Site Update: More Like This Updates

Thu Oct 18, 2012, 5:53 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

More Like This Updates

Last week, More Like This was launched to Premium Members, with a limited preview open to all deviants. This week, we're pleased to inform you that the limited preview open to all members has been expanded beyond just Popular deviations, allowing you to try More Like This on even more deviations.

We've also been working on some changes to the Browse enhancements that were made last week. We are currently fixing a bug that is affecting some users which causes the browser to jump to the top of the page when "Show More" was clicked. In addition, several users mentioned that the menu for switching between endless scrolling and page browsing was difficult to find, and as such we are in the process of making that more visible.

The More Like This team would specifically like to thank you for the feedback that we've been receiving. Your comments are helping to make More Like This an even better feature, and it is greatly appreciated!

Change Log

  • Prepared a header change for Spirit Day. Added by starvingartist and KnightAR
  • You can now use the CSS3 function linear-gradient in the background and background-image rules of your custom Journal Skin! Added by kemayo
  • The Twitter widget on a deviant's profile would fail to load tweets for that deviant. Fixed by kemayo
  • The Send Invitation modal layout for Groups was messy when errors displayed. Fixed by shahyarg
  • The "Watch Redraw" button on deviations made with deviantART muro did not match the width of other buttons. Fixed by shadowhand
  • If a deviant was given a Premium Membership by another user, the message in their Message Center would be blank. Fixed by KnightAR
  • Links on plain-text versions of verification and lost password emails were not working properly. Fixed by KnightAR
  • The Notes page would display strangely after sending a note. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Changing item quantity in the Shop cart would cause a reordering. Fixed by randomduck
  • Members were unable to drag and drop Notes into folders. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Wide deviations did not show the entire image when scrolled to the right, and then reduced from full view. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Users with expired Premium Memberships were unable to see a preview of some Premium Member profile widgets. Fixed by randomduck
  • The preview arrow on Notes would erroneously open the whole note instead of showing a preview. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The preview images of some newly submitted deviations were not loading. All files have since been restored. Fixed by shahyarg
  • The "Close" button for the Buy This Print widget on deviation pages would occasionally not work. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Many small improvements were made to the mobile site, such as properly scaled modals, message alignment in the Message Center, and thumbnail display. Fixed by shadowhand and aMoniker

deviantART muro

  • When semi-transparent layers were merged, the resulting layer would have incorrect opacity. Reported by daPatches and fixed by mudimba
  • An error could occur when attempting to give another deviant a brush pack from their Profile. Fixed by mudimba
  • In Firefox, all of the tool buttons could end up with the paintbrush graphic instead of their actual graphic. Reported by Krissi001 and fixed by mudimba

Sta.sh

  • The icon that would appear when viewing someone else's stack was the viewer's, not the author's. Fixed by kouiskas
  • For a short period, stacks would display with a green background instead of the usual white. Fixed by shadowhand

Sta.sh Writer

  • The icons of embedded Journal thumbnails were offset. Fixed by kemayo
  • Performance improvements have been made for when Writer is initially loaded. Fixed by kemayo
  • Removed excessive spacing before titles on unskinned Journals. Fixed by kemayo
  • The Google Webfonts list has been updated. Fixed by kemayo
  • Linear gradients are now allowed in background and background-image, for Journal Skins. Fixed by kemayo
  • The alignment for icons on the toolbar was off. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Feedback regarding what settings deviants prefer to use when browsing varied greatly. Several deviants mentioned that the method they use depends on whether they are browsing just to see what they find or if they are searching for something specific.
  • Many members liked the suggestion regarding allowing thumbnails in comments, though some members suggested that artists should be able to decide whether or not they want to allow thumbnails in comments on their deviations, if such a tool were implemented.
  • Some deviants would like a line tool in deviantART muro. Suggested by missingkitsune
  • Members would like to have the option to receive email alerts when they receive Notes. Suggested by Fantasical
  • When browsing using Endless Scrolling, some deviants would like a "scroll to top" button to be present at all times. Suggested by Alyssa-Rice

Site Navigation
There are several menus that can be accessed from the top of any page on deviantART, which give you access to a wide variety of what deviantART has to offer. What changes to the menus or the items that are offered under each menu would make your browsing experience easier?

