In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

  • The Twitter widget for Profile Pages was not visually displaying correctly on wider screens. Fixed by justgalym
  • When browsing content in Sta.sh, the "Previous" and "Next" buttons would not work after editing a file's description. Fixed by elhsmart
  • For deviants with wider browsers, the search bar on the Chat portal would appear numerous times. Fixed by shendykurnia
  • The "Forgot password?" page was not usable on mobile devices. Fixed by ultramouse
  • The "Change Username" modal would not show properly after an error message was displayed. Fixed by ultramouse
  • Files in Sta.sh would have "Click to Add Description" included in their description, even after description text was added. Fixed by elhsmart
  • From time to time, an unnecessary horizontal scrollbar would appear on the mobile website. Fixed by shendykurnia
  • It was possible to enable downloads when submitting Motion Books, even though that would only trigger the thumbnail being downloaded. Fixed by DEVlANT

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were pleased about the launch of the Motion Book Tool.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, some deviants mentioned using Scraps as a place to keep older work as an archive of sorts, while others mentioned using it for works-in-progress, doodles, or things they want to include in a Journal without including it in their main Gallery.
  • While most deviants mentioned never moving things from Scraps into their main Gallery, a few deviants mentioned that when using it to host works-in-progress, they'll update the main file of that deviation with the completed work, and then move it to their Gallery from there.

Yes I have. It's usually an overly busy schedule that causes it, and once that dissipates I'm back online.

I've taken several hiatuses from dA, Facebook, Tumblr...Especially Tumblr. Mainly because sometimes the entire Internet is just too hostile for me to be on it and I just want to take a few days to cool off...And sometimes it's because I'm out camping with no Internet access at all. :bucktooth:

You guys should add a stamps widget for people to use. It would be a lot easier and faster than having to copy-paste thumb codes one by one.

The reason why I'm taking a hiatus from DeviantArt is because I don't even have a convenient scanner.

The hiatus question... Yeah, I'll be going on hiatus from the internet since I use my neighbor's wifi and they're leaving for vacation so I'll have no internet but I'm sure he's gonna return soon to collect my bills lol. xD

Internet without a month.... God... my anxiety. ;-;

I have tried to take a hiatus, but most of the time I end up just realizing how... 'addicted' I am to this site and a couple of others. :B If I take a hiatus for real, it's mostly because of some real life situation — health issues, study load, visiting somewhere with poor connection, or where I can't take my laptop with me, as typing replies on the phone is a cactus in the ass. :B And reasons to take a hiatus from this site... Drama-llamas; I don't like conflict, especially if it's between people I consider my friends and I wish not to take a side so as not to insult anyone (yet not siding seems to be insulting as well... go figure). Artblock; seeing others' productivity as well as talent sometimes makes me feel inferior and I just need to be away for a bit. :paranoid:

Recently, my hiatus was because of an illness. I'm still not completely recovered from it, and it'll be quite awhile before I am, most likely. But...That's the reason why. And of course, the fact that sometimes I get artists block, just like everyone else does on here, I'm going to assume. XD
I'd LOVE a button for self suspension, where you make your account unable to be logged into without contacting an admin or something complex like that. It'd be HELPFULL AS HELL for school and work and such.

I take very small Hiatuses. They are more like breaks.
Most times I do so is for some random Medical nonsense that
happened to happen where I can't use my drawing arm anymore.

Although, I took a REALLY long Hiatus from DA because I found that
it was an incredibly difficult place to get commissions. (And still is)
But I figured that I'll post up art here anyways because I can.

School: what else can I say? I've also got work on Fanfiction to worry about, so hiatuses from Deviantart do well in keeping some of the pressure off my back for the moment.

Personally, since I have a very cruddy attention span, tryin' to keep up with the things I said I'd do just sometimes gets very.. Getting Comfy Uncomfortable.

A haitus can keep me sane if I've got a lot of things to do. It's nice to step back and think about things outside of the internet. Though what usually brings me back is the pressures of school work. Heh.

"Thinking Games" (like Lumosity) may help with your "cruddy" attention span. A 13 year old girl once told me about her magical transformation after using the site. She claimed "thinking games" made her smarter than those who played "regular games". She swore by it; and her profile page full of spelling errors proved it!

I've occasionally taken brief hiatuses from DA due to being overwhelmed by the tasks I had set up for myself here. The items on my to-do lists would pile up, and I would need to take a break to relax a bit before getting back to work.

Real life also drops in every once in a while. School is usually the main cause of me having to stop myself from going online.

