In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

The New Mobile Deviation Page

The deviation page on the mobile website has just gotten a huge uplift!

In uplifting the mobile deviation page, we re-evaluated what the most important functions and information on the deviation page were, and altered the page to present them in the most easily accessible way. From there, the deviation page was given a visual refresh for ease, clarity, and simplicity.

Note Regarding Site and Account Security

Information has come forward online this week regarding a bug named Heartbleed.

We want to reassure you that deviantART was not affected by this bug.

However, to protect your deviantART account in the incident you use the same or a similar username/password combination on other websites, we strongly recommend changing your password on any and all accounts you use.

We'll continue to monitor this situation to ensure your experience is a good one.

Change Log

  • On the Submit page, the example thumbnails in the category selection area were not clickable, and in some cases were broken altogether. Fixed by yumeruby
  • In certain circumstances when submitting a Journal, the "Featured" option selection could not be changed, when submitting to the "My Journal” category. Fixed by yumeruby
  • For Internet Explorer users visiting a deviant's Gallery, if that deviant had a very large number of Gallery folders, some folder icons would fail to load. Fixed by yumeruby
  • Scraps could be submitted exclusively to Groups, but would not be included in the Gallery because of its category setting. Scraps can no longer be submitted exclusively to Groups. Fixed by lepidosteus
  • A very small number of deviants were unable to submit deviations properly at times, due to a rare error involving Groups they help administrate. Fixed by yumeruby

Sta.sh Writer
  • The autocomplete menu for mentions was sometimes missing user symbols. Fixed by kemayo
  • For the Commissions Widget, the "Add Media" tool was missing for example thumbnails. Fixed by inazar
  • The Sta.sh tab in the Sta.sh Writer sidebar briefly stopped working. Fixed by inazar
  • Sta.sh Writer's sidebar would not appear when visiting from an iPad. Fixed by inazar
  • Changing a paragraph's blockquote setting would not visually update the toolbar button. Fixed by Alisey
  • When trying to edit a Journal submitted to a Group, clicking the "Edit with Sta.sh Writer" button would mistakenly direct to a blank Sta.sh Writer page, rather than to the already-submitted Journal. Fixed by kemayo

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us:
  • Deviants were excited about Free Premium Membership Day. We hope that you enjoyed the events, and took advantage of the extra features!
  • Feedback regarding the integration of Sketchfab embeds was positive.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, several deviants mentioned that they use the Autocomplete menu frequently, although some said that they are more inclined to use the Autocomplete menu when the deviant they are trying to mention has a long or complicated username.
  • fillyrox suggested a "Recently Mentioned" option for the Autocomplete menu, so that usernames that were recently selected would appear at the top of the menu.

Discuss!

Collections

When adding artwork to your Favourites or Collections, how do you choose to organize them? How frequently do you browse your own Favourites and Collections? Do you create Collections more for yourself, or to share and feature artwork with others?

This week's Site Update includes the launch of the new deviation page for mobile devices, the integration of Verold's 3D viewer in Journals, and more!

I don't want to be very wordy, just want you ask: make subfolders in favourites collections, please... It would be so useful, believe me.
But I'll answer your question about organising favourites: now I make folders by deviants. Sometimes I do art collections by theme, I have something like three of them already, want to make much more if I just had time. But the problem is that I watch much more people then I have time for faving their artworks (I'm here just for exploring art, I'm an art appreciator, I have no deviations but I constantly browse artwork), and I already ran out of 250 folders in favourites :-(. And here's the way I want to organise favoutires with subfolders:

:bulletblack: Traditional art

(...etc)

It just seems the most logic organisation for me right now.

Mobile site.

DA we've been asking for an actual app for years now but it's fallen on deaf years. Every site in the world has one these days and yet, for being the "largest art site in the world" DA does not. It would make life so much easier. Please, it's 2014 already, not 2003. Can you get this done before the year 3,000?

That's not true at all, John! We're in the process of developing a mobile app at the moment, our developers have been hard at work on it for the past few months. :) We'll be testing it internally first, and then testing with small groups of deviants before releasing it to the public, but it is very much something we're focusing on.

Actually it's quite true, we've been asking for like 6 years for one. I am glad though that you are finally stepping your game and listening to people. A lot of people have left DA for other sites which are a lot more social media friendly; 500px, flickr, etc....all because they have an app and can upload straight away from their iPads or Galaxy tabs. I really look forward to see what you guys come up with! I have been pretty impressed with a lot of the changes which have been made except for one...portfolios...cough cough cough....that has all but been forgotten about lol Anyways, awesome news and I am pretty excited by it!

Ah, you are correct on that front, of course; I meant it's not true that it was falling on deaf ears, was all. I can say that the app is really great so far, I'm excited to see how it looks when it's ready to be released. Will keep you updated! :)

When adding artwork to your Favourites or Collections, how do you choose to organize them?

I organize them by theme/subject matter. I favorite a lot of fanart, so I have folders for all of my favorite fandoms that I like viewing art of! I desperately need sub-folders, though! Without them, we're stuck either having a manageable list of HUGE folders or a HUGE list of manageably-sized folders. Please help, dA!

How frequently do you browse your own Favourites and Collections?

I like to view them a lot! But some of my folders are too big to be enjoyably perused in a casual way, which makes me sad. I love organizing and looking back on things I've favorited in the past. Speaking of which, Deviations in Storage make me so sad and I wish there was an option to not have them in the folders anymore or at least not show.

Do you create Collections more for yourself, or to share and feature artwork with others?

I make them for me, so that I never lose art that touches my heart  But if someone likes the things I favorite, I would be so honored and happy if they found things they like by looking through my favorites!

I am not an artist, just a fan of art of all kinds, so I am looking forward to whatever improvements dA makes in this aspect! Please keep up the good work, this is my favorite site for admiring art

:bulletblack: When adding artwork to your Favourites or Collections, how do you choose to organize them?
I have multiple folders in my favorites/collections, and as organized as it is, it bothers how there are SO many folders because it makes it difficult to browse through. They're organized by what they are and/or what fandom they belong to (ex. I have a folder for Pokemon, one for Ace Attorney, a folder for dA stamps, a folder for custom box backgrounds etc.). But I wish there were subfolders so I could have a folder for fanart, a folder for dA things, and whatnot. It'd just be so much easier, and it would keep my favorites from getting too cluttered as time goes on (I plan to stay with deviantArt for a long time, surely I'll be favoriting/adding to my collections quite a bit). After all, our galleries have subfolders, and I don't see any reason why our favorites/collections can't have subfolders as well.

How frequently do you browse your own Favourites and Collections?
Very often, which is why it bothers me how disorganized it is at the moment without subfolders. I enjoy looking back and appreciating my favorite pieces of art; they are my favorites for a reason.

Do you create Collections more for yourself, or to share and feature artwork with others?
Usually for myself, but I do sometimes favorite artwork to be able to easily show my friends/other deviants art that I found was exceptional, and something that they just need to see.
