What's New

As with the previous Site Update, this week's Site Update is a little different than usual in that we don't have any publicly visible changes due to our holiday closure. However, stay tuned because we'll be back in full force next week! In the meanwhile, check out...

You're Not Alone

Throughout the holiday season and looking forward to the New Year, it can be easy to feel an ineffable disconnect for any multitude of reasons. But if the thriving and ever-growing community of deviantART can give you one gift now and in the year to come, it's the knowledge that you are not alone. Let art and community into your soul for an inspirational dose of healing whenever you may need it.

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on the last Site Update! There were a variety of methods people chose to go about their regular Group maintenance. Generally, deviants who commented check their Groups every day, and the Groups they help run require voting for deviations to be accepted.

Commonly mentioned concerns with the Group management process included having to jump back and forth between Groups in the Message Center to find Correspondence messages, as well as not being able to easily move or remove deviations from a Group. tobysq also mentioned wanting larger thumbnails for Correspondence messages.

Discuss!

Art Resolutions for the New Year

Recently, we asked on Twitter if deviants' New Year's resolutions involved art. The responses we received were wonderful and varied, and as such we wanted to pose the question here, as well! Do any of your New Year's resolutions involve art, and if so, what are they?

For Journals submitted with Sta.sh Writer, both the "Edit" and "Edit with Sta.sh Writer" buttons linked to the Sta.sh Writer editor, preventing editing of a Journal's description, details, and Mature Content settings. Fixed by     szlosek

I have this problem still, so it is not fixed. Thanks!

One suggestion: Can you make possible to watch just some of Gallery folders while watching Group (or even deviant)?

I would love if we could put more folders into a folder in our favorites.
Like you have a folder for let's say "Superheros", but you want to organize
it a bit more. So you have the option to put another folder specifically for
let's say "DC Comics", one for "Marvel", one for "Original Characters", etc.
Would be nice to be able to separate and organize better, especially for
people who have a lot of original characters and don't want to make
a general folder for each and every one of them.

Most of my New Years resolutions involve art. Mainly I plan on becoming more skilled and bringing myself to a higher level in the three main areas my business focuses on: Drawing/Painting, Photography and Graphic Design. I started my new years by planning ten days straight of online courses to further my knowledge in those areas. I'm also working to improve my marketing abilities.

I look forward to seeing many of the other artists on here improve this year as well!

I have two ideas I've been thinking about for a while:
1. How about adding tags to people I watch? Personally I'm following somewhere around 200 people and it's impossible to associate all their nicknames with their art. If I was able to tag these artists with tags like "digital painting", "stock photos", "nice colouring skills" or even "style I want in the future" it would be much easier to find the person I'm looking for on the list.
2. The second idea is in my opinion a bit harder to implement. Some artists create various things - photos, drawing, sculpture etc. and sometimes I like their photos but dislike drawings or the other way round. It would be nice to watch only things I like from their gallery. It could be judged from the category (Photography/People and Portraits, for instance) or the folders that some artist use.

About first point - you could use the Deviant Lists option on your "Manage Friends" page. It allows you to classify the people you're watching by arranging them to the groups.

I use them but it's still not enough, as I sometimes want to add one person to multiple lists. This is what I would rather use tags than lists.

Actually second thing you are talking about is kinda possible with DA's "channels" option. When you enter users gallery you can switch to "All" then click category you like, scroll down to the end/bottom of page and click blue button "+ channels" ythen click "OK" and go to your www.deviantart.com/channels/ page
You will still get  all art from this artist in your devwatch messages, but still, chanels are very useful. You can even add to channels specific folders of artists or Groups. Sadly for non-premium users it is only possible to add 4 channels, which is ridiculus.

Wow, I didn't know about channels at all, thank you. But still, as you said 4 is a very low number, so it would be nice to be able to specify what you want to watch after clicking the +watch button or something like this.

