In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Image Adjustments and Cropping in deviantART muro

Last week, we launched a new set of tools for DeviantArt muro to Beta Testers, and thanks to the efforts of the Beta Testers in reporting bugs, and mudimba's quick work fixing those bugs, we are launching these tools to everyone!
  • The new "Adjust" panel allows you to adjust a variety of color settings, including contrast, tint, and color temperature. These changes can be applied to an individual layer or the whole image, giving you an even broader means of creating dynamic works of art!
  • Crop your artwork by selecting a portion of the canvas and then selecting the "Crop to Selection" option from the Edit menu.
  • Add annotations to works in progress by clicking on the yellow Annotation button in the toolbar.

Change Log

  • Trying to delete an item from one's Wishlist would cause an error. Fixed by muteor
  • The T-Shirts & Gear Shop was saying that everything was sold out. Fixed by allixsenos
  • A number of fixes were made to category selection when submitting a Journal from the Write a Journal Entry page. Fixed by kemayo
  • The Manage Members page of Group Admin Areas did not display properly on mobile devices. Fixed by yury-n
  • When browsing, an incorrect cursor would appear on the "Show More" link. Fixed by shadowhand
  • There were issues with using a browser's back button after visiting a deviation from a search results page. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Affiliate" button on Groups was still clickable, even if a deviant did not have permission to request affiliates. Fixed by yury-n
  • In the Message Center, the "Move" button menu would remain visible even after all items were removed. Fixed by muteor
  • Giving a Premium Membership will now trigger a thank you message for the buyer. Fixed by yury-n
  • Loading times when viewing a deviation from the More Like This section of a deviation page have been improved, and results can now be navigated using the "Previous" and "Next" buttons or your keyboard's arrow keys. Fixed by allixsenos
  • There were positioning issues for small thumbnails, such as emoticons, in More Like This on deviation pages. Fixed by allixsenos
  • Terminology used on the Share buttons on deviation pages have been updated to reflect branding guidelines for their respective websites. Fixed by allixsenos
  • The banner ad on deviation pages would display on the deviation's Edit screen, for some users. Fixed by ZombieCoder
  • When browsing a Portfolio's gallery, going to the next item would initially show previous item again before displaying the correct item. Fixed by shadowhand

DeviantArt muro

  • There were some visual issues when using deviantART muro while logged out and with third-party cookies disabled. Fixed by mudimba
  • In rare conditions, flipping a canvas could cause problems with saving. Fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh / Submit

  • There was an error when using "Move to Sta.sh" from inside of a stack. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Error messages about the amount of space in Sta.sh were expressed in bytes, which could be unclear. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Copying Sta.sh links from the menu that appears when hovering over a Sta.sh item was not working in Firefox. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Share button titles appearing on hover were only visible to the sta.sh item owner. Fixed by kouiskas
  • .PSD, .TIFF, and similar image file types can now be submitted as Prints. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Some users were unable to replace a file, when editing deviations. Fixed by kouiskas
  • In the Premium Content step of the submission and editing process, the modal for the Terms and Conditions was too tall. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • For Beta Testers, the new method of writing Journals has been disabled for mobile devices. Fixed by inazar
  • "Show more" would always display in the Sta.sh section of the sidebar, even if there was no more to show. Fixed by inazar
  • If a user logged out and logged back in while Writer was open, the toolbar would display incorrectly. Fixed by inazar
  • Some improvements were made to the animation of the sidebar, when leaving comments in Sta.sh. Fixed by inazar
  • Literature deviations were sometimes not included in a deviant's Gallery Stats. Fixed by inazar
  • Tab characters would be translated to "nbsps" when switching to or from HTML mode. Fixed by inazar
  • For Mac users in Chrome 26, images dragged into a document would be replaced with links. Fixed by Alisey
  • Film thumbnails would display oddly when dragged or dropped. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were pleased with the new tools for deviantART muro.
  • Feedback regarding the Journal Portal varied. Some deviants mentioned that they didn't see a need for so many categories for Journals, and others mentioned that they weren't aware the category could be changed to begin with.
  • Some deviants would like to be able to replace deviation files with files from their Sta.sh. Suggested by Ankh-Ascendant
  • Deviants would find it helpful if Polls they have voted on would indicate which option they voted for. Suggested by Miguel-Santos

Do something about :icondeviantartsecret:. It's getting out of control, and definitely not in keeping with the values of this website. You need to fix that category (why they have their own is seriously beyond us) which they have. People are unhappy that they are seeing stupid chunks of inartistic text on the front page.

Normal user should be able to change their username at least once a year, and if you have a premium membership you can change it as many times as you want or once a month or something.

Suggestion: Any way possible to add in a calender section for each user to mark down something important like end dates to any contests or even better marks to friends b-days. and also notifications on when they're going to be after a set alarm on so many before. maybe even multiple notification can be set. an dby notifications like a natural message in the message box.

Just be cool to have, at least I think so. Cause its hard to remember when some contests end.

Wow DA Muro has become so much better than I ever thought it would. It's a great way for people who don't want to spend money on programs to practice digital art. Really proud of DA for this.

