Site Update, March 7

Thu Mar 7, 2013, 5:46 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and a discussion topic for the community.

What's New

The Forum Sidebar

A sidebar has been added to Forum pages! On the main forum page, the sidebar displays recently popular threads, and on specific forum pages, the sidebar collects and displays recently popular forum threads from that forum.

On individual threads, the sidebar includes Share buttons, so you can easily share a Forum thread that interests you. In addition, it includes a button that lets the creator of a thread close that thread on their own, which has been a frequently requested feature.

Change Log

  • In an effort to consolidate features, the Shoutbox has been removed from the Chat page after over ten years on deviantART.
  • The "Give" modal on Profile pages was sometimes cut off at the bottom. Fixed by aMoniker
  • Some special characters would break the Help Desk contact form. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Clicking on drop down menus on a Profile page and then clicking on a deviation on that Profile would still show the opened menu on the deviation page. Fixed by muteor
  • Deviation pages would not display if opened in a new tab from the Daily Deviations page. Fixed by allixsenos
  • Some thumbnails in the deviantART Shop were missing category info display. Fixed by muteor
  • The Poll widget would get stuck in edit mode if editing was canceled. Fixed by shadowhand
  • dAmn was not working for Windows 8 and IE 10 users. Fixed by shahyarg
  • The link to the My Correspondence page was misplaced in the menu on the mobile site. Fixed by aMoniker
  • Navigating from one deviation to another using the arrow keys would scroll the screen in addition to navigating to another deviation. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The button on deviation pages to see comments left when it was in Sta.sh was broken. Fixed by muteor
  • When previewing the Commissions widget, you could not rearrange the list order. Fixed by aMoniker
  • The Photoshop Actions sub-category in the Resources & Stock Images gallery did not allow .ATN files. Fixed by shahyarg
  • In the Message Center, there were issues browsing through deviations when starting on a single item and moving to deviations in a stack. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Character countdown displays used in some text entry fields around the site were broken. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The +Watch button disappeared from the Artists view for More Like This results. Fixed by yury-n
  • When browsing deviations from the Message Center, the "Remove from messages" button would carry over to an unrelated deviation if it was opened in a new tab. Fixed by muteor
  • The Sta.sh API's update call would erroneously require a file upload. Fixed by randomduck
  • When purchasing a Print, the finish would be incorrectly labeled as Glossy by default, even though the default option is Lustre. Fixed by shadowhand

Sta.sh / Submit

  • Uploading items were incorrectly labeled as "processing". Fixed by kouiskas
  • When submitting a Journal to a Group and "My Journal", the Message Center notification would only show up for the Group. Fixed by kouiskas
  • A "Deviations that are exclusively submitted to groups don't allow prints" alert would appear under certain conditions when publishing journals. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The "You have selected" section of the category selector would appear as empty when nothing was selected, instead of being hidden. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The download button on deviation pages briefly went missing. Fixed by helloandre and samshull
  • Errors in the submission form no longer display as browser alerts and are now more user-friendly. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • Writer documents would briefly display at max width in Sta.sh. Fixed by kemayo
  • Embedding a deleted deviation would make the embed disappear. It now shows a placeholder if the deviation is deleted. Fixed by Alisey

Discuss!

Giving on deviantART
You can give gifts (Prints, deviantARTGear, Premium Memberships, and Badges) to other deviants by going to their Profile and clicking on the "Give" menu in the top right of their page. Have you given a gift to a deviant? If so, how often do you do so? How do you feel about the process? Do you find it straightforward? What ways do you feel the process could be improved on?

I recieve llamas without knowing why. Not that I'm complaining - it's nice. But I would like to know why? Did the person like my pictures? Are they nice persons giving llamas to everybody? Do they like people thanking them for it on their profil?
So maybe you could add an option like a note on a present. Then deviants could add to gifts "Happy Birthday" "Great pictures" "Thanks for the helpful critique"

Hey, :devart: guys, don't think I'm always complaining about what goes wrong or not-quite-right here on this site. I myself feel a bit frustrated whenever I try to improve on something only to find out my improvements started making it worse. So.... you're not alone!

