to Sta.sh or submitted to deviantART. Fixed by mudimba
  • In some conditions, the "Watch Redraw" button would not work properly. Fixed by mudimba
  • When viewing a Redraw in Artist View, there were visual issues with some of the buttons. Fixed by mudimba
  • When resizing a Chrome browser window with deviantART muro open, a bug in the browser would make the checkerboard transparency background become mis-aligned. Fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh / Submit

  • When editing an item in Sta.sh, unchecking "download" in the publication settings no longer hides the downloads statistics of the sta.sh item. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Changing Premium Content settings after publishing a deviation would only work if the price was changed to something other than the default. Fixed by kouiskas
  • A saved Sta.sh item could be submitted to a locked category if the category settings had been saved before the category was locked. Fixed by drommk
  • A watermark would sometimes appear on a deviation submitted at original size. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • It was possible for the thumbnail adjust buttons to not appear, if the thumbnail was hovered over immediately after being added to Writer. Fixed by kemayo
  • Drawing on an image in DeviantArt muro and then returning to Sta.sh Writer would hide the resize handles for that image until you reloaded the page or switched it to a thumbnail and back. Fixed by kemayo
  • When leaving a comment in Sta.sh, dragging a file onto that Sta.sh item's page would cause an error if done before the sidebar opened. Fixed by inazar
  • Dragging images around inside of a Writer document would turn them into links in Chrome 26+ on OSX only. Fixed by inazar
  • Improvements were made to the HTML allowed when leaving comments in Sta.sh. Fixed by inazar
  • Sta.sh comments can now be submitted by pressing ctrl+enter (command+enter, for Mac). Fixed by inazar
  • Emoticons sidebar will now say "No matches" if there are no results, instead of remaining blank. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving comments in Sta.sh, opening two replies and then closing the first one would cause an error. Fixed by inazar
  • Improvements were made to Writer's ability to translate pasted text into formatting that is allowed on deviantART. Fixed by Alisey
  • Thumbnails for Motion Book deviations would appear broken in Writer documents until submitted. Fixed by Alisey
  • Pressing arrow keys could result in the page scrolling even when Writer had focus. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.
  • Deviants were mostly positive about the new Write a Journal Entry page. Some deviants voiced concern about not wanting to use rich-text or preferring to use HTML, and so we wanted to clarify for deviants who currently do not have access to Beta Testing. The new Write a Journal Entry page can be switched into HTML mode from the Edit menu, which lets you type purely using code and acts the same way that the old Write a Journal Entry page does.
  • Feedback on last week's discussion topic varied. Some deviants choose to look primarily at Featured folders and not explore the rest of deviants' Galleries, some like to explore specific folders, and others prefer to click Browse to view all of a deviant's Gallery at once.
  • When submitting deviations, some deviants place everything in their Featured folder, while others choose not to use the Featured folder, or only put what they consider to be their very best in the Featured folder.

Discuss!

The Journal Portal Categories
When submitting Journals, you can submit to a number of categories within the Journal Portal. Do you find these categories straightforward? Are there improvements that you would like to see made to the Journal Portal? Are there ones you would add, remove, or merge?

Sometimes when I re size an image, and I draw on it, it glitches on me and the lower half is just gone for some reason. It shows the upper half in the redraw, but as far as editing and presenting is concerned, its only showing the upper portion. Does anyone have any advice, or know any way to help on the matter?

I actually have a question, though I'm not sure if it's me, or if it's DA; when I used DA Muro before, it was perfectly fine, and I didn't have any problems with it. Now, since it's been updated, I can't change the size of the brushes ( or the eraser, for that matter ), and the color wheel refuses to allow me to change colors. My sister's been having the same problem, and we were wondering what is going on, and is there any way it can be fixed?

I'm not sure if this was mentioned or is even valid, but I'd like to inquire about sta.sh and deviation submissions. I just realized that now whenever you submit a .png / .gif file it duplicates itself in sta.sh and this is incredibly irritating to me -- when I attempt to delete the file in sta.sh, it actually DELETES ITSELF FROM YOUR ACTUAL GALLERY. Is this a bug or a glitch or was it intended? >:U

Request: Print Prompting

please allow people to remove the "your image is big enough to be made into a print" prompt.

yes, my image MAY be large enough to be made into a print, but my fan art contains intellectual property of other persons or entities, and i have no rights whatsoever to be selling these things as prints. there are several valid reasons for people not to offer prints.

it would be nice to say 'no, thank you.'

