As with last week, this week's Site Update is a little different from usual in that we don't have any publicly visible changes. However, it's because our Devious Technology team has been at a staff retreat! During this retreat, they discussed our features, conducted hackathons, and created prototypes for new features.

What's New

Submit to deviantART Directly From SketchBook Apps

DeviantART is proud to announce that SketchBook users on iPad and Android tablets now have the ability to create and submit art directly from their devices to deviantART!

Our recent partnership with Autodesk has allowed deviantART to become the first community integrated into SketchBook  the professional-grade painting app that is easy to use for every artist. Merging these two powerhouse environments means that tablet users will be able to publish their creations from SketchBook directly to their deviantART accounts, and more!

Recent DeviantMEETs!

Over the past few weeks we've had two major deviantMEETs, one in Hollywood and one in Las Vegas! DeviantMEETs are always a great experience that bring people together for art and community, and we hope that in the future you'll be able to join us!

Your Feedback

Thank you for the comments left on last week's Site Update! There were a variety of scripts and user styles mentioned in the comments, ranging from changing the appearance of the site to changing or adding functionality. Some of the mentioned scripts include:

Okay, but do you know which version of Android you're using? This can be found be going to your tablet's Settings page and selecting "About device". On that page, you'll see a line that says "Android version". Please let me know what the number you've got displayed there is. :)

It's alright! At this time we do not have an official app, no. However, you can post your artwork from the mobile website, or you can upload to Sta.sh from your mobile device and submit later, if that's easier for you. :)

I've got a suggestion in regards to mentions: Being able to track them

Right now they only let the user know when their work (or their name) is mentioned-which is good, don't get me wrong. But for deviations, it seems that users are taking to mentioning works without faving, or even viewing them (instead just pulling them off of the add media bar)

It would be beneficial to users if, in the same Stats box that shows views, favs, comments and downloads, if it shows the number of mentions, possibly with a (where?) similar to the favs' (who?). Along with this, the user's gallery stats page should list the most mentioned one in the same paragraph as most faved, commented, and viewed.

It would be nice to allow the Sketchbook pro on the desktops/laptops to submit too and also allow the mobile version of the sketchbook to submit artwork from the application. I do use the Autodesk sketchbook application on all of my devices so that would be great if the mobile app gets on the wagon too. Just cant let the ipads and tablets have all the fun now.

I looked at SketchBook, but after reading the licence agreement I declined to install it. They wanted the right to inspect my device! I haven't checked since to see whether they've changed it, because I was so shocked. It looked nice software, but not for that price.

Hey, I have a question. So whenever you click on an outgoing link, know how it asks you if you wanna go?  Maybe instead (or actually it can still be there but eh) when you click on an external link, it opens up a new tab and goes to whatever it was? Cuz often times I find myself going around a bunch on the link and then when I'm done I have to go back 50 times to get back to dA lol. If it opened up a new tab, you could explore and then when you're done you could just close the tab and go right back to your dA, which was still open. Not a big thing but I think it would be much more convenient. :3
Anyone else have the same idea?

But wouldn't that be a bad thing as well?  Sometimes I would accidentally click on an outgoing link and it would ask me if I wanted to go to an outside website instead of bringing me directly to the site.  I'm kind of thankful that it is there because it prevents people from accidentally going to an unfamiliar website that could possibly contain viruses, thus messing up their computer.  I know that I sound paranoid and I know that it is highly unlikely that it would happen.  I'm not saying that I hate your idea, but I think it is better to be safe than sorry.  :) (Smile)

But how would that affect opening the link, if you chose to, in a new tab...?
And also as for what you're talking about it does that for every link... Including safe websites. It should be common sense that it is a risk clicking on anything on the internet.

Sorry, I don't understand your first question.  How would what affect opening the link?

As for the other part, I know it is common sense with the websites, but some people are less cautious about external links than others, and I think the question serves as a warning that the user is leaving the website.  Some people can overlook the fact that a link in, let's say, a comment, that doesn't directly tell the user where the link leads to, brings them to an external website.  One of my earlier Hetalia pictures was spammed with people putting links in their comments that didn't show where they went, but I had enough sense to not click them.

For example:
What if a troll or something commented on a user's picture saying "Hey, that's so cool!  Come see some of my works!"  And they put a link.  The user clicks the link, and (if the outgoing question thingy was never there) the user is brought to an advertisement website that is contaminated with viruses.  The user's computer catches the viruses, and dies.  If the outgoing message was there, the user would realize that the link did not lead to another deviantart account but instead to an advertisement website, and go back to their own page.

Wow, that was long.  Sorry if I sound too annoying.  I hope I'm not making you upset in any way. :( (Sad)

Well what I meant in my original paragraph was that when you clicked on a link, with or without the dA warning that if and when you clicked on that link it would open up a new tab for that link, instead of using that tab you had open for dA because then you have to go back. I understand what you're talking sabot now but in my original thing I was trying' to put more weight on the new tab thing. :b

And no, I completely understand that part. You make a good point, you're not annoying at all. Sorry if I sounded angry, I get that a lot but that's not how I'm meaning to come across lol.

For an idea, You should make publishing artwork into groups without having to submit it first.
Like the " Featured in Groups " should go inside the submit page and you can just select the groups you want it in and the subfolder for it.
It would save a lot more time in my opinion...

:iconravenshiddensoul:
RavensHiddenSoul Featured By Owner Dec 15, 2013
Maybe it would save time, but not all artwork submitted to groups is acceptable, copyright-allowed, or allowed by the groups standards! (Not to mention often miscategorized. I often have to decline submissions because people submit things to the wrong folder, or aren't following our Featured Folder rules.)

IF you want to save time in your group, ask your Admins to turn off the submission approval process! You don't need to be a super group to edit the administration settings; just go into the "Admin Only" area, should be under Manage Members, and for Members, use the Accept Artwork Automatically setting.

Bam, time saved.~
