In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Change to Literature Preview Images

Preview images for literature deviations are now placed within a scrolling literature thumb. In the past, any preview image a deviant set would take the place of the scrolling literature thumb, making it difficult to distinguish visual art thumbnails and literature thumbnails.

This change allows for a more uniform thumbnail appearance around the site while also ensuring that each artist is still able to comfortably represent their work.

Sta.sh's New Submit Page

The Sta.sh Submit page has been updated for all deviants, to match the layout of the new Submit Art page. When submitting your work from Sta.sh, you can now submit your art, Prints, and Premium Content from one page!

Change Log

  • Left-clicking on the "Download File" button for .PSD file deviations did not work. Fixed by shahyarg
  • The "Send A Note" modal on the Profile was blank on the mobile site. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Attempting to gift a Premium Membership without inputting a username would automatically pull the last username put into that box. Fixed by aMoniker
  • For a few deviants using Chrome, category menu options could be missing on some Gallery pages. Fixed by shahyarg
  • The legacy mobile site experienced message center loading issues on some devices. Fixed by aMoniker
  • An unnecessary horizontal line was present in the pencil menu on comments. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Some newly submitted deviations that had the main file changed were missing thumbnails. All thumbnails have since been regenerated. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Minor layout issues existed on the My Wishlist and Friends List pages. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Logging in from a browser in Windows 8 would display as Windows NT 4.0 on the Sessions page. Fixed by shahyarg

deviantART muro

  • The order of brushes has been changed to reflect brush type. Changed by mudimba
  • The default brush is now the basic brush. It was the webink brush, in the past. Changed by mudimba
  • There was a cosmetic glitch in submit progress modal. Fixed by mudimba
  • Startup time has been improved. Fixed by mudimba
  • An error existed when loading deviantART muro from Sta.sh Writer. Fixed by mudimba
  • "Import Image as Layer" was briefly broken. Fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh / New Submit

  • The styling of Sta.sh Writer thumbnails was inconsistent. Fixed by adahacker
  • Premium Content attachments deleted from Sta.sh were wrongfully counted towards Sta.sh's capacity limitation. Fixed by samshull
  • Clicking on some areas of the page didn't correctly deselect already selected files. Fixed by samshull
  • Updating a Group Journal wouldn't notify that Group's watchers. Fixed by adahacker
  • Dragging a big thumbnail onto a smaller thumbnail would visually break the stack. Fixed by samshull
  • Dragging a file thumb onto a Sta.sh Writer thumb would leave a leftover shadow. Fixed by samshull
  • Journals can now be added to and removed from "My Journal" at any time, even when published. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Pressing enter to finish the renaming of an item would wrongfully open the item immediately. Fixed by adahacker
  • When submitting, "My Journal" and related checkboxes now remember their settings more reliably. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • Removing a Writer document from the "Drafts" stack could fail, which would break the document. Fixed by kemayo and samshull
  • When searching for emoticons in the sidebar, there was no visual indication it was working. Fixed by inazar
  • The progress spinner in the sidebar would not display properly. Fixed by Alisey
  • Some <style> tags would show unnecessarily when editing a document. Fixed by Alisey
  • When creating Journal Skins, linear gradients had cross-browser issues. We are now working on improving this. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were pleased about the release of More Like This to everyone.
  • Feedback regarding storing deviations varied. Several deviants noted that they use storage as a place to keep deviations they don't want people to see, but don't want to delete for sentimental reasons. Others mentioned that they use storage as a place to temporarily hold deviations.

I've used the new "stash submit" a few times. How can I turn it off? can I turn it off? If I can't turn it off, can the default colors at least be made to match what I, a non-paid user see everywhere else I go on deviant art?

the glare of the white and blue actually hurts and makes me want to not submit.

being that I am poor enough that I cannot afford to give money to deviant art, this is enough of an issue that I will eventually leave.

of course, if that is the intention; driving away unpaid account holders, why not just be more direct about it? either way will get you a bad reputation (so if it's not your intention, fix it)

I love the new thumbnails, I like that now preview images won't mislead me when it comes to something being literature or visual art.