I have had several hiatuses from the internet. Mainly for vacation reasons, and sometimes because it just feels nice to get away from the computer or cell phone. I tend to have random hiatuses from DA because of classwork.
But just taking a break is nice. Sometimes having to browse the internet feels like a chore xD

I've taken many hiatuses from the internet, usually on the holidays for about a week. It gives me time to relax and be with family.

Also, I'm on hiatus from dA right now (sorta) as I'm too busy during school to be active on here.

I never take any actual hiatuses but sometimes I take small breaks(usually a few days long, for dA, but for other websites it can be up to several months). Actually, now that I think of it, I'm currently on a hiatus from an Oekaki website I used to visit frequently. It's been several months since I've visited and more than a year since actually being active, because I don't have internet access at home and I've been having trouble updating my Java.

I don't think I could ever take a long hiatus from the internet unless I'm on vacation or sum such, but I always take some frequently on websites, like here on DA. It's usually due to personal issues or lack of content/inspiration. But even when I'm on one, I still tend to check various things out and see what others are up to. I'm kinda on one now for everything, and I'm not sure what could bring me back, if anything. Ah, well...

Yeah, might be a bug, might be a part of an update I didn't bother checking out recently but the choice for typing in a group name to make a submission from a deviation page is no longer under the "Add to a Group" menu.

Where did that option go because I loved it for submissions to groups I don't use as often as the ones shown currently.

And I have several expired submission from group members of Groups I'm a founder/co-founder of that require me to use the "Type a group name" search bar within the "Add to a Group" menu.

I do so frequently for lengths of time. i happen to be much better at physical art and writing, then at digital art. i also do not have any digital programs other than microsoft paint and inkscape.

as such, i take liberal time away from the internet to do real life things. Plus, i like to just watch tv sometimes. it is simple.

I guess you could say I'm on hiatus from dA right now. I've already described why on the previous journal—no CC0 licence option, which means I can't really label a bunch of things for my libre project correctly, and the fact it's way easier and quicker to upload the images to archive.org (which does have a CC0 labelling option) or tumblr and I get more HTML/CSS freedom to describe them on my blog. And after uploading them elsewhere and describing them on my blog, my dA is really kind of redundant.

Currently I'm only using my dA for fan art and random dream doodles, if that.

I take hiatuses frequently, not from the entire internet but from certain parts. I've taken a couple hiatuses from dA in the past year or so, and several from Tumblr. Usually my hiatuses are just so I can take a break and separate myself from the site and any drama that may be going on, especially on Tumblr. And with sites like deviantART and AO3 it's just a good way to gather my thoughts and recharge my creative batteries.

I took a hiatus from the entire internet once because I was cyber bullied by a "friend" who knew me in real life. She was spreading rumors about me and giving my personal info out to everyone on the websites we were on together. It wasn't a complete hiatus because I would still keep track of her page and the pages of some of my other friends. But I'd never log in and I would never say anything. Six months later, she disappeared from the face of the internet and I decided to get a dA account, but with a completely different alias.

I am really, really sorry that happened to you. I hate when "friends" do stuff like that. I had someone on here do something like that to me too they started spreading rumors at school and then telling people on here about me. It is really frustrating, because on the internet most people don't know you and you can't just call someone a liar. I kept my old account and have been working to get my reputation on here back. To be honest, I never did anything to that person. They just snapped one day and wouldn't listen to reason, so I just ignored them.
Are you still friends with some of those people? I hope everything has gotten better for you since then. That was terrible of them.

Oh my, that's horrible >~< I'm so sorry that happened to you, as well, sweetheart. I actually am still friends with two of the people from when that happened to me (In fact, they were why I decided to get a dA account, so that I could still talk to them ) Because they defended me when the rumors were being spread about me. But yes, things have been a lot better since then, and I'm very glad of it. I have much better friends now and I'm much happier ^^

Is there a way to omit key words when doing a search?
Reply
:iconfantasylost:
FantasyLost Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2014   Digital Artist
For complete information on doing DA searches: FAQ #577: How do I use the Search?

Here's the section specific to omitting keywords:

Excluding Search Terms:
cat -fish
Returns results that have "cat" but not "fish".

cat -fish -dog
Returns results that have "cat" but do not have "fish" and do not have "dog" either.

Hope the above answers your question.

I don't usually take hiatuses from the internet. At most, I'm not on for a day or two, usually because 1.) I'm traveling somewhere (rare), 2.) the power went out in my house or dorm, or 3.) I'm doing something related to my university organization. How long I stay on per day depends on the time of year (summer/winter vacation versus midterms or finals week) and how busy I am that particular day.
