In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

More Like This: Now Open to Everyone!

In October, we launched More Like This to Premium Members, with an additional Limited Preview open to all deviants. During that time, we continued to test and improve it, with the help of everyone in the community who gave feedback or made use of our provided improvement tool. We're pleased to announce that as of today, More Like This has been launched to everyone. Many thanks to everyone who provided feedback and browsed through art to help us make the More Like This experience even better.

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Some deviants reported errors switching from the legacy mobile site to the new mobile site. This is a known issue on our end, and we will have it fixed for you soon.
  • Feedback regarding using deviantART muro as a critique tool was entirely positive. Some deviants mentioned that they would like to choose which deviations they would enable this on, if implemented as a feature.
  • All of the suggestions included in last week's update were met with positive feedback.
  • Deviants would like for their portfolios to be styled for mobile devices. Suggested by alexettinger

Discuss!

Please note: With the holiday season upon us, we will continue to post the weekly Site Update, but in a condensed manner. There will be no Discuss topic in the next two updates. Full-length Site Updates will resume in the first week of 2013.

Storing Deviations
One of the features we offer is a way to store your work away from the public, via the Manage Deviations page. If you use or have used the storage feature, what are your reasons for storing a work? Do you unstore things often, or do you leave them in storage for an extended period of time? Do you use storage as a way to permanently remove work from your gallery without deleting it, or do you use it more for temporary changes?

I recently took a drastic measure to prevent art theft and stuck all of my deviations into storage, then deleted my folders so as to save people the trouble of trying to find the works. After I got some sense knocked into me I took everything back out of storage, but there was a slight problem: since I MOVED everything into the folders, not copied, I'd lost access to all of my deviations, and had to use the Browse feature of my gallery to reorganize them.

Is it possible to make it so that this doesn't happen if one deletes a folder after moving something into it (like they had used the move feature, forgotten, and deleted the folder to reorganize)? Like, when a folder is deleted, the deviations are immediately moved back to Featured?

Although I like the "more like this" button, I miss the ability to just scroll though all the latest submissions with the "next " button or whatever it was. The main reason I do this is to see what everyone else is up to and when looking for inspiration that's the most efficient way to do it. So it might make sense to put that button back...perhaps beside the more button....just a thought

I really am happy and grateful for more like this, but I noticed that I could put watermark on it and now not? Is it not for every deviation? Oh and one MAJOR problem is that you can't fix your drawing or put a NEW logo on your artworks afterwards. You have to upload new. THIS is BAD. I'd LOVE to have this old feature back really. Please put it back. Or people will lose favourites and collections.

Hey there! You can add a watermark the same way you could in the past, you just have to change the View setting to something other than Original Size. In addition, you can change the main file of your drawing by clicking on the pencil menu in the top right corner of the "Publish Your Deviation" section. Hope that helps! :)

For the most part I use the store deviations tool to basically delete my unwanted deviations. Over the time that I have been on deviantart I have improved GREATLY as a photographer and have many unwanted deviations that I really don't want people seeing anymore. To delete all of these unwanted deviations takes much too long because of the current process. To save time I simply put them into storage with the hope that I will go back in later and delete them, which has not happen yet and probably never will happen. The current way to delete deviations is so incredibly time consuming that it is not worth the time. Putting them into storage is much easier. I would really like an improved way to delete deviations in mass that will not take hours to do, like the current system does.

there is still a problem when you click to view a deviation it automatically zooms in when your settings is to have it zoomed out. I have already reported this more then 5 times over 6 months ago and still no changes or debugging.

But with the deviation storage, I use it for many things and reasons; all of what was stated in your question. It is something that honestly if it was taken away after have been using it for 5 year I think i would have to come down to DA HQ and start a boycott or something XD There are things that you guys have added and changed, so I'm just hoping this discussion is just what you guys can do to improve storing deviations so I have a suggestion.

Now an idea I had was maybe part of the deviation storage you guys could add a 'queue' or 'publish on' like tumblr has. I'm not a big fan of tumblr but they have some really handy things on their site, and one of them are the 'queue' or 'publish on'. I'm part of many groups that run special events all the time and I make sure to hire help so that I don't always have to be on but sometimes it isn't enough. Sometimes I do have to be on DA 24/7 or counting down the minutes to when an event starts or finishes when I just want to sit and relax after a long day that I didn't think i would have on the day of the start or beginning of my events. If I could 'queue' something up or 'publish on' something that starts or ends, gosh it would help so much. I'm use this would help not just me but many people here on DA even you staff members that run the site. This is mainly and idea for groups but hell if it could be part of just DA over all that would be great too. This method of 'queue' or 'publish on' I use with the storage; its not automatic obviously, I have to go in and do it myself; but its one thing i do the most with the storage.

I use the storage to 'put away' something that I might want to re-post later when I don't have every much to show people.

Idea: When groups get double submissions (when a person accidentally submits twice) The second submission should automatically be declined. Right now you have to vote it out, or it expires. I find this frustrating in my groups because I like to have their inbox clean and I can't vote multiple times....
Also, could the founders position have multiple votes?

I think that we need a way of collecting comic pages into one single deviation, rather than scattered pages. I would rather be able to sit down and read a chapter of a comic rather than go on a hunt for multiple pages in a person's gallery. I'd also like to comment that deviantart is being left behind in regards to the comics and webcomics genre. Many other websites have formatting available to where you can scroll through comic pages or at least press a button that says "next page" or "previous page" or "first page." Mangabullet.com is one of the first that I can think of that hosts comics in a very nice, likeable format.

These are excellent suggestions about the need to collect comic pages into one viewable deviation:

We also need the ability to subscribe to certain folders within a group. For instance, I might be in an anime group but have no interest in Naruto-themed fan art, so I would uncheck that box so I would receive no Naruto-themed art from that group. Or maybe the group, while it's a great group, has a mature folder. Rather than fill my inbox up with mature deviations or blanked out images, I could unsubscribe from that folder.

Oh great, another way to see yet more unoriginal ANIME works. Is this why DA has been deleting alot of works recently? Keeping it clean for the consumerist anime/disney crowd? DA will never be the next Facebook, give it up, you failed as an art community, and you'll fail as a corporate venture.

Why can't i edit my images to add a new image - this is stupid - now I have to delete the old one and put in anew one - this will totally not work since I replace an image with a will return when the other party pays for my art trades - now I have to delete the whole file and put it in as a new submission.

ridiculous guys!

it comes up with a new format for editing so i'd have to say the new one - but when I tried to upload the animation, it's preview and change the whatchacallit to animation instead of just drawing it just wouldn't do it - must be a glitch.

Think I have to agree with a few people here, what's the word on DAmn? I understand this sort of process takes time but hearing a 'were working to sort out the issue' is a bit more reassuring than utter silences, less DA isn't changing then its probably worth knowing so that people can start finding their own ways to adapt to the issue.

Awesome! Although I'd like to suggestion something.

For us group founders, it's very irritating to have to personally visit the group's admin page for new notes or submissions. Is there anything kind of alert we can get which is included in the splintered menu for new submissions/notes/comments etc for groups? Maybe you could place the little house icon for group messages (when there are any) next to the correspondence message icon instead of under the menu that pops up when you hover your mouse over the little arrow?

My only issue with storage is that I look into my favorites and think, "what was that?"
I feel like keeping the thumbnail with some sort of 'stored' label would work... but then again artists have many reasons for storing their stuff and a thumbnail may be something they don't want showing up.

...oh well.
