  • The text ad would overlap DeviantArt muro deviations when watching a redraw. Fixed by ZombieCoder
  • If a deviant clicked on the "More Friends" button on a Profile's Friends widget, closed the modal that appeared, and then clicked on it again, it would be blank. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Browsing Journals with endless scrolling enabled wouldn't display properly if a Journal contained videos. Fixed by muteor

  • For a brief period, trying to edit a Journal would bring up an empty page. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The OAuth2 application registration form didn't handle quotation marks properly. Fixed by muteor

DeviantArt muro

  • Under specific conditions, one's keyboard would be unable to respond the way it should. Special thanks to RestrainedRaptor for discovering the conditions needed to reproduce this bug. Fixed by mudimba

  • Editing a deviation right after publication would replace the deviation's url with an invalid one. Fixed by drommk
  • Saved Group destinations were behaving incorrectly on published deviations. Fixed by samshull

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's update!
  • Deviants were generally positive regarding What's Hot.
  • Feedback regarding which method used to submit Journals varied. Some deviants mentioned that they only use the Write a Journal Entry page, and others mentioned that they only use Sta.sh Writer. Several deviants mentioned that they use the Write a Journal Entry page for shorter Journals, and then use Sta.sh Writer for longer Journals and art features.
  • Deviants would like to be able to access Sta.sh Writer from the site navigation menus. Suggested by kowai-usagi
  • Some deviants would like to be able to write a new Journal entry directly from their Profile page. Suggested by Insane-Randomness

I don't know about you guys, but I am getting advertisements everywhere and I am a premium membership. Maybe it's just my browser, but constantly I'm finding that words are underlined and end up being linked to some kind of Ad. Can someone explain why something like this would be happening if I'm not supposed to be getting advertisements with being a Premium Member?

Also I agree with others in that something needs to be done about the More Like This addition. I'm not saying you should get rid of it, I just think that you could do with making it smaller or just making it into a button on the side bar that someone could click if they were interested in similar art.

well it's still doing it and I removed any kind of add-on that could possibly trigger it, so is this a code with DA?

Here is my review this way to browser Gives new starting artist and not wellknown wamizing artist to be more exposure to the newcomers of deviantart giving them recognition to them. When I first used it I was amazed on how simple it was to use this to browser commissions and I havetosay it was very simple to use . I haven't seenany problems with it unless you will put the popular artist on the list first since that wouldn't give people like me a chance to prove myself to be more known to more people worry. I think this is a good thing to expand upon deviant art and hope this comes out soon. Please feel free to check my deviant art page check out my stuff and/or make a commission ,with that I think is a good end to my thoughts on this .

I do look at my statistics from time to time. I like seeing the comments and various graphs.
 But faves aren't everything. ;)

Suggestion
Although less give aways have clogged up the footer, they need a separate category. Those are definitely not contests in any way, and should not be submitted there.
I think that it would be wonderful if there was a new subcategory called Culture> Give aways.
However, that category would not interfere with the rest of culture's journals chances.
In this way, informative features, real contests, news, etc. would have a better chance of climbing the footer ladder.

That would be one thing I'd really want to see.

There needs to be way to paste documents from MS Word to StashWriter so that the formatting of the Word document as far as font type, effects, sizes, and styles; as well as paragraph and line spacing would be preserved in the stash document.

A completely unrelated idea:
Submitting pictures. Let's say I've done pencil fanart for a manga. I could put it in
Fan Art > Traditional Art > Drawings > Books & Novels
or
Fan Art > Manga & Anime > Traditional > Books & Novels
and that confuses me a bit.
Help?

Well, you could but it in either because a traditionally drawn fanart can go into the traditional art catagory, but if you feel that it's drawn in a manga/anime style, in my opinion that would be a better place to put it.

Yeah, maybe DA could change the categories? We don't need the Fan Art > Manga & Anime section since we can use Fan Art > Traditional Art > Drawings > Books & Novels for that.
Then again, I don't think they'll change the categories.
Someone from DA staff here? :)

I'M BAAAA~ACK~!!!

"Many deviants are complaining about More Like This, and for good reason. It's horribly distracting and an eyesore on the page. I post a picture of MY ORIGINAL CHARACTER that, in NO WAY, is related to Danny Phantom, I do not want in a box that claims to hold deviations that are similar but in no way are. All More Like This is is a box for popular works related to the artist in one way, whether it be through a past POPULAR work or whatever. They should go by tags, thank you.

As *samuRAI-same mentioned, a nice feature to have for the notes is a way to search through them by sender/subject. I have well over 50,000 in my sent and 40000 in my inbox. I star some of the notes because I'm a nerd and I RP all the time with my friend. Also, another deviant, ~kydragon, mentioned sending an email to you when you get a note. I think that's a horrible idea, because as I said I'm always talking with my friend through notes and get them like every minute, so if you do decide on this option, dear God, make it able to be turned off. I'd hate to have 100+ messages a day.