And may I say: a big thank-you to the small improvements you've made as of late. And they actually work! After a little re-tweaking, of course, but nevertheless....

Thank you.

Okay, I'm having some problems..
I don't know if this is just my laptop, but I'm unable to drag a deviation up into the favorites bar? I go to draw it but nothing happens. Even if I open up my collections prior to dragging the picture, it won't work. My brother told me I can just up to the little arrow next the the "add to favorites" button and click which folder I'd like to put it in, but I thought I'd share this problem because it should be fixed anyways.

Also, this is REALLY annoying. I've been trying to put my journal widget on my front page because it has art trade & commission info. Okay, so I put it there, no trouble, it's there. And then I refresh the page or go from somewhere else back to my profile, and it's gone. I don't know if it's only my account that can't see it, but I find it really annoying...

Tell you what.

If you insist upon it, then just let the Featured folder of any given Group be the one folder (and the only one) which you have to go into and move pics around inside. 8-) I'll accept it.

But Featured only! Not the first folder after Featured, okay???

Alright! Who removed the ability for Group admins to rearrange pics inside folders ("Featured" and created folders)?!?

It would be really awesome if we could organize our favorites tab by the name of the artwork, by the category the art is in, and by the name of the artist who uploaded it. This would be a great organizational update!

The "More Like This" changed, now there are many thumbnails within the box. Now I do not hate the idea of More Like This, I think it is a great idea, but the placement of the box is still distracting. It should be collapsible or moved down lower on the art page. Just my suggestion.

I don't see it in the changelog here, so I guess it's one of those "silent" code changes (argh), but I think the latest design for the "More like this" on individual deviation pages (the box of thumbnails to the right of the page) has been improved. The square thumbnails pack together neatly in a way that doesn't take up so much screen real estate as the initial design.

I would still like it if this box could be collapsed entirely, though (just a little +/- "windowshade" type thing - and either persist what the viewer chooses page to page, or be collapsed by default), or at least had a smaller number of thumbnails, because it still pushes the download link and especially the artist's own View Gallery and View Prints links too far down the page. I understand that More Like This is supposed to favor the artist's own work first but there's a very high chance that a thumbnail in More Like This will lead a viewer away from the deviant's own work (it's half the point of the feature: find other artists), which should at least not be the first option presented! I would think most deviants would like a viewer to first explore their own gallery and prints before surfing off to other deviants.

I don't know if I'm the only one that has noticed it or something, but the "More Like This" feature is LARGER now?
Yeah the thumbnails are smaller, but there are MORE of them now, and the box is about twice as big.

If you guys don't want to make it optional, then here's a suggestion.
Maybe SWITCH the "More From This Artist" and the "More Like This." boxes around. The "More From This Artist" should be the larger box with the 15 thumbnails while the More Like This should be the smaller section with the three thumbnails.

Think about it. 15 thumbnails at the TOP of your drawing's page promoting OTHER people's work, while your own work is promoted in a pretty much nonexistent box. In YOUR gallery.
That's kinda backwards isn't it?
It should be the other way around.

Youtube's done it for years and nobody died from it. You have to think from the pov of the audience, to understand the reasons behind this practice.

However, to be frank, I do understand that 'more by [artist]' results should be streamlined with the MLT interface. problem is they're trying to add a truck load of information on the side pane and it looks incredibly bad right now. :(

I'm not sure what you mean with Youtube.
Do you mean promote other videos (like how they do on the side)?

That would explain it. No wonder it looks like a huge clutserfuck.
They could possibly even combine the two into one box (like two sections in once box). That might be easier for them and may even free up some space on the side.

Thumbnail dragging on the sidebar and in my messages has broken. And the favorites bar has been moved below the prints buttons.

Return the favorites button where it was and fix the thumbnails please.

I like this update :) (and I love your icon $wreckling XD Just saying lol). But if you were updating the forums I wish you would have added an "Edit" button for the original post. I hate when I make spelling mistakes, or get corrected a bunch of times for putting the wrong information or just want top update the original post and I can't. :(

Also, I like that the "More Like This" icons were shrunk but I would still prefer it them to be in a drop down menu type of thing that I could close and open at my leisure. ^^;

Why this prints thing is now at the top of the deviation page, even higher than the +fav button? It's a shame. You should put "More from" higher. I always have to scroll down to go to someone's gallery. Gallery link is one of the most important things on the deviation page to me, not some prints that I will never buy.

