In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Update Regarding the New Deviation Page

We've been monitoring performance and feedback since launch of the new deviation page to A/B testing, and we wanted to provide an update in regards to how the new deviation page has been performing, as well as following-up on community feedback and response.

Some valid concerns were raised by the community during this testing period. Moving forward for deviants who are in the new deviation page test group, we'll be keeping the aspects of the test that were successful (such as More From This Artist, More from deviantART, and the associated cleaner sidebar styling), while removing the aspects that need further refinement. These sections have been replaced with the familiar layout of the previous deviation page.

Deviant and Art Mentions (Beta Testers)

A new feature has been launched that's designed to make interacting with others even easier than before! Deviant & Art Mentions are a highly requested feature that send notifications to your Message Center when someone mentions you or your work in a public location on site.

Targeted Dropping and Infinite Scroll in Sta.sh

When you upload a file to your Sta.sh by dragging and dropping it, you can now easily put your file in a specific place in your Sta.sh! This combines the process of uploading and organizing, making it easier than before to organize and maintain your projects, even when adding new files.

In addition, infinite scrolling has been added to your Sta.sh. When browsing your Sta.sh or inside of stacks, you can now scroll and view all of your files on one page, rather than relying on pagination to find your files.

API Console for Developers

A Sta.sh API Console has been released, allowing developers to test live responses to our OAuth APIs.

Help Desk Closure, August 30 and September 2

In honor of Labor Day in the US, the Help Desk will be closed on Friday August 30th and Monday September 2nd. We'll be back to our normal business hours on Tuesday, September 3rd. Please keep in mind that due to this extended weekend, there will be response delays while we catch up from the weekend's tickets upon reopening.

  • If you opened an arrow menu when editing your Profile page, the menu sometimes stayed open after clicking elsewhere. Fixed by DEVlANT

  • If a person used their browser's settings to be zoomed out on a page, some controls would not display properly. Fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh / Submit

  • For Beta Testers, when dropping a file onto a stack and then cancelling the upload immediately after, the thumbnail would disappear and then reappear. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • If an icon was included in a comment, the icon would float to the front of the comment. Fixed by inazar
  • On smaller screens, buttons on the Sta.sh Writer toolbar could be cut off in the Forums, most frequently the link icon. Fixed by inazar
  • Some scrolling issues could occur when clicking Add Media or Hide Media. Fixed by inazar
  • When viewing a Sta.sh stack's contents in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar, the content could occasionally be pushed over to the right, where it couldn't really be seen. Fixed by inazar
  • In Sta.sh, clicking the "Previous" and "Next" navigation arrows would insert deviations into the comment box instead of navigating. Fixed by inazar
  • For people viewing the new deviation page, Journals flagged as mature content would be visible even before clicking to view. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Feedback regarding the release of sales on the Earnings page was positive.
  • Deviants were positive about targeted dropping in Sta.sh, though a few deviants mentioned concern regarding infinite scroll.
  • Responses to the Discuss topic varied, though several deviants mentioned sending Notes to multiple deviants at once when organizing contests or doing art features.
  • Some deviants would like to have stacks inside of stacks, in their Sta.sh. Suggested by ZuTheSkunk

The only thing I hate about this is the fact that the only Mentions I ever receive are from people who use this  in huge-ass emoticon walls. Sadly, no one ever bothers to check the my deviation or my gallery in spite of the fact that the emoticon leads there. So I get a bunch of messages in my Message Center and I get all hopeful and stuff and then BAM, no one actually commented or faved or anything, just like 4 or 5 emoticon walls. It's kind of annoying.

I do like the new mentioning thing, but what I don't like is how the name/about/etc tabs at the top of the page are black. Black doesn't even look that great in comparison with the greenish color. Is there going to be a way to change the color of those tabs in the future?

Excuse me, but I don't believe that journals should be counted as deviations in the statistics. Could you please go back to just counting the gallery as deviations?

I have a suggestion for commissions.
A "Pending" period, in which the artist accepts the commission, the points are deducted, but HELD until the artist uploads a piece of art to finalize the transaction, at which time the points/payment is then delivered to their account. The art is attached to that transaction, notifying the buyer of its completion. The buyer would also have the option, at that time, to offer feedback on the details of the commission. ("Would you commission this person again?" "How did the purchase meet your expectations?" "General Comments: " Etc.)
A Purchased commissions widget: Displays the commissions you have purchased, through the DA commissions features.

(I apologize if I am posting this to the wrong place)

EXCUSE ME, SIR/MA'AM!

But why are tumblr links leading outside of dA to tumblr.com considered SPAM?

I was trying to link a friend of mine to one of her posts on tumblr. Her url is blackstormbsvp .tumblr. com {remove spaces} and if you add /archive and go to the first post of hers for this month, you'll see the post I was trying to link her to to ask her about something she used in it.

Why are tumblr links considered spam now, huh?

Can you explain that at all or is it another broken system thing that has happened with the new updates?