I have no idea what 'What's Hot' is, but it sounds like ANOTHER Popular feature which, trust me, we don't need. You're an amazing site. It'd be nice if you actually listened to your patrons."

Yes, I said I'd repost that. [link]

It does go by tags, in addition to other things.

"trust me" <- That's not reassuring. Disagreeing with a feature is one thing, disagreeing with it without knowing its nature is one of the worst ways imaginable to approach an issue.

I don't really need you telling me what I know and don't, thank you. I said "sounds like" and I was informing them that they already had a popular feature. Other's agree. It hardly goes by tags. Maybe on a few, but I know deviations with tags that have nothing to do with the deviations in the More Like This box. "Trust me" is just a term, dear, people use it all the time. They don't actually IMPLY they deserve the trust the saying demands. It's just an English term inserted so your language isn't flat and voiceless.

Whether a handful of people agree with an assertion that's preferential by nature isn't the problem here. It's about understanding the hows and whys, so that any suggestion you make would be well-founded and beneficial to as many people as possible.

It's not just a "handful" of people, sir. It's a lot more. I don't even see your opinion on the subject, just your offense to mine. You have only attacked my arguments and thoughts and have not voiced 1) yours and 2) why you THINK they are wrong. You are just simply pointing out things of my thoughts and are just practically saying I'm wrong. Now, I said practically, not that you are exactly, so don't call out my English there either. So, what is YOUR position on the matters? Or are you simply just looking for an argument? If so, I'm not feeding you.

The site has millions of registered users and 1+ mill daily visitors; it will take more than a few thousands to enforce a preferential change, in general.

My own impression is irrelevant to what we're discussing, as I'm not here for the purpose of shooting you down; rather, I'm here to underline that if you want to make suggestions that will be taken under consideration of the staff, if you truly want to see results and you're not just here to vent your frustration, you must first thoroughly research the matter at hand. Your suggestions (whatever they may be, whether or not we're on the same page) will only be sound when you know the matter inside-out.

If you really, really want my stance, you'll find it a post below yours in my discussion with ~MartinSilvertant. However, it's worth noting that no means of selecting 'related works' is ever going to be perfect, because people can freely choose what category/tags/etc. to use (or the lack thereof, which can make the system less helpful). It would probably help more if we had community-based tagging (with some restrictions, of course, to limit the amount of abuse), in such a scenario.

Also, ~nopinky voices a serious concern, which is that the More Like This panel eats up space which would normally be used to showcase our own art. I also saw someone else mention recently that you're making us compete with other artists on our own deviation page. Don't you think that's ridiculous? You're limiting our exposure unnecessarily. This is also why I urge dA to do more research. Many of these features simply aren't well thought out at all.

It's not necessarily an exposure limitation, but I agree that the entire right pane could use a bit of a revamp.
One interesting suggestion I've seen about revamping MLT results is through a consolidation of the artist's gallery samples and MLT - for instance, the widget could have two tabs, one for the artist's gallery and another for related works.
Reply
:iconmartinsilvertant:
MartinSilvertant Featured By Owner Apr 3, 2013  Professional General Artist
How isn't it an exposure limitation? Without MLT, that area could be used to showcase more works from my own gallery. Right now it's used for other people, which is of no use to me. Also, let's say I'm a mediocre artist and in MLT it shows amazing designs, the viewer will leave my page a lot faster. Without MLT, I at least had one more chance to impress the viewer by showing him a bit more of my gallery. He can then decide to check other works in my gallery, or indeed leave the page. Right now there is unnecessary competition on your deviations. So it limits our exposure in a direct way and an indirect way.

Fortunately, MLT isn't working properly and so it tends to show my own work anyway. So until MLT starts being more accurate, things are not much different from before. However, I do notice I tend to leave a person's page faster because of the reason mentioned above.

In my defense, I said 'not necessarily', rather than 'not at all'.
To my understanding, MLT has some focus on displaying some of the artist's other deviations by design (and you can actually increase that amount depending on what tags you add to your works - someone noted that artists can add something unique such as their user name, to yield more of their own stuff), but I acknowledged that the system is far from perfect and proposed ways to make peace with both sides of the barricade.

I do apologize; I seem to have read over some of what you said. I do wonder though what you were implying by saying "not necessarily". I mean, you did counter my argument after all.

You have a point regarding the tags, but the fact that the system is based on tags is a serious flaw in itself. The potential to abuse the system is too great, and the potential for accurate results is too low. I've been on font deviations where MLT couldn't even come up with a single result, even though I've seen several fonts like it on dA. It just doesn't work.

As for your other suggestion, I would indeed be happier with a panel with tabs so I could select whether it shows the artist's gallery or MLT.

