In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Sta.sh Writer and Comments (Beta Testers)

Sta.sh Writer has been integrated into comments for Beta Testers! Sta.sh Writer allows rich text editing of literature and journal deviations on deviantART, and we are excited to expand this functionality to more areas of the site.

The new "Add Media" button allows rich text editing and multiple other features to be employed on these comments. Not only does it improve on functionality that already exists in comments, it also pulls in the full power of the Sta.sh Writer application into your comments, revolutionizing creative communication.

Email Verification for Account Security

Account security is something we take very seriously. In order to improve and ensure account security on deviantART, we've introduced a new notification in order to verify that your email address is still up to date.

Occasionally, you may receive a notice asking if your registered email is still up-to-date. If we can verify that your email is still usable, then you can confirm this with one click. Otherwise, you will be prompted to update your email address from the page you are on. This is a safe and secure way to ensure that your account information is valid, should we need to contact you for any reason, or vice versa.

Change Log

  • Clicking the "Contribute to Group" button on the deviation page would sometimes take users to that Group's Gallery. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Submitting to:" folder menu in the "Contribute to Group" modal did not open. Fixed by helloandre
  • Various issues with Commissions Widget and deviantART Points displays for logged out users were fixed. Fixed by adahacker
  • For Firefox users, using control+click (command+click, for Mac users) and control+shift+click on a thumbnail in a deviant's Gallery would not open the deviation in a new tab. Fixed by shahyarg
  • 'Limit' and 'Sold' stats were removed from the Commissions Widget. Fixed by helloandre
  • Publicly displayed birth dates were incorrect for a small number of users. Fixed by yury-n
  • After changing one's avatar from one's Profile Page, the pencil menu outline would still be visible. Fixed by shahyarg
  • There were some visual issues with error messages when submitting. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • One could still visit More Like This results for deleted deviations. Fixed by helloandre
  • When sharing a deviation on Twitter by using the Share button, the tweet would not include the artist's Twitter handle, even if they had their Twitter widget enabled. Fixed by DEVlANT

Sta.sh / Submit

  • For thumbnails of stacks where the top item is a Sta.sh Writer document, the thumbnail's title is no longer overridden by the stack's title. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When zooming in on an item in Sta.sh, browsing to the next one will keep the zoom preference. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Closed a loophole that allowed other users to view random Sta.sh item titles (but not any other content). Fixed by drommk

Sta.sh Writer

  • Clicking on a stack in the sidebar could break the sidebar and not show the stack's contents. Fixed by kemayo
  • The search box in the sidebar was not properly aligned after searching. Fixed by kemayo
  • Pressing backspace sometimes wouldn't delete a thumbnail. Fixed by inazar
  • When editing an old Journal entry, the button still said "Submit Journal" instead of "Update". Fixed by kemayo
  • When leaving a comment in Sta.sh, the Emoticons tab was selected initially, instead of the Conversation tab. Fixed by kemayo
  • There were some visual issues, when previewing a comment in Sta.sh. Fixed by inazar
  • Image controls could continue to display if they were visible when a Sta.sh comment was submitted. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us:
  • Deviants were pleased with the launch of Undiscovered
  • Generally, deviants liked the launch of the new Write a Journal Entry page.
    • Some deviants mentioned that they would like the setting for HTML or Rich-Text mode to be retained from one journal to another, rather than defaulting to Rich-Text mode each time one visits the page.
    • Other deviants mentioned that they would like the Media sidebar to be closable, so that they can use it when they want to, but don't have to have it open if they don't want to.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, some deviants said that they prefer to use HTML mode, and others replied saying they like to switch between HTML and Rich-Text modes.

Discuss!

There're some errors in Sta.sh when I tried to delete a group of files, it won't disappear but the folder under it was deleted!! I lost many files trying to delete the unwanted file without noticing them disappear!

Please develop an undo or lock button or something to protect important folders!!

There's a little problem when one copy/paste text into the comments box, it seems it copies the html codes of what you're pasting which is a problem when it even copies html that doesn't even work on this box, i.e: h1, etc and then the comment turns like a mess. Ex: comments.deviantart.com/18/187...

In groups, when a deviation gets put into storage by the artist, hitting the pencil button does not bring up a list of where to move it/copy it, or delete it.