When it comes to business, it's a rule of thumb to keep the accessibility of purchase-related buttons a priority.

Could you please undo the order:

1 Remove from messages
2 Shop similar prints - This print is not available
3 Request as print
4 Add to Favourites?
Or you could make it at least 1 - 4 - 2 - 3?

It makes it annoying because on deviations with download enabled, "Add to Favourites" is directly under "Remove from Messages", while on all the others, 2 and 3 are between them, so people will surely end up accidentally in Prints Shop...

And there have been many complaints about the position of More Like This, that it shifts attention away from the artist of the deviation that is being looked at and now it only got worse with more space containing more deviations... okay, on some deviations, MLT only shows 15 deviations of the same artist (in addition to those 3-4 as preview of the artist's gallery), but on others it shows 15 deviations of 15 other deviants (!), none of them by the artist concerned...

I often check out favorites folder of people I watch, so I was thinking it would be great if I could receive in my message center their new favs. I think this would greatly improve circulation of great art.

Channels system is helpful but I feel it's not for this.
First, I can only watch 20 people's favorites this way and I would probably watch more than 100.
Second, even if there was 100 channels, I would have to check them out every day because I don't know which favs are new which is annoying even with 20 channels.

Would be cool if there was some statistics showing where do your views and favs come from. From a group, a journal or something else. :meow:

This way it would be possible to score groups by their watchers activity. Higher score means that you piece will get more views/favs from that group. And I think this score would be rewarding to admins that work hard, vote on accepting quality pieces and make journal features. :B

Can we please have a way to remove certain information from the deviantID widget? I don't want my username and country to always be visible within that widget. I'd much prefer adding it via HTML code. Just a couple of simple checkboxes: ☑ Don't Display Usename, ☑ Don't Display Country, would be really useful. Having these things always displayed is the only reason I don't specify a country on my Profile page. :(

Please and thank you. :)

Every time I log in, I immediately get sent from the home page to my profile page. This is incredibly annoying. Is this a glitch or some new thing DA thought would be a great idea? If it's the latter, my god, change it back. I know what my page looks like, I don't need to see it first thing every time I log in.

Also, I don't know if it's some ploy to get more people to buy/renew their subscriptions; but seriously, do you not have any discretion when it comes to your ads? Those obnoxiously loud Lysol ads? Thanks for the blowing out my ear drums. And Sexy Russian Brides? Um... there are underage kids on here... Sure, it's not full-on porn, but it's not exactly an appropriate message to potentially be seen by 13 year old children. Seriously, have some standards.

Hi there! In addition to what ^Katara-Alchemist said, if you run into ads that auto-play sound, definitely report those. We do our best to weed out those ads, but every now and then one gets through. Reporting it will help us to ensure that our ad network is not becoming a hindrance to your deviantART experience. Also, as far as logging in and being redirected goes, I am not personally sure about that, but you'll want to file a bug report at the Help Desk about it, just in case. :)

Still waiting for the multiple picture fix, In the search through the pictures some show up 11 times. I have reported this. I'm trying to get all my friends to visit this site. Due to the repeating pictures they think that's all that's here. I said they should be fixing it. There is a lot of gifted people here. Endless art, from all over the world.

Hi, I have no idea whether this will even be read, but I have a compaint, or question rather.
In my messages, all comments and replies come up as links to another page. I get around 20 comments a day (yeah, not really a lot but still) and to me it's inconvenient and a little annoying. I don't know if this happes with anybody else or if it's just my computer. If someone could get back to me with an explanation on if and how I can turn this off, or an explanation for the benefit of this, I would really appriciate it. Thank you to all who make deviant art great.

While not that serious, but it looks like a bit weird design bug..
There's a clear good space when between 'Featured' and 'Browse' section in the gallery of a profile. However, when you click Journal, the 'Featured' and 'Browse' have only a very small space between them, making it look like 'Featured Browse'. While it's obvious that both are different links, it just looks...very constricted and awkward.