I've been thinking about suggesting something for a while now though, maybe it should be possible to move/copy/delete multiple images at once? Personally I find that when I organize my favourites or gallery the amount of time it takes to move many images that I want in the same folder is mostly due to having to do the entire move process over and over on individual images.
It may sound lazy of me but I'd like to spend less time moving. ^^;

I'm sure this was stated before, but I am not quite sure where to go, or if there is a discussion. But in DA chat rooms whenever I view a drop down menu, I always seem to be unable to post in the chat and therefore must reload the page. I heard it was related to Google Chrome which is what I am currently using, but is this an issue related to Chrome or the site?

It dawned on me:

I've never mentioned to anyone on the site how much I ABSOLUTELY LOVE sta.sh. I use it all the time, it is a brilliant idea. Whether I'm using it for muro or to put together drafts of next week's feature, I lovelovelove it, it is wonderful, and I wanted to say that. Thanks to whomever came up with the idea and worked so hard to make it as awesome as it is.

Wasn't sure where I should put this, so if it should go elsewhere, let me know ;)

Well, I would thank you for that preview image thing if I had any reason, but you just messed things up, argh!! :shakefist: Now, if my titles are longer, only the upper part of the preview image is visible in thumb and it looks LIKE TOTAL CRAP!!! Thank you for such a Christmas present, dA, but I could do just fine without it, to be honest. At least you should make the titles show up beneath the preview image instead of above it, so that they wouldn't push the image down like it happens now. But I guess that just won't happen, huh?

When we're in the deviantWATCH messages, and press select all and then remove, we should be automatically taken back to the top of the page so we don't have to scroll back up just to scroll back down and pressed select all and remove again for another 24 deviations.

And again, we need to be able to see more than just 24 deviations per page. I know you guys want to "save resources and bandwidth" but come on, 24 deviations per page when most large active groups generate around 200 deviations in a day. It'll take far more resources and bandwidth to generate 8 pages with 24 deviations on them, and 1 page with just 4 deviations on it than generating 4 pages with 50 deviations, or better 2 pages with 100 deviations or hell even better yet a page with 200 deviations on it.

At the very least, and I've brought this up before, give us infinite scroll so we can scroll through the messages instead of pressing Next and/or select all and remove just to advance and repeat the process all over.

That's another thing, every time you generate a page with only 24 deviations on it, and a person has for example 100 deviations to see from that stack, that means you have to generate 5 separate pages, each with 3-10 buttons. If you press the next button, that's one click, if you press the select all button and then remove button that is 2 clicks. 5 pages = 5 clicks or 10 clicks. How much resources and bandwidth are those 10 clicks taking up compared to 5? I know one thing, no clicks (infinite scroll) sure would be a lot better than 5-10 clicks any day of the week, and twice on sunday.

Also I know people who just press the x button on each deviation thumbnail saying its faster. That is a whooping 24 clicks per page! that is assuming they only have 24 deviations listed in a stack, other wise it will be more as each click brings a new deviation to the page.

Imagine how much resources and bandwidth is being used if say for example 200 people, each with 1000 deviantWATCH alerts go through their messages clicking x on each one. Now 1000 deviations will generate 1000 clicks on the x's. Or if they do it the hard way: ie select all and remove; 1000 deviations = 42 pages. select all and remove take 2 clicks, so 42 pages = 84 clicks. Yes that's not as many as 1000 clicks, but it takes a lot of time and I'm sure at some point it equals to the same amount of resource and bandwidth wastage.

I don't mean to be "That guy" but come on, you gotta see how stupid it is to continue running the site as it currently is.

I've been trying to get through back logged deviantWATCH messages for months now, and every day more pile up and I've kept an average of 10k watch messages since September.

Don't tell me to watch less groups and/or deviants either, the point of this site is to enjoy art. I shouldn't have to watch less people and groups, missing out on great art just because DA wants to save money by wasting people's time generating pages with just 24 deviations on it.

And just to show you more math, I have 10,740 deviantWATCH Alerts. That is 182 stacks, 448 pages, 896-10,740 clicks to go through them all.