Hiya! What do you dislike about it? Admittedly, some of the change was necessity, as per Twitter's branding guidelines and removal of their previous API, but if there are aspects of it within our control that we can look into, then we're not opposed to doing so. :)

I normally mention what I dislike just this time I was too grumpy to include it. :giggle:

I mostly dislike that, if you post a link to a deviation on dA, that the images get auto-expanded in the twitter widget. It would be good if there would be an option to disable the auto-expanding.  (I saw that it can disabled when a user uses the widget configurator on twitter. :shifty:)
The widget just takes away way too much space:

And there is a mistake in the Twitter Widget, you have to chose "Yes" when you want to hide @replies, and "No" to make them visible again.
And I am not really a fan of the user icons from twitter as well as the name (even though I understand that the names are shown because of the retweeted tweets.)

That are the reasons why I will remove it from my page and I use a stylish script to remove the parts that I dislike, so I don't have to see them on other profiles. :B
It looks like this with my Script:

We're looking into the auto-expand thing to see if it's a setting that we can let each individual user choose for their widget, and the replies thing is a bug, we'll have that one fixed in a bit. Usernames being displayed is a branding requirement on Twitter's part, but the icon thing is something that we'll consider, anyway. :)

Advice for Commissions

My #1 advice is don't use the commission widget. In it's current state it is broken/incomplete. It takes a cut of yours/theirs profit every time.

Instead work better on socializing & marketing outside of the widget. You can also utilize etsy or other websites which don't take a huge cut. Also, selling on dA where other skilled artists eagerly drop their prices to pennies won't get you much when you're trying to make a living.

Locally, ask around at your town's museum, library, etc for displaying your art. You can sell at local craft faires as well. Sometimes you got to pay a table fee (eg, $100) so make sure you can sell enough to meet the fee & make a profit.

Never put sales to your artwork or that's all people will expect. Your art is an investment, it should never depreciate like a used car.

Keep trying new ways to market. Make friends, do trades, take chances. Be responsible & honourable in your dealings. Make contracts & hold the buyers accountable to them. Commissioning is somewhat like a rollercoaster (we have our ups & downs) so prepare what you can & keep looking forward/optimistically.

Lastly, have fun. It's your art, enjoy it, share it & expose it to the world!

What do you mean by 'occasionally' notify us to make sure our account is up to date? If it's more than once a month I'm likely to put it in my spam folder as I like to keep the e-mails down to essentials. Or will doing so & not verifying each time lock my account?

If someone comments something bad on your things, hide their comments. If you've made a comment you regret, ask the person if they could hide your comment. It isen't like there no opportunities

They're not ignoring that because of technicalities, but simply because they don't want to allow it. It may sound harsh, but it keeps things consistent and people alert about posting something they may later regret and wish to take back.

I understand the point of view, it's great as concept just generally makes no sense as a final. There are major spams, idiotic messages by kids and adult idiots, etc that need to be deleted forever and not just hidden. Also what about double, triple, ten times posts etc. all those errors that can happen by mistake or on purpose, you can hide all that but you can always click on it and see it too. Not you but someone else who comes across your page etc. It's a dumb solution and irritating also time wasting... We need a permanent delete option not just this good for nothing 'hide comment' useless garbage.

That can be abused as well, though. Plus, it can break comment nesting - in the end, you'd kind of need a palceholder, anyway.

Neither way is perfect, but the current way seems a noticeably lesser evil. Unless someone goes out of their way to stir up wasps' nests, they won't have to worry about heavy spam.

For Firefox users, using control+click (command+click, for Mac users) and control+shift+click on a thumbnail in a deviant's Gallery would not open the deviation in a new tab.

Used to be able to open tabs when clicking on deviations in the footer, can't anymore.
In IE10, I can still right-click; but anything else (right-click in Firefox, Ctrl+click, middle click) will open the deviation in the same page. :saddummy:

I'm having the same problem! It's really frustrating to me. Every once in a while, if I right-click in Firefox on a deviation to open in a new tab, it does what I want it to, but most of the time it just opens the deviation on the same tab. What's really weird is that it isn't even consistent with what it does... but it's pretty annoying.

When will you comment on More Like This. You have had complaints for the last 3 updates from people who feel that as an Art site we should be able to promote our works without having to promote others, that we do not choose to promote. Especially when we are paying premium membership to use your services.

Do you have some engineer that you have to mollify that had this very cool algorithm and you feel you cannot cross him?

Many of us feel the amount of thumbnails and the location of the thumbnails is detrimental to people viewing more of our works. There are 15 larger thumbnails of others work on my page and then 3 smaller thumbnails of mine below these fifteen.

