Autocomplete for Mentions (Beta Testing)

We've just launched an addition to the Mentions feature that makes it easier than ever to interact with your friends! Now, when you begin typing a username after the "@" symbol, you'll see a list of deviants you +Watch and other deviants.

dAmn It To Be Phased Out

The deviantART community is always growing and changing. To keep the site fresh and relevant, we need to focus on what's important. Recently, we've been going through site features and settings to assess usage, traffic, community reception, and how the feature helps contribute to deviantART's goals.

dAmn It, the system where deviants can submit and vote on funny quotes from Chat (originally called "dAmn" or deviantART Messaging Network), is a feature that gets extremely low usage and traffic.

On November 30, 2013 dAmn It will be officially phased out. Until then, the feature has been removed from the main site navigation but will still be available via the Chat page for those who want to archive any quotes.

Mentions Spam Prevention

Deviant and art Mentions were launched roughly one month ago and we've kept a close eye on how deviants have been adopting the feature. In most cases, deviants have shared artwork with others, featured art they love, and brought other deviants into deeper conversation. However, in a small handful of instances, deviants have tried to exploit Mentions for nefarious reasons  like sending spam. In response, we've put limitations in place that are designed to prevent spammers from abusing the feature, while also ensuring that deviants who are using Mentions properly are not affected. We'll continue to monitor usage going forward, to ensure that your Mentions experience is a good one.

Can you add an activity log to a group's home page? I hate submitting to a dead group and being able to have the whole "latest deviation added" thing like on a regular user page could prevent that.CURSE YOU!

Ohai! Again as I have commented on a few of these before it would be amazing if you could add a search feature to the favourites section. I hate clicking through all the pages to find one thing.

Sad to see Damn It go! :c I never knew that the feature existed on my 4 years of being on dA. Looking through it, I've gotten some pretty great laughs and now I'm sad that I won't be able to later.

hoping this is a glitch or something but when i try to type in the artist comment it starts saving after each letter and doesn't give me a chance to break before saving. Makes my typing lag really bad :/ please let this be a glitch and not something permanent

Can you explain how you prevent mentions spam? Just curious.

About stats: I like checking my stats. Though I think they should be redesigned. While Favourites and Comments tabs are quite obvious, the Timeline part has been always a mystery to me and there is no legend for it. I mean, I can assume more or less by the options available to tick and all but IMO it's confusing and not very readable. The Time tab isn't really necessary but it's interesting. Breakdown seems to be a summary of Time and Galleries tabs though, so I don't know if it really should be there.

As for new stats I'd like to see, I think it could be useful if there would be some for Downloads, Watchers or how many people installed your Journal Skin. For watchers it could be some chart showing when you get new ones and how many but maybe also what is watched by them - I think it would be really helpful to know how many of your watchers (without names) actually reads your Journal etc. I probably had more ideas but can't remember now =P

$wreckling I have a suggestion for the mobile site! I think taking down the yellow banner at the top of the site that redirects one to the legacy site would be a good move. I often click on the banner by accident and am redirected. Relocating the link to the area where you can select the desktop site would be reasonable.

I'm starting to think the admins of deviantART are taking other (small) ideas from different socializing websites and using them to make dA better, along with their own ideas, of course.

I think that things, all this changing, early will ruin DA! This is not Facebook! I think we don't need to be tagged in the others comments, ok?? What's the problem, really i dont understand! There already are all this symbols that personally are disturbing me...so, what's my suggestion? Let's go back.

About the whole mentions thing, it was done because people wanted to know who were talking about them, and bringing people into conversations. Also very useful for art features (getting a huge flow of traffic for reasons unknown, or having to notify people if they were featured if the maker wishes to do so). Also, stock providers would find it useful in finding out who used their stock and what for (most people don't link their creations to the stock provider if not asked).

So, it's a lot more useful here than on Facebook. And if you don't like it, there's always the option of going into your settings and turning off mentions notifications.

Just my reasoning for why it was brought into dA.

All your reasons are good, but there are too many changes in a short time, no one has time to get used to. I think it can also be useful to mention the thing, but the first day in which it was inserted, I received a statement saying that I was quoted in the journal of that person and then it was not true, when things go wrong they put little to enter my dislike.
For example,
I do not even know what they mean all the symbols that you have entered, I can not store them as a result of all these changes.

Well, in any way,
my protest, in turn, will be taken a dislike because I'm a traditionalist u_u Nevermind, I do not care, it is important that you do NOT change the color of DA!

So when it says Beta testing, does that mean it's being tested as of currently by the beta testers to see if it's going to be used, or does that mean that it's a new feature that is ready but can only be used by Beta testers?

Suggestion: Sta.sh version for prints. It would be a page where can upload the HQ version of your work, edit its placement, the products types and prices, saving everything for a later publication.

i cant say much about the art aspect because i cant really draw that well but the sta.sh submissions would be easier if the sight wouldnt keep saying none of my stories fit the catigories. everyhting else seems to work fine though.

I love looking at my gallery stats and I wish that there was more information available, like views over time, instead of just over the past month. Graphs a la Google Analytics would be really awesome, for both general gallery and individual deviations. Information about where my deviations are being shared online would be great too - I guess that would be tracked by looking at what external sites visitors are coming from.

Also, I wish journal entries and scraps didn't count as deviations.

I like the autocomplete, I think it will make mentions easier and faster especially for those who watch lots of people. Though I think the list should include your watchers as well, because you also interact with them quite a bit--and watchers' features seem to be gaining popularity all the time

Thank you for fixing the journal issue, I thought it was supposed to open in stash (which was pretty annoying), but I'm glad it's fixed now! :)

Regarding gallery stats, I use them mostly for viewing other deviants' stats, which is why I think it's a shame all of them aren't available for regular members. I think some of the tabs are unnecessary (timeline, galleries, time, breakdown), because that information can pretty much be found in the summary tab. Comments and favorite tabs per deviation are really interesting (regarding both my own and other people's galleries), and I think a views tab would be a great addition to this.
I also think that in one's profile page, in the dropdown stats next to your pageviews, the number of people you watch should be included next to the amount of people who watch you. I don't think this is a piece of information you should be able to hide, as some people use it to exaggerate their popularity and spam-watch people.

One thing I really dislike about the new updates is that when a link is posted, it appears as a large, abbreviated link. It's really unattractive and clutters up journals and artist comments.. I really miss how it used to always appear as "[link]". I've actually been making them manually with HTML tags because I liked that setup. I understand the change in theory, because now you can tell if someone is diverting you somewhere irrelevant before clicking on it, but I still miss the old "[link]". Perhaps going back to it and adding a mouse-over tag with the full address?

:iconimmerot:

I think that was the method of inducing dA-users to treat with Sta.sh Editor: the reason of 'someone diverting you somewhere irrelevant' is less conclusive cause that someone still can create a link with that "[link]" customary appearence (though it would be less handy for them).