Hi there! It appears to be specific to that Tumblr account, as you can still link to Tumblr accounts without it encountering the spam filter. (As an example, this link goes to deviantART's Tumblr account.) You can file a bug report at the Help Desk about it, I'm not sure what the reasoning would be for that particular account to be filtered out.

Can we stop with that "1 Food That Kills" advert?  The ads on an art-focused site should at least be semi-tasteful.

Disregard my last comment-

For the first time, it was a bug, rather than a site update, that has caused me inconvenience and frustration.

I am not sure if this is a new feature or if I am having problems, but I highly dislike not having thumbnails in my deviantWATCH messages.

It is irritating to not have a preview to see if something is worth viewing, and just makes the page look sloppy. Is this a new setting option of whether we would like to have them or not?

A lot of these 'updates' seem more like 'ways to irritate people.'

I just noticed that StashWriter now fires up everytime I try to edit a description for something in Stash. What's up with that and how can I turn it off? It's not even possible to add a user avatar by writing :icon(username): anymore.

Another "update", I presume?

Hi there! Sta.sh Writer occurring on the edit page was a bug, should be okay now. As far as icons go, it seems to be working properly for me: :iconbot-chan: Can you give it another try and see if it's working for you?

Thanks for the quick reply. However, Sta.sh Writer is still appearing and I still can't use icons (note that I'm still talking about Sta.sh here, they work fine in the normal comments).

I know I'm unlikely to get an answer back but I have a question for you DA. The "related" art that is now present on the side of my deviations. Not only is is often completely UN-related. But none of it points back to my own gallery. For popular artists though, the related works DO point largely back to their gallery. I find this really quite unfair. If someone has actually come to look at something from my gallery why would you point them directly out again? Not really in the community spirit is it? I know you probably think that my work is crappy and unprofessional but you market this site for artists of all levels. If people don't want to look at my work, they'll find their way out without your help. I'd appreciate a reply on why you've seen fit to focus the attention even further on the already popular artists but I doubt very much you'll bother replying to me.

Again I would like to call attention to the sites navigation issues- I am now aware that i am not the only one with this problem.
Whenever the back button is pressed the viewer is more often than not taken back two pages instead of one. It makes navigating the site very frustrating. I would like to see it fixed.

When are they going to fix the bug that makes the deviation count go up? Or are journals now counted as deviations?

I'd honestly just like a more convenient journal system for free users. I'm not even asking for top the of line stuff here -- just give me at least half the editing options of Wordpress and you'll see me post a helluvalot more content on the site.

I find the anything widget to be the most useful, since I can customize it to my desire (`CypherVisor's customizing codes are AWESOME!), but I'd have to say that the Deviant ID widget and the Featured Deviation widget are also quite important to me. :)

I think I've said it before, but I'd still love an option to sort favorites by artist so it's easier to track down someone you're not watching.

Oh, and I also think it could help to be able to make folders within folders in favorites.  So like deviations, we could better organize favorites and find specific ones more easily, instead of amassing them in several folders, or creating an endless list of folders on the sidebar.  Those are my suggestions, at least.  =)

The widget I use or tweak the most is (obviously) the deviantID widget. I also enjoy using the Webcam.
Question: can the Featured Deviation widget (the one with a heart next to the deviation icon) be used more than once by everyone? I've seen other people do this and I was wondering if this was a Premium Members feature only or if I'm just missing a button somewhere...

Also, I remember dA announcing they were going to make Keywords appear publicly. Whenever this happens, will the list of tags appear under the artist comments or under the Details sidebar? And if there are several tags on a deviation, will there be a cutoff point on the list, so instead of a giant wall of text there will be a "(see more)" button? If you're still considering all of this then I'd like to add the former questions as suggestions to consider.
Thanks for the update! :hello:

yeah, valid concerns like the damm submit button that 90% of deviants don't like, why is it still there?

Because 90% of those who leave comments in journal aren't 90% of the entire community.

I'd much rather invoke practical reasons, as opposed to "hater" numbers.

it destroy the balance of the gallery and it's not pretty nor professional, I think everyone can see that...
they should allow people that want it to make it appear, but forcing that? not fair at all

I understand that it looks superfluous and isn't part of what someone usually does when they visit their own gallery, but dramatizing it with assertions like "it destroys the balance" is nothing short of an overreaction.

Also, 98% of all invoked statistics are made up (pun intended) and never backed up with evidence.

actually it does, cuz if you want the gallery to look great, you need to place the artworks in a special order due to the uneven spacing between deviation they introduced last year! what a great idea...indeed each deviation is pushed to the right if they have more characters in their titles than some others OR of they figure in too many sub-galleries
and that button addition screw it all up, so you need to do all over again

(I just use the grid view setting when viewing art on dA, so I'll admit that I personally missed those shortcomings both in my gallery and those of other users)
Suffice it to say, though, what you seem to be rising now are issues with the wall view setting, rather than something wrong with the Submit button.
