In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Introducing Improved Comments

With over 1.5 million comments posted per day, deviantART's commenting system provides the backbone for fostering relationships across the globe. To highlight this vital aspect of community interaction and provide more control around conversations, we’re proud to introduce the ability to Feature, edit, and hide comments.

Change Log

  • For large comment threads, the last page of comments would not have its own page number in the navigation. Fixed by yumeruby
  • Some Groups would not receive a Super Group symbol immediately after upgrading. Fixed by ultramouse
  • The Critiqueable page was not displaying the most recent Critiqueable deviations. Fixed by elhsmart
  • Deviations in the Romance subcategory of the Fan Fiction gallery would not appear when searched for by title within that category. Fixed by drigh
  • Some categories that should allow archive files were not. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When viewing a custom folder in one's Notes, the page numbers would not work if a large number of notes were added to that folder and then removed shortly after. Fixed by ultramouse

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, some deviants said that their relationships with other deviants were generally friendships, although some other deviants mentioned it being business relationships, and a few deviants mentioned romantic relationships as well!
  • In most cases, deviants met one another through shared interests or because they create using the same medium as one another. Some deviants mentioned meeting one another through a Group, and Lyricanna mentioned FelesTacita meeting them through the Random Deviant button.
  • theSilverJackaL and Nortya suggested a feature that you could use to find other deviants based on shared interests, creation methods, and other things.

Discuss!

I see people featuring their own comments on other users pages but it doesn't work for me. I can only feature comments I make on my own page :(

Sure I'll see if I can find them again. The most recent one is on the 14 Seniors Announcement. I have no idea what that guy is rambling on about, but it's a reply to me and it's featured. I saw many more so I'll send the links when I find them.

I just had a question about the comment stacks. I know on a few of my pieces of art and friends art that we sometimes go on for multiple pages. Today however, I am not seeing the button where you can go to the last comment in a stack in the comments section in order to see the rest of the pages. What is going on? :(

But you can also hide your comments now, so if you said something that you were too lazy to edit, you can just hide it.

Eh, I suppose. I see this as a bad con. Being able to hide your comment, and editing.
I guess its good for mistakes, but then people can completely change what they said.
Like if you were trying to get someone removed for being underage. Say they posted a comment saying they were 8. And you said you would report them
then they could just go back and change everything.

The comments change seems very well thought-out that you can see the previous revisions of the comment. Thanks for being careful with this one.

A suggestion: It would be nice if we could save screen captures with the Prt Scr key into Sta.sh somehow.

I have a suggestion. I write fanfictions, so I put all the chapters of a fanfiction in one folder. I sort them from old to new so people visiting that folder can easily find chapter 1. However, when I upload a new chapter to that folder, it gets first place. I have to redo the sort old to new every time I upload a new chapter to that folder, which is rather inconvenient.
My suggestion is to make it automatically go to the end of the folder if the sorting is on old to new, when you you upload a new deviation to that folder.

Pointing stuff out?
Say someone left a comment about how..awesome your work is. Wouldnt you like to show off that comment because it means so much to you?
You'd just use the feature button and your good.

If I may bring this up: Lemons. I have read the FAQ, don't get me wrong, but there's a problem. I have a feeling some people are having what my mom would call two bites of the same Apple when it comes to these stories.
I have friends who write Lemons, (names won't be revealed) one who has her's taken down, the other who has her's still up. I'm sorry, but that doesn't seem fair to the first friend.
If someone could explain why the first one has their lemons removed, I'd be really thankful!

Tip for giving good feedback is to make it reasonable - hold the "idea" of your comment always close, don't stray too far - otherwise it'll be a misery to read. I do not mean we should take examples when giving feedback, but we should make it wisely. :) (ofc language barriers can make it difficult if English isn't one of one's strong points)

A tip for leaving comments? I would say, of course in addition to elaborating on your thoughts instead of just pounding out one word, please read the artist's description first to see if whatever question or suggestion you might have has already been addressed. I haven't had any issue with trolls or mean-spirited comments in my years here, so keep that up, too. :) I look forward to featuring any standout comments; looks like a good improvement!

it would be nice if we can see what the original comment is before it was editted so if someone trolles it can still be traced

You can. If you click on the time stamp of the comment, it will bring up the comment by itself and to the right there will be a list of edits if the comment has indeed been edited. From there you can click on the edit in the list, and it will bring up the comment prior to any additional edits. Here's an example: comments.deviantart.com/1/4601…

Artists want to communicate through their art, things that are otherwise inexpressible. A comment telling the artist that they have successfully conveyed something to you, and what that was like, is more encouraging than a thousand commendations.

One tip on how to leave a good comment? I'd say taking the time to leave a comment is a good first step, but to make it better is to make it more thought-out, and constructive. Say, instead of just saying 'Awesome!' for a picture, maybe say what you like most about it and why, and if any improvements could be made in your honest opinion. I myself always like to see constructive feedback. =)

At first, I didn't like the idea because people could use this tool to say and do slanderous comments and actions to another user, and think they can get away with it by hiding their own comment or editing it.

Thank goodness you can see what the original comment was, but what still bugs me would be the fact that the commenter will now have the power to hide their own comment...Oh wait...
I then remembered you can still use the URL to link the staff the comment in a report and view the message in your inbox, even when hidden.
Okay well problem solved I guess?

I know many people want a "delete comments" feature, but I honestly have to disagree. Reason being would be it defeating the purpose of the "edit" and the n "hiding your own comment" feature. Not only that, I think it would conflict with conveying evidence needed of something that is reportable, as you wouldn't be able to show it because the comment was deleted.

Edit: Oh wait, you can't get hold of the URL if you accidentally delete the troll's comment from your inbox...Okay, I do believe the time when the comment was made (like in usual comments) could be added (able to get hold of it's URL that way)

The feature comments seems quite a nice add-on actually. You can then feature comments which are very useful; such as constructive criticism :)

On another site I go to, there are entire news posts and help topics devoted to informing users on how to make good comments. The tip I give is to make a comment that is helpful, clever, or contributes to discussion in some way instead of simply giving praise. Let me give some examples:

-If it's a story, don't be afraid to point out any spelling errors, grammar errors, or plot holes/continuity errors that you see. Stories (especially fan fiction) on DeviantArt have a repuation for being total crap of considerably lower quality than elsewhere on the internet, and having better-informed authors will go a long way towards making DA a better place for story hosting.
-If you like an image, explain what you like about it and where the artist can improve to make it even better.
-If you don't like an image, explain why you didn't like it so they can avoid making the same mistakes in the future, but try to point out something you did like about it to avoid discouraging the artist.

I do like it my only complaint is that I can't fix old comments^^;. I mean there is some stuff I'd say I felt were stupid. Nothing offensive just well if you've ever had an embarrassing moment where you felt you said something made you look dumb. Those kinds of moments. I mean I'd like to fix my embarrassing typos than hide them:B. But other than that I really do like this:)
