Site Update: Bug Fixes and Feedback

Thu May 2, 2013, 5:58 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

  • Cosmetic changes were made to labels on the Sign Up and Login pages and modals. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The SitBack button was not consistent between the Browse page and Profile Galleries. Fixed by muteor
  • Deleting old Journal entries resulted in one's deviation total decreasing by 2. Fixed by kemayo
  • Username changes did not update the alphabetical sort on the friends page, and would instead show the updated username where the old username would go. Fixed by shadowhand
  • There was an issue where an "upgrade browser" banner would display in Internet Explorer 8, a supported browser. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Reloading one's browser while on the Give Premium Membership page would cause an incorrect price of the selected item to display. Fixed by yury-n
  • For some deviants, the orange progress bar of the Donation widget did not display properly. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The "Previous" and "Next" buttons would not work, when trying to view more deviations from a Profile's Gallery widget than were displayed inside the widget itself. Fixed by muteor
  • Zooming in on an image in one's Portfolio would not show the full size image. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The Help Desk's Contact page incorrectly claimed that the most recent version of the Opera browser is unsupported. Fixed by shadowhand
  • When browsing deviations from the Message Center and then returning to the Message Center using 'All' button, only three stacks would be visible in an IE browser. Fixed by muteor
  • The Sell page was updated to include all the products users can sell on deviantART. Fixed by yury-n
  • There was a small cosmetic issue with Profile widgets. Fixed by shadowhand
  • For Internet Explorer users, when browsing deviations from the Message Center and then clicking the browser's Back button, the deviantART homepage would display instead of the Message Center. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Notify" update Devwatch Messages from some very popular users were delivered to only a small subset of watchers under some circumstances. Fixed by muteor
  • Group Messages could not be accessed from the Message Center of the mobile site. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The St.sh API would occasionally time out for deviants with a large amount of files in their Sta.sh. Fixed by yury-n
• For deviations flagged as Mature Content or with Sharing options disabled, their thumbnails did not match their backgrounds. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The Manage Wishlist page was visually updated. Fixed by muteor
  • Issues were encountered with links in descriptions for some literature deviations. Fixed by muteor
  • Dragging to collect thumbnails from the More Like This on deviation pages was not working correctly. Fixed by allixsenos
  • There were some display issues with the oAuth "Authorize application" screen. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The "Choose a Deviation" modal would not appear on a Group's Gallery page after selecting "Contribute an Existing Deviation" from the Submit menu. Fixed by muteor

DeviantArt muro

  • Redraws would sometimes not play properly, if third party cookies were disabled. Fixed by mudimba
  • In a very rare case, the color picker could get "stuck" on black. Fixed by mudimba
  • Due to a bug in the Chrome browser, changing zoom settings could cause the checkerboard background (used to show transparency of your drawing) to be drawn in the wrong place. Fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh / Submit

  • When uploading a non-image file in Chrome, a broken thumbnail would be displayed. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Reorganizing files in a stack via drag and drop briefly stopped working. Fixed by yury-n
  • Literature thumbnails in the category examples would be incorrectly displayed above the category menu. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Safari would incorrectly display a confirmation box about unsaved text in fields when closing the window or tab. Fixed by kouiskas
  • For a small amount of deviations, a submitted deviation file would linger in Sta.sh after being published. Fixed by yury-n

Sta.sh Writer

  • Deviations without a preview image would incorrectly offer a "Draw" option on hover. Fixed by kemayo
  • Clicking "New Draft" from the File menu would result in a blank screen. Fixed by kemayo
  • Trying to embed a file deviation into Writer would result in a bad link. Fixed by kemayo
  • Improvements were made to the way Writer embeds images. Fixed by kemayo
  • Clicking to draw on an image immediately after drawing on a different image would sometimes replace both images with the first image. Fixed by kemayo
  • When including Community Emoticons from the sidebar, they wouldn't link to the original deviation. Fixed by kemayo
  • Embedding HTML didn't work for Film deviations. Fixed by Alisey
  • A large green square would occasionally display in the bottom right corner. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were generally positive regarding the new tools in deviantART muro.
  • In regard to comments on Gallery and Favourites folders, several deviants mentioned that they had never received any. For those deviants who have received comments on a Gallery or Favourites folder, several mentioned that they did not find it exceptionally useful.
  • Deviants would like stats for how many people view their Gallery, in addition to specific deviations. Suggested by Fehnwrites
  • Some deviants would like an "Exit without Saving" option for deviantART muro. Suggested by FantasyLost
  • Deviants would like a line smoothing tool for deviantART muro. Suggested by daPatches
  • Some deviants would like to download artwork drawn in deviantART muro as a Redraw video file. Suggested by YoSop

Recent Visitors
Premium Members can install the Recent Visitors widget to their Profile, which will then display the five most recent visitors to their Profile as a list, as a set of icons, or both. Do you have the Recent Visitors widget displayed on your Profile? How often do you check it? What do you find most useful about it? What ways would you like to see it improved?

I've got two random suggestions.

the first would be to have a quick little status bar on profiles. Something that the user can update regularly with short notices, and send messages to their watchers. For updates important enough that they wnat their watchers to be notified, but no so important or lengthy they want to make an entire journal just to remind them the contest is ending next week.
i think this would work really well for quick reminders and updates. Just things like 'contest ends next week' or 'kiriban at 200 000' or 'opening commissions soon - keep an eye out for more info!'
i know a lot of people use polls and journals for this, but i think that's sorta misusing those features.

the other one would be to have an easily accessable link the most recent site update. Maybe down in the bottom bar eith the dd's and top 5 five journals.

Deleted a file from my stash, but the direct link to the image is still valid more than two weeks later....