Now for another matter. I've been waiting for over a month to have a bug report ticket taken care of. What is taking so long? #407792 violation reporting widget problem in Firefox was submitted Nov 17, its DEC 25 now (Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa) I submitted the report to the bug report people who sent it to the CEA people and its been dead in the water since.

Nice, but the author tags shouldn't have the triangular dent that crops the image.

Also, a poem can be a lyric. How about a Music category?

I like the new idea for lit thumbs, but sometimes they don't look very pretty. For example, long deviation titles on smaller thumbs result in the preview image being cut off (and sometimes a lot)! You can see a minor example of this on my page (left column, bottom of first widget).

Could we be able to turn off displaying the titles on thumbnails for individual deviations? That way, if we have our title already in our preview image, it doesn't need to be repeated on top, and it won't crowd out the thumbnail.

That would be really nice, especially since there are important things at the bottoms of the preview images as well as the tops, and it would be nice if casual viewers could see that too. :aww:

Thank you for your time!

Hmm. I'm sure that people could simply mouse over the deviation or click away if they don't like it. :aww:

People must be really desperate to do that, since it would probably annoy readers...

If you think about it, that still tends to betray your browsing/searching experience, because the thumbnail doesn't actually do the job it was designed to do, in the first place.

I'm not strictly saying 'hail the new system, period' (although I believe it does the most overall justice), but I favor the fact that, not only does it make it easier to distinguish lit. during browsing/searching, but it can also yield excerpts from those that feature a 'cover', just like all other lit. thumbs. I merely hope that suggestions that people make to change that will also address those concerns, as well (which the current change did). After all, we have to think about our audience and what's beneficial for them first.

suggestion for future update . . . when you scan photos in the mail prompt and there are more than fit on one page, you select "next" which takes you to the bottom of the following page. Is there a software change that could be made to take you to the top of the following page?

Thank you,

In sta.sh when I upload a ZIP pack, I need to upload a preview. To upload a preview I need to click on the little "preview required" pencil and find the file. I already have an Explorer Window open from the drag and drop upload of the ZIP file, so it would be amazingly handy if the preview image could also drag and drop. It's not that it's difficult to go and find the file with the browser, it's just a big disruptive to the user experience to have one work so smoothly while the other seems old fashioned ;D

Thanks for the hard work!

I think it would be nice to treat the scrapbook like an additional folder. Like, if you click on the icon on a deviation in your gallery and select "move to..." it should show up there to be moved more easily.

I'm not sure if that's possible since it goes through the categories, but... Yeah.

RE: Preview images for literature deviations are now placed within a scrolling literature thumb.

Is there a glitch in the universal transfer from the old thumb style to the new for some browsers?

In your article, you used one of saintartaud's literature entries [link] for before and after examples of how the older pictures are now embedded inside a scrolling thumb containing both the picture and the writing. At least for me, this writer's Gallery [link] still consists primarily of the older picture-only "before" thumbs. When I click on any of these older-style thumbs, I am presented with a nice LARGE view of the picture along with the literature. However, when I click on one of the embedded picture "after" thumbs, I see only a TINY thumb-size picture along with the literature. I very much prefer viewing the larger pictures along with the literature even if the original thumbs are confusing as to whether the deviations are pictures or literature.

But at least I am able to see both the pictures and their accompanying literature when I click on any of the thumbs in saintartaud's Gallery. However, when I try to view the older-style thumbs in Shadowsoflosthope's Gallery [link] , I am presented only with the literature and no accompanying picture at all. If I then return to the Gallery and click the same thumb a second time, I don't get either the picture or the literature; instead I get just a large grey empty background square where the deviation is supposed to be.

I just now did a "Newest" browse of the Literature category, and I got a combination of the above results. Sadly for me, this did not result in "a more uniform thumbnail appearance around the site" as your article indicated.

I use Safari Version 5.1.7 on an iMac.

I see where you're coming from, but I suspect that, most of the times, that doesn't happen. Many a time I've been fooled by lit. thumbnails and, because of how large dA is, I'm not too confident about how many of the related community may act in good faith with an optional feature.