Just wanted to throw this out there.

I saw on my list of watchers, someone with a ! in front of their name. Deactivated their account.
Went to my list of watchers.
Had a watcher there with ! Had deactivated their account too.

Just a thought, but could you please do something so when someone deactivates their account and has you on their watch list ( or vice versa ) that name is removed and you get a notice saying ' ( blank ) has deactivated their account'.
That way we won't get stuck with a name on our watched or watchers list that we can't remove.

Please?

You can remove them. For deviants you watch, you can do it right from the "manage friends" section on the top right of DA and hit any remove button you want.

For deviants that watch you, I admit the process might be a bit more tedious:
Go to your personal settings -> general.
Browse down to the blocked user list and enter the name of the deviants you want to see vanish from your watcher list. Save.
You can clear the list afterward; they're gone for good. :)

But I agree that I'd like to receive a notice when someone deactivates and the backup time runs out (since you can reactivate under a certain time limit). For when they're banned I'm not as sure...

that's a really unsubstantiated claim. Everyone would love it if they put it back to a button like we've been begging for for months..but just because you see the button once inawhile isn't any proof that's what they're doing.
I've learned to never get my hopes up about Deviantart as they will always be disappointed by the wall of ignore.

I have a suggestion. We have been getting a lot of spammers and robot accounts scamming those of DeviantArt. Isn't there any way you can diminish these robot accounts from spamming the wall of DeviantArt with their advertising instead of dealing with them when they create said accounts? I mean they don't affect me any, but they're just so irritating to see when I'm going through the new submissions and there's a spam of pictures about whatever they're trying to advertising. (usually they're about "free points") Isn't there a system you can implement for new users signing up to weed out all of the robot accounts from signing up? Only a suggestion.

....While the people who are incessantly complaining about the changes are annoing me a great deal... Some of them do have a point.
Many of these recent changes have done little but confuse me and, honestly, I have found that they cause me to feel so uncertain about how to do things that I was for a time only looking at other people's works, rather than submitting my own (many of which were sitting in stash, awaiting their time to be put up.) Partially because the new submission method takes twice as long, so I found it harder to justify using the limited dA time I had in my hectic schedule to submit art to dA.

Also, when I get a watch message in my inbox that says, "This deviation is no longer available," it is absolutely and infuriatingly annoying. And... It would be very, VERY nice if devWatch messages could be automatically sorted into two separate folders (i.e.: individual deviants, and groups) within the deviations, journals, etc. categories.

I apologize... I'm a bit grumpy this morning... Not sure why... I guess I'm just sick of seeing so many comments on these site updates that are griping the admins out (COME ON guys! The admins work very hard to run the site so that dA can even exist!!!) and then seeing stuff like "Deviants were mostly positive..." in the very next site update (I know they shouldn't be griping... but can we at least be honest here?)

So, with all due respect and gratitude to the amazing people who run this site, can we please start making some of the changes that people are asking for? I like what I read today about the additions to the Muro system... but please can we start, say, auto-organizing Watch messages and doing other things that people are asking for?

I think the main problem is that dA is rolling out way too many major changes in way too short a period of time, and they're also trying to "fix what isn't broken." It's also angering a lot of people that dA seems to be completely ignoring all the negative feedback on these changes.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the larger browsing thumbnails or the new upload page, but I really hate the way More Like This has changed to be more invasive and obnoxiuos. However, I noticed VERY widespread anger and dissatisfaction about the enlarged thumbnails and the new submit page, not to mention MLT, and I can't understand why dA so adamantly persists in revamping every aspect of the site when everyone liked how it was before and are vehemently protesting the changes.

Even though I do like the big thumbs and am neutral on the submit page, I don't feel like they were worth angering 80% of the site's active users for, and I will never forgive dA under they get MLT back under control like it was before.