Keep getting:
Error uploading file: Unable to create or update stash item
Then when I do get it to load the file it still isn't showing the file...just and blank spot with a ripped paper symbol at the top left hand corner.

"My Journal" takes you to "submit a journal", not to your journal page. That always annoyed me, since it's inconsistent with "my deviations", "my favourites", etc., and if you actually wanted to submit a journal you can use "Submit > Journal". At the least the name should be changed but I think the function should be changed.

Also, you know that custom menu that you can add to a bar at the top? I stopped using it when dA discontinued it (I think the right terminology is that I "unstickied" it?), anyway on some pages across dA I get a blank bar at the top of the page as if the menu is there, it just has no icons in. This has been happening on and off (like I said, it's not every page) for a couple of months now.

I can't get any of the deviations to show up when I log-on. They all have the red "X" in the upper-left corner. When i right click on it and click "show image", nothing happens. How do I fix this?

How are the emticons (Love, Joy, Wow!) etc. that appear at the righthand side when you are typing a reply to be used? Clicking on them, dragging them, whatever I do does nothing. They're cool and all but how do I include them in my posts? What's the point of them being there if they are essentially useless?

You just click on one and when you submit the comment you'll see the icon on your upper right corner of the comment box. Then, refresh the deviation page & you'll see a horizontal box with moods and smilies with various numbers beneath the artist description. Whatever mood your chosen emoticon was listed under will increase the number of the mood in that horizontal box. It ties into the overall Community Mood of deviantART when you view today.deviantART.com.

I've also been having the same issue with sta.sh as *catnappe143 though on my old account there is no problem. I'm assuming it's some kind of bug? Could this be fixed asap please? I use sta.sh a lot ^^;

when I upload a file on my sta.sh there's an error message saying: "Error uploading file: Unable to create or get folder for stash item" and aside from that when I move a particular file in a folder in stash (sta.sh uploads ### to sta.sh main gallery) the file disappears. what could be the problem? is this a bug?

The new uploading page. Change it. Or make it optional. Please. I haven't been able to post anything for days now. I miss the old one so much!

I was wondering if you guys were ever going to do something with "dead" accounts. Some of them have really interesting names, and it's a shame for them to go to waste.
Just Wondering, Natalia

Here's an idea, make lit tags big enough to fit the nasty new thumbnails instead of
dangling on the side like a ribbon from a grade school award.

I think a great to get premium members would be to sell gift card type things. Like iTunes cards but for deviantART.

Ok, I am getting pissed off with muro now. When I try to draw, it will minimize and go to another window or such and it will also only save half of the drawings that I draw in there now. Does this have something to do with the updates or something? Anyway, I would like to suggest getting that fixed.

Please
put "Bold" and "Underline" button, on the description area! A thumbnail button will be great too..
It's boring to write codes such as < b > </ b > all the time, it is a waste of time..

There is a script called deviantPLUS v3 that gives those types of buttons to comments and other text boxes, it's a little buggy though.

Is there any way to go back the the old style of editing/submitting deviations? The new style hurts my eyes with too much white space, and makes me not want to submit or edit anything new =\

I figured out how to go the old style of editing; you right click and open the link in a new tab or window.

Random Question!
I was clicking around my devWatch when I noticed there's a 'contest' thing that I assume means I can view all messages about contests there.

Is is (currently?) possible for a group to announce a contest and instead of have it as a Group journal, have it as a 'contest', or is that not what that feature is for?
Reply
:iconwreckling:
wreckling Featured By Owner Oct 25, 2012   Writer
No, that's not currently possible. The Contests section of the Message Center are for notification of contests run specifically by deviantART. :)

I think that just detailing the mature level in the system we already have today is more feasible. If it's about searching for mature stuff, it seems to work when you use the 'mature' key word, so I don't think it's required to create a new section just for that and debate on whether we should add it to the front page and other taboo aspects.

"Scroll to top"-the most useless button of all time.
Try pressing the Home button on your keyboard.
It's always available, on all web-pages.