Hey, I have a suggestion:
I don't know if you guys got this one yet but is it possible to make subfolders for the scraps category? I have a lot of practice work I post up there and it would be helpful to have a way to organize them without having to put them with my main stuff.

Thanks!

I am going to comment to bump up ~Amargaard 's idea's.

#1 Comment and Threads limits.
Please DeviantART this one needs something done with it. A lot of artists are getting their artwork spammed with other artists replying to comments a dozen times. I personally don't mind this if it were just a few comments/replies but if it goes on for too long it makes your artwork's comments look messy and also messes with the statistics on the side. The option to limit replies is something you should consider.

#3 See Friendship.
This idea is brilliant! Adds to DeviantART's social side, it isn't really going to get in the way of anything and reading over old conversations with your mates will brighten your day. :DD

These are not my suggestions, they are ~Amargaard's. I simply loved these suggestions and wanted them too be seen by the DA staff.

Thanks a bunch for supporting and sharing! Means a lot that I'm not the only one with these thoughts:)

Although, what you wrote in #1 differs a lot from what I actually meant in my original post. My suggestion is not about limiting comments or threads in any way, it is about connecting them, and thus also the people who make them :b
Sort of like how YouTube works, where the latest commented thread is moved to the top of all the others, so that eventually new random users will read the popular threads, and participate in the discussion themselves - thus creating an exciting conversation between several users, instead of just two people, like deviantART sadly is limited to most of the time :)

No worries. c:

Oh, i'm so sorry for the misunderstanding. Thank you for clearing that up.
What you have just explained would be amazing for journals but for artworks it would be a huge pain, mainly for the reason i gave trying to "approve" of your misunderstood suggestion. But i agree with your suggestion for journals, i think it is a lovely idea. <33

Again, sorry for the misunderstanding. I can be a little slack sometimes.

Actually I would want it for the artwork as well, but perhaps each user should be able to enable/disable this feature to be used on what they publish themselves, or to only have it on journals for instance, if that's what they want :)

And yeah, what you suggested would be pretty nice as well! Especially mixed with this, so that people will not get overflown with comments if they do not wish to :b

How about you put expiration dates on messages? I follow a lot of people and groups, and sometimes I'm not on for a month or longer, and the messages keep pileing up. We can have a little option box in our messages, and we can type in a date. For example, say we don't want to have messages in our inboxes for more than 3-5 months. We can type it in 3 months, and any messages that are in our inboxes for more than 3 months are deleted instantly.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't want an expiration date, but there actually is already one. If your messages remain in your inbox for more than a year, or you receive more than 10,000 or something, they're automatically deleted. But I hate losing messages, so I always file the ones I want to keep as soon as I can, so as to preserve them.

I agree on this one as well - I always stack up loads of loads of WATCH messages each time I log out and back in, and sometimes it would feel better to just chill and not have to look through all of them :)

How about putting search options, such as "newest to oldest" or search by number of views? That way, newer artists can get feedback on their skills and techniques as well as a little extra motivation to keep doing what they love. I see too many newcomers who feel neglected. Too many, I tell you! Too many! *falls to knees dramatically*

As I know, these options already exist on the left from the search results (the "newest" is for the newest and the number of views is "popular" ones). Or you meant something else?

I type the keywords in, and click "newest", but it takes me to a page of deviations having nothing to do with the keywords. Same happens when I search the keywords, and click "newest" after the results come up.  Is there just an error, or is it supposed to do that? (I meant like a "newest" option that actually sorted the results and not the whole website.)

The first has a simple explanation I think: you didn't send the search request by pressing the button (directly clicking or via keyboard), so it sorts the existing stuff. As for the second - does it write the amount of works which were found below the search bar?

I search the keywords, a couple ten thousand or so results come up, I click on "newest", and it takes me to a different page of deviations and there's no number of results below the search bar. The search bar has no keywords in it either when this happens. One way or the other, I can't sort through the search results, even when the search request goes through.