Whats the point of deleting the file if its still accessible to people???? Sent in a ticket to your help desk and have yet to receive a response as well.

For some reason I can't submit any of my art into stash or even use submit. I have firefox as a web browser. I really starting to get annoyed. Sometimes it works then it just goes blank. Same with some of my message box.

I did use recent visitors and kept it viewable only to me. I'm not sure if I still have it installed or not, but I do have a look every so often. It's not that I really find anything "useful" about it, I'm just nosy and I like having stats of all kinds!

I would like if there were something like "last visitor history" so you could see who visited your page and when they did it. It would also display more members. Because I have this vidget but I find if kinda useless since, I can not see all who visited my page and when they did it. I can only see like 5 last visitors. It kinda bothers me.

I think there should be a feature to edit and/or remove our own comments, there are times I've seen someone accidentally submit a comment and they either mess something up or submit it too early. And there are times they try to reply to someone but they accidentally reply to the deviation or to the wrong person and I can't fix it because the comment is stuck there.

I like the new format of the "Submit" page, however it would be nice to be able to upload more than one file at a time, like we used to be able to. It was much more convenient being able to just pick which photo I wanted from the ones I'd uploaded and type up the info instead of having to look through my computer every single time I want to submit something.

Hi there! You can still do this, actually. If you click "Select file from Sta.sh", you can drag several files into the modal that appears, and all of the files will upload to your Sta.sh, and from there you can select and submit them one at a time. I hope that helps! :)

Nice updates and stuff but I think we need some form of capcha on new users to cut down on the insane amount of spammers hitting the site. Seriously 2,500 posts+ before a mod can get to it and user names getting eaten up by robots is not really okay.

Ok, so I am wondering why on the journal page, if you add your mood and what ur listening to, or watching etc, it stays the same for every journal entry if you don't change it? why doesn't it go back to the original settings after you write a new journal entry? To me that would make things easier. Also, if you could just type in a mood, instead of having to click through the list of emoticons every time, that would make things a lot easier. It is just a suggestion and I'd appreciate it if you all at deviant art would consider it... thanks for reading, :)

I have and very much like the recent visitor's widget. I wouldn't say it's useful, exactly, but I like it there. It makes me smile when I see people I recognize or are friends with come and visit my page. Sometimes when I see someone I don't know, I check out there page too.

I may be wrong but I can't see the read/unread function in messages related to user profile. The notification icon shows total 40 messages, I've read them all, it still shows 40 messages. So... I can't tell if there are any new messages or notifications etc on my profile.

It would be really, really great if you could please address the concerns your users, both paying and non-paying, STILL have over More Like This.

You've responded to feedback over stuff like Muro updates, which do not affect the experience of the site anywhere near as much as MLT does, so why not this? You're just giving us further proof that you're happy to give yourselves a huge public pat on the back when people like your smaller, less important changes, while at the same time steadfastly ignoring, for months, any outrage and mass dislike over something drastic. It's ridiculous, and, as I've said many times before, utterly disrespectful.

Surely the whole point of asking for feedback is to listen to it, respond to it, and act upon it?

yeah people think dA is like tumblr or other social networking places where they can pile a whole heap of gifs or flashy things that chew up lots of internet usage every time you visit their page... and the worst is when it lags or takes forever to load all the images etc. :/

Sounds like a connectivity issue whose roots are somewhere between you and their servers, because it loads fine for me and I live in Europe; that's something that dA can't fix, but you could probably consult your ISP, if this problem happens on other sites you visit, as well.

Recent visitors... I rarely end up on other people's profiles (I always go directly to the gallery if possible) and I don't really care who happens to have seen my profile recently.
However, I can imagine it being useful for some people, and I have nothing against it. It's just a feature I personally never would use or care about.

Ever since I got my subscription, I love to check the recent people who've come to my page. I might place my page somewhere and just to see that people actually cared to click the link makes me happy. It's not a must have but just a little confidence booster.

I did have the recent visitors widget on my page way back when I had a premium account. I quite liked it because I'm curious about who visits my page sometimes (I saw some quite interesting people pop up a few times, haha), and I could go and visit them back when I had time/was bored. However, it did make me paranoid about visiting other people with the widget, in case they see me dropping by without faving or commenting on anything and get sad/offended xDxD

I started to use Stash Writer to post journals on the group I'm founder of instead of posting the journal directly from the journal section (because I like more the stash writer way) but I realized that there's an important difference, if I post the journal from the journal section then if someone write a comment that comment will show up on the group's messages so all the admins gets the notice of a new comment but doing it by the stash writer way I'm the only one getting the messages on my personal box. Would be great id no matter how the journal is posted on the group all the admins could get the comments on their group's message boxes.

Also another issue I've now is that when I post a journal on my group I also get the journal posted on my personal journal list so my own watchers gets the group's journal, is there a way to submit the journal as exclusive to group and don't get it on your personal account?

A couple issues with the mobile site. These may not be the same on every device, though. These require me to disabled it and switch to desktop view.
1. Editing deviations doesn't work properly. Clicking to edit does not direct me to the editing page.
2. Can't access settings. There's no link to them, as far as I can tell.
3. Can't edit profile page. None of the editing buttons (the pencil icons) appear. The "Edit Page" option is also absent.

Are there any plans for some kind of word count on the st.ash writer?
i've found myself writing and i'd like to have one so i don't have to copy/paste to Word, and it seems like something that'd be pretty straightforward to include.

I think that there should be an option to not show all of the newest deviations, but to show ones that least viewed because people upload deviations really fast, so it can't be newest if there are a lot of downloads, but it can't be most popular either. It would be nice if there was a least viewed option. It was just a thought.