To be honest, I think there are no foolproof means - even exposure (like views and faves) or categories can be (and are) misused; but I believe we can minimize that effect via the reporting system, and probably with a sort of community-focused, moderated tagging system.

Of course there is no system without abuse/misuse, but I genuinely think the current system is so flawed it would be too big a job to minimize the misuse. I think if MLT is based on the categories as a primary algorithm and the keywords as a secondary algorithm, we will have A LOT more accurate results, and we wouldn't have to deal with the reporting system to keep it all functional.

I have plenty of things to mention dA should improve on. I will try to be as complete as possible.

  • Simple text formatting options for comments so we can use bold, italic and lists without having to add code

  • The ability to change the order of the list of groups a particular deviation is placed in. There are some groups I would like to keep at the top, but it seems to be ordered by date, which is just not practical.

  • Improve the notes system. Really, this needs drastic improvements! I have to admit I tend to talk a lot, but with a lot of text the archived messaged become incredibly messy. Also, if I want to delete notes, I can only select all notes from that page. I have pages of notes, and deleting them all costs a lot of time unnecessarily!

  • Speaking of the notes system, it would be fantastic if it had a real-time feature. Chat implementation, rather than the chat system there is now.

  • Speaking of which, I only found out about the chat feature yesterday because someone told me. How come I never knew of this feature? You seem to hide certain things pretty well. The site update blog is also pretty well hidden. Perhaps offer a link to this blog somewhere in the menu?

  • If the current chat system stays, then give us more options. A way to archive messages would be nice, and the option for time stamps and nicknames. I know dA is not predominantly a website for chatting, but if you're going to implement that kind of features, do include some of the basics of any chat program.

  • And speaking of the menu, I have a lot of extra space on the right side. You could add a help menu there, with such items as about, help desk, FAQ and this updates blog.

  • I see a tremendous amount of criticism on the More Like This feature. I personally like the idea of such a feature, but I think you know it's anything but accurate. Please refine the algorithms to detect similar work, or don't bother with such a feature until you do get it working properly. I don't think anyone is waiting for a More Like This panel which really just shows you More Random Art.

  • I have no idea why the search field in the menu disappears when you click on a deviation. I don't see how that can be practical in any way. I often have to go to an other page to do a search. Improve the menu.

  • And while you're at it, go for a menu with a fixed position, or the option to have it fixed or scroll with the page. I personally don't like having to scroll back to the top just to use the menu again.

  • In the group search you can choose 100–1,000 watchers or 1,000–10,000 watchers, but nothing in between. There are plenty of groups with about 500 watchers. Depending on the search term, the 100–1,000 option gives way too many result. What about an advanced search where you can specify a range yourself? This feature is only getting more necessary as the amount of groups here on dA grows.

  • I like the features and general layout of the submit page, but white is rather uncomfortable. Perhaps give us the option to select a few different tones?

  • The description field simply doesn't work in Safari. This has been the case for a while and it still hasn't changed. I believe it was you who once told me I should update my browser to the latest version, but I do have the latest version for Windows. Mac has a newer version, but there are also Windows users who use Safari, and it's not like it's an ancient browser so please add support. I don't want to have to use Chrome every time I want to add/edit a description.

  • The system to edit friends is very clumsy. At the very least make a division between people and groups. Also, do you think it's smart to have the option "friend" selected on default? Most people I add are not friends, and thus I would only like to see their deviations. If I want to be friends, trust me I will take the time to select that option manually. That's a lot less time than having to deselect most of the options for just about every person I add to my watch.

  • I would also like to see a full list of groups I'm member of when I submit my deviation to groups. Why do I have to copy/paste group names manually?

  • As long as you've used a particular group before, it does show up in the list if you type a part of the word (for example, I will get all literature groups if I search for literature, writer and poet), but some groups show up of which I'm not a member anymore. When I try to submit my work, it obviously says I don't have permission to do so.

In conclusion, there is A LOT of streamlining which can be done before you continue adding more features which half the people don't even seem to appreciate. I would really urge dA to spend more time doing research and experimentation before introducing new features, and don't introduce them before they work as they should. The More Like This feature for example just isn't ready yet, and so I can understand many people don't like it. They might like it if it actually works.

As nopinky (below) writes, "What used to be space for my art is being stolen to feature other people's art." It leads watchers and potential buyers to others' works. The same applies to "Favourites" in the case that we show them on our profiles. It's already hard enough to try to sell through DA as to promote others' art on our own space inside DA.
And wreckling, your new avatar is creepy, change it for a nicer one :-D

Okay, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be ignored... again, but here goes- Why is MLT so badly implemented? No, seriously. What used to be space for my art is being stolen to feature other people's art. I'd feature their art myself if I wanted other people's art on my page. Despite all the community's complaints, dA has given everyone who dislikes MLT a big fat "fuck you" and ignored them. If anyone at dA is reading this, just look at all the feedback on MLT- I guarantee you it's almost completely negative.