Is this a plan to eventually charge people to get shown on More Like This?

I've begun to look into Imgur as an alternative to dA. It doesn't spam other's artwork or thumbnails on your pages.

The only downside to using Imgur is you don't get llamas, 'points' or constant watch/fav/spam messages every day. Hmm..

I'm so confused. I thought Undiscovered was a beta thing? why am I seeing it? Where's the Daily Deviation page? this has happened twice now. I was seeing More like this what it was still supposedly Beta too according to these journals. Am I misunderstanding or missing something or did I become a Beta tester?!

Undiscovered was released site-wide, it was never a beta-tester thing.
The daily deviation page can be accessed via the menu beside the deviantArt logo in the header. You'll find it in the section Find More Art. Or, if your channels page it set to daily deviations in the footer (bottom of the screen), you'll see it there too, unles you collapsed to footer bar.
More Like This has been taken out of beta for a few months now, and released site-wide.

In order to become a beta tester, you must have a premium membership, and then in the settings, you can set it to become a beta-tester. Beta-testers are identified with a '=' beside their username, like mine.

I myself have had a big problem with sta.sh, in particular, the Sta.sh Writer. Since the last update, I haven't been able to write journals at all. Simply because I cannot see what I'm writing, nor is there any place to put a title. I don't know if this is because Sta.sh just won't load, or what. But it isn't my computer, I've tried uploading journals on all three of the computers in my house on all available browsers, and none of them worked.

I hope you will look into this- it isn't good that a problem like this on something that is supposedly being integrated into the whole of this site to be so glitchy and run down.
Thank you.

Ok, seriously, NOBODY likes sta.sh. It's so glitchy and inconvenient that I dont even know where to begin.
The new submit is okay I guess, though.
But the new journal writer... I CANT EVEN WRITE JOURNALS! On my desktop computer, it wont even LOAD. Because STA.SH ITSELF WONT LOAD.
It's so glitchy and stupid and I just hate it...
Plus the new journal writer is bulky and distracting, very inconvenient as well.
But the new comment writer... no. So, if I am unable to first use sta.sh writer on my main computer (Which uses ie 10, dont judge) and now journals, WILL I NOT BE ABLE TO FUCKING COMMENT?! (=Kokyal0rd Would have told you this himself, but because he's a beta tester, HE CAN'T MAKE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT IT!)
This is madness! DONT FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN!
I LOVED dA the way it was, it was perfect! Stop making stupid sta.sh take over EVERYTHING! I PAY to get a better experience on this site. But you're ruining it by adding all this shit we dont want or need! So what the hell am I wasting my time and money on this site for? Why am I suggesting it to people? You're ruining EVERYTHING!
Nobody even LIKES sta.sh!
But you don't care about me, hell, I'm just one user. Who gives a shit about me? But seeing as so many people have the same thoughts as I do, you're basically ignoring the bulk of the dA community and just not giving two shits. You're only listening to the people who AGREE with you.

So, here are my suggestions to make it better, or at least tolerable.

1. Use deviant green. Everyone loves it, it's pleasing to look at, and whit just doesnt blend with the site at all. Sta.sh should be kept more separate.
2. Please try to fix the bugs with sta.sh writer. If it's glitchy, everything else that uses it is glitchy. So that's a huge problem.
3. Actually try and listen to the people. We don't want all this crazy sta.sh stuff. We signed up for, and paid to(?) get premium for DEVIANTART. Not STA.SH.

Sorry for sounding like an asshole. But ugh...

Have you asked EVERYONE what they think? Because I guess there's more people than you think, that likes sta.sh - It just tend to be the ones who dislike it that are loudest.
I can agree that it's a little annoying it's moving on to everywhere. However, I guess (even though it might sound rude, it's not meant to be) your friend must simply get a better computer or upgrade their internet a little. Internet explorer causes lots of troubles. They could try such as firefox instead.
Because it's not the staffs job to take care of each single member

Note, that I'm not trying to defend the staff. After my opinion, most of them are really lazy and doesn't listen to their community.

I know there are a lot of people who like sta.sh. I like it, just not the writer.
Well I guess that's the fault on my part, I only ever see hate for it and not really anything good.
But saying EVERYONE hates it is stupid, of course some people like it, I didn't mean every single user on this site. You could say I was referring to the people who dont like it as "everyone".

Well, he has a newer computer and uses chrome, so I'm not sure why it doesnt work for him.
