What's New

DeviantART no longer supports Internet Explorer 8

The Internet is an ever-changing place, and the new capabilities made available in major browser releases allow developers (at deviantART and elsewhere online) to build faster, more stable and secure technology.

When you use an outdated browser to visit deviantART — or any other site — the site doesn't always work as intended. We stop accepting bug reports for those browsers over time, as it's time consuming for our developers and hinders the advancement of the site as a whole.

For some time now, Internet Explorer 8 has made up a very small portion of traffic, yet contributed disproportionately to bug reports. With this in mind, we are henceforth dropping support for it.

We strongly encourage that you always use the latest version of your favorite browser, to ensure that you can see all the Web has to offer.

Change Log

  • The Llama Trade page was temporarily closed to address some abuse concerns. The page has since been reinstated. Fixed by DEVlANT and ArtBIT
  • The "Next Page" button for deviation comments would not work for some deviations if reached using the "Previous" and "Next" buttons when browsing deviations. Fixed by ultramouse
  • When browsing deviations using the "Previous" and "Next" buttons, the "Remove From Messages" button would disappear if the browser's back button was used. Fixed by duraseb
  • If a URL was typed as www.username.deviantart.com, it would not redirect to username.deviantart.com. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • It was not possible to include a title on comments on cake badges for a short period. Fixed by ultramouse
  • For Chrome users, when trying to select several deviations in one's Gallery or Favourites, selecting by using ctrl+click (command+click for Mac users) Selecting multiple deviation with 'ctrl' in Chrome in users gallery or faves no longer worked. Fixed by duraseb
  • For published deviations that were previously located in Sta.sh, trying to view the comments left in Sta.sh did not work properly. Fixed by ultramouse
  • For a very short period, the URL that one would be forwarded to after submitting a deviation would lead to an error page, even though the deviation was submitted properly. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • The "Forgot password?" link did not work in login modals in Chrome. Fixed by ultramouse

Sta.sh Writer
  • Various improvements were made to the way Sta.sh Writer handles content that is pasted into a document. Changed by Alisey
  • Stack descriptions would not load when navigating between stacks in Sta.sh unless the page was refreshed. Fixed by inazar
  • There were various bugs with line breaks inside of heading and paragraph tags. Fixed by Alisey
  • When leaving comments on deviations from the mobile website, the "Preview" and "Submit" buttons would not disappear after focus was moved away from the comment box. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback that was left:
  • Some deviants commented regarding an issue where messages were not being delivered to their Message Centers promptly. While it does help us when comments are left on the Site Update, we do encourage that you always check the Status Forum to see if an issue you're encountering is a known issue. If it is not, you should file a bug report at the Help Desk.
  • We received a variety of responses to the Discuss topic. Many of the community events mentioned were run through Groups, although some official Contests and projects were also included in some deviants' replies. A commonly mentioned factor regarding whether or not a deviant would join an event was if it had a message of awareness.

Discuss!

Proly obvious to some but is this for ALL future versions of Internet Explorer as well or just the 8th version!?

All versions of IE are separete and independent products. So if we speak about IE8, we mean the IE8 only - not other versions.

I wrote a journal about this suggestion to my watchers, and some replied saying their opinions on it.

My suggestion was to be able to share deviations on deviantart not through only notes. Like, where the share option is, put a little dA symbol for sharing here. When a deviant shares a deviation, it would be sent to their watcher's inboxes.

I think it would need to be limited, to maybe about 5 shares a day. Wouldn't want to be spamming your watchers. But it would be an awesome way to let others notice different artists, and help artists to get more feedback, etc... It would also be helpful for people with alternate accounts, such as ask accounts or something.

What do you think about that?

I guess it should probably be okay what with Chrome and such being free to download, although a lot of people depend on IE at work and stuff :)

Work computer solution: portableapps.com/apps/internet… <- is chrome without installing anything (if you work computer is locked down and doesn't allow installation; other wise normal chrome works).

People who don't have their head lodged in their rectum due to their inability to get over IE7.

In fact, IE 11 is so nice now, the only reason I even keep Chrome installed on my PC is for it's blob constructor capabilities, for ONE website.  A single update could make Chrome obsolete.

Firefox is still a pretty useful tool to have on any computer, so it's not in danger of being deleted any time soon.

It's easy for you people to tell the others to get the latest version of a browser but let face the fact that it's not easy to get the latest version because these browser are not for free, and with the economy getting shit every time... Well you know.

The community-developed (open-source) browsers are free as in "freedom of speech", as well as in the sense of "free beer". Their developers make the best efforts in the industry to adhere to Internet standards, so web developers love them. The open development process helps to find and fix bugs and security issues quickly, and you can be much more confident that there are no hidden bits of spyware or other nasties hidden in there (because *nothing* is hidden - anyone can see the works if they want to!)

Google chrome and firefox are both free and works well.

Google chrome is easy to use and fast, however I would recommend firefox if you have concerns about security.

It is more like some of us cannot afford to always get new gadgets with the latest OS and thus, the latest browser that supports them.  My computer's eight years old and I had to plan long and hard before getting a laptop recently.  I haven't used IE on my computer in a long time...Chrome and Firefox will still let me in easily on here...but maybe others aren't so lucky.

All major browsers are free to download, actually! Microsoft, Apple, Google, Mozilla, and Opera all provide their software free of charge, you can find them here: Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera :)

Inspiration? Mostly music. Or playing games too since I sometimes draw game fanarts. deviantART also helps but I rarely intentionally search for it, I rather just stumble upon it in Groups or shared by people.

Please, consider changing the background color for the community.

The not-neutral, gaudy, ugly green is NOT optimal for viewing variously colored images. It skews the viewers' perception. Some shade of gray or white is best: art stands out best against a neutral background, and the arts' own colors are true against a neutral background.

I understand that the green is part of your "brand." That's fine. Keep in the header menu and footer notes.

A better idea would be to have an option somewhere to change the site background.

I would like that. It would be nice if each profile had the option to simply change the background color. It would add that extra bit of personalization to every profile.

UserStyles don't feature any themes with a white background.

Also, random visitors aren't going to use UserStyles when browsing my profile.

Changing the community entirely is the best solution.

People will view the internet the way they want to. If dA changes it so users can customize the bg, then you'll have no idea what bg it will be on for anyone. If one persons uses black and the other white, I could see them arguing over if a picture has enough contrast. And if dA restricts it to the colors you want, someone will complain that they can't use they colors they want.

Also, if it matters to you that much, css is pretty easy to learn for basic stuff like that. If you need some help with it, my job is writing css so I'm pretty familiar with it.

"People will view the internet the way they want to."

No, people will view the internet the way the websites owners wants them to view the internet. You can't view websites the way YOU want to view them, unless you install some specific skin (if you are knowledgable enough). That also requires special browsers like Firefox or Chrome. Internet Explorer still holds a massive chunk of the market.

"If one persons uses black and the other white, I could see them arguing over if a picture has enough contrast."

I'd prefer consistency. I don't want DA to turn into MySpace.

"Also, if it matters to you that much, css is pretty easy to learn for basic stuff like that."

Cascading style sheets will only allow me to change my profile's individual boxes, not the view of the entire community. In addition, that will make it look tacky, because the background will still be not-neutral, nasty green.

A redesign would have to be universal.

I use a PC and now only use Chrome, I have been using Firefox since it first came out for the PC, however that seems to have gone more and more glitchy especially when trying to use the likes of YouTube, so made the switch to Chrome and so far haven't regretted it...