I feel like the only artist who likes to play with Muro. :< Sure I don't use it for serious works but it's a fun app to doodle in like an oekaki board.

I'd like to see more painting features. Maybe a line-smoothing tool. I really doubt photographers use it and stuff as much as people use it for doolding. The Adjustments panel should be helpful though!

Hey, weeklong, I posted a while ago on your profile with a link to a glitch that I found. Have you addressed that yet? I just want to know if that glitch I found was being fixed, because it was really annoying.

I barely received comments on my Gallery and Favourites.
There were only two or three I suppose, at least one of them thanking me for the favourite.

How often do you receive comments on your Gallery or Favourites?
Very, very rarely. Maybe a few times a year, if that. I can see why people may want to comment on my gallery folders, but why my favourites? If they like them, they can favourite them themselves. If they want to say 'thanks for the fave', why not go to my profile to do that and see that I want a llama instead? XP Commenting on favourites does not seem necessary to me.
Do you often make comments on others' folders?
No, I comment on individual deviations instead of galleries, and profiles if I really want to thank someone for something.
Do you find this feature useful? If so, what do you find it useful for?
n/a

Thanks for the bug fixes :) However, I and many others are still not happy about MLT. Please could you address our concerns? Your deliberate ignorance is disrespectful, and the longer this goes on, the more frustrated and angry you are going to make us. And I really, really don't want to grow to dislike this amazing site.

There is one thing that I dislike about sta.sh writer: (which might be a bug :P)
If I am writing a Journal with the old journal writing system I was able to deselect "the Journal portal" and the "featured" section. (This is also possible with "new, old submission system" which is in beta testing right now)
Now if I write a Journal with sta.sh writer I have to select at least one of them.
If I pick "Journal Portal - personal" I can deselect "featured", but If I submit it in "my Journal" I can't deselect "featured". I would have to submit it and then edit it again, then I am able to deselect it. :o

And the only reason why I had to use sta.sh writer to write the Journal is that we can't disable comments with the old system. :stare:

"Have a suggestion, idea, or feedback? Leave a comment on this article!"

This most likely is NOT going to be read, judging by the site's track record with pleasing its users lately, but here goes:

Stop with the updates to stuff like Muro and Sta.sh -- stop pushing them. Instead, focus on the important things such as either overhauling the reporting system (e.g for art theft or pornography, both massive violations I've seen on the site that go unremoved despite being reported) or adding more staff to take care of the tickets. The only way to get the offending parties on a leash is to crack down hard.

Hell, maybe a system like reverse Google Image Search could be implemented.
1: An artist, the original creator or someone recognizing the image, spots a thievery.
2: They submit a ticket. They give the usual evidence.
3: A system could then compare the two for identical features (idk if this work work well with recolours, but it could check the lines I guess), and remove the thievery one. To help safeguard against thieves using this to remove the original, it would also check the dates of each deviation against each other and remove the newest one -- almost always going to be the thievery, for obvious reasons.

uhm... what is this "deviantArt Muro" thing exactly? ...you keep writing a lot about changes to it,but I've never seen an explanation about what it's for and how to find it... From the image above it looks like some kind of online photo editor, but it could be anything I guess..

(same goes for that "Sta.sh" thingie by the way... wtf is it, really?

"Comments on Gallery Folders and Favourites"

Fortunately I don't receive too many comments on my favourite folders.
And it's perfectly fine, because once a deviant left me comments more than 50 emoticons, and it looked really horrible in that folder, and I had to hide it. ^^; I think I'm fine without incidents like that one.

Sometimes I wish I could disable the comments in the gallery and favourite folders.
It's enough to clean the profile page from the pointless or spam messages or aggressive self-advertising.

And I don't comment too often on other deviant's favourite folders.
It happens that I say thanks for friends, but most of the time I don't talk with them in the favourite folder :giggle:
... or if I see that someone included my work in a really nice collection... because that's an honor.
But I don't see the point of commenting when someone favourited my work so obviously randomly with every kind of things whatever they saw on the newest deviations page ^^; It happens a lot.
And some people basically hate when they get too many "thanks for fav" messages. So if I have nothing else to say, then I don't comment.
But many times I look into the gallery and the favourites of those who faved my works, especially if the favourite folder has a good name and makes me curious. I found many nice things too in this way. :)

Actually gave it a try , it's a lot harder to use with the mouse to draw , think I need an IPad to work with it effectively, still like it even though it was surprisingly new to me haha

No! iPads are insanely expensive. Get a Wacom tablet (the cheap ones are fine!). It takes a little bit of practice, but if you start by handwriting and then progress to drawing once you're accurate, you'll be painting in no time.

The ability to see if someone is watching you.
Adding a delete comment button.
Delete inactive accounts. There are trillions of them that just exists taking up available names, etc.
The ability to upload music. Yes, it's also a form of art.
More features for premium members. ( not less for the non-premium members )
An entirely separate page for commisions. However only premium members could list them selves, making more people likely to become premium members :)
Some way to further personalize your user page.