Anyway, to get back to the point, I do understand that the dA staff puts a lot of hard work and effort into running this site. I was generally supportive of them up until the MLT fiasco. I am just extremely dissatisfied with the way they seem to be ignoring user feedback, and I feel like they should be focusing more on fixing glitches and improving current features rather than changing everything so drastically.

Yep. What they NEED to add, is a widget on the Submit page that automatically stamps a custom (c) message at the end of the description so that we don't have to write out disclaimers that we use frequently over and over and over again.
I'm still new to the whole social media thing, so I guess I'm still 'pliable' enough to roll with a few things... but I agree. They need to stop fixing what isn't broken.
...And reduce the number of thumbnails in the MLT box by half... I keep going on little art binges through More Like This. The thing is addictive!!!
...Which is why I agree that it ought to be less promenant.

With the recent breaking if my laptop an being unable to access deviantART aside from on my phone I am bothered by the fact that I am unable to read certain journals because only half of it (vertically) shows. I also find that certain buttons like the sharing and remove ones overlap a lot while I'm using dA.
Obviously because I can't write journals right now I have no journal feedback but perhaps it would be a nice feature (If possible) to add to the mobile version.

You guys should be focusing on the things that people WANT to have changed, and things that NEED to be changed, not what you admins think should be changed.

1. Not many people actually care about sta.sh, so why does it have priority in the updates over everything else? I can see why lolly used to get so mad at your "updates" and sta.sh.
2. Why are you still not purging inactive and deactivated accounts? Is it because if you saw just how many of your millions of "users" were inactive you wouldn't have such an awesome number of users to boast?
3. deviantART uses the same numerical id system as the likes of Twitter, so why do you make out it's some major technical process to change usernames when other sites allow you to do it everyday (without having to be a paying customer, I might add!)
4. Why have you changed the premium membership to 12 and 24 months? Who's bright idea was that one?
5. Stop ignoring people over the More Like This. We're not asking for it to go, just put the artists gallery links above it, it's not hard!

I love this site, I really do, but with each update you guys bring where I see you're just changing yet more useless things that end in yet more useless and annoying bugs, it's getting really hard to want to stay loyal to this site and not move elsewhere. You've lost your fun-ness and direction. I want to see you making the big changes that people have been wanting for years, or just leave the site alone.

Accounts are never deleted, on any service that allows you to make an account whatsoever. Reasons include (but are not limited to) off-site linking, access to billing history, and previous activity.
People only seem to have a problem with apparently inactive accounts when they want their names - frankly, that doesn't justify turning the entire system around 180 degrees.

I agree accounts are never deleted on sites - however, inactive usernames are purged and only the membership id number remains on a lot of online community sites. I mean no ones going to fight over a database number, but usernames (especially to artists) can mean absolutely everything to them. Especially to professional artists who have all of their usernames as their business name to save confusion; it gets pretty annoying to have goodness knows how many aliases and potential customers would have difficulty remembering them if they're names are always different.

I disagree with the justification of it though - it's a very good reason to purge inactive account names, as well as the deactivated account names. A lot of people can't use the name that they want to use, or they have to come up with some really random way of spelling it because a lot of the time that username is taken by someone who hasn't visited the site since 2004. It's not turning the system around 180 degrees at all, it's not as complicated as a lot of people make it out to be. It's simply removing inactive account numbers from the active database and storing them in a background database instead, freeing up the usernames and allowing others to use them instead.

"but usernames (especially to artists) can mean absolutely everything to them."
All the more reason not to "purge" them, even if, according to your impression, the account(s) in question isn't/aren't and will never be used again. 'Sides, I've already listed technical reasons which can't be ignored.

Browse. Always. And personally I find it inane that you are taken to Featured by default, and then manually have to click Browse.

I go directly to Browse. Always.

In fact, when saving the url's of users, I just go ahead and "gallery/?catpath=/" to the end of the url, so I go straight to Browse. (as opposed to having to load the profile page, then click "Gallery", then wait, then having to click "Browse". Oh, puh-lease!)

What I'd like to know is why we can't 'delete' journal skins after loading them. I mean, I have a skin that I loaded but never used. And now I want to get rid of it can't find a way to do so.
How do I get rid of journal skins I've never used?
