This week's Site Update is a little different from usual in that we don't have any publicly visible changes. However, it's for a good reason. Our Devious Technology team is currently at a staff retreat!

What's New

Devious Technology Staff Retreat

The members of our Devious Technology team are currently in Canada for a staff retreat! Because the team is remote-based, this is the first time some of our developers have met one another in person!

The team is currently hard at work on a variety of upcoming projects for the community, and being able to interact face to face makes for a new, creative environment for them to code in as a team. Stay tuned for updates about the projects they're working on! #ItsComing

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you shared with us:
  • In response to the Discuss topic, some deviants mentioned using music as fodder for inspiration, while others mentioned using the internet to find lists of prompts or random prompt generators.
  • A commonly mentioned issue was that artists have inspiration to create at times when it's not possible to create, and then lack that inspiration when they are able to do so.
  • Some deviants mentioned in comments that they were encountering issues with the Message Center; these issues have been resolved at this time. If you encounter anything further, please file a bug report at the Help Desk.

Discuss!

Login Options

When creating an account or logging in on a website, do you use social login systems to do so (e.g Login with Facebook, Twitter, etc.)? Why or why not? Would you find it useful to use your deviantART account to easily sign in to other creative apps?

People really need to quit griping about the hashtags. Honestly, saying that DA using hashtags turns it into Facebook is completely ignorant, and you people need to wake up and take a good long look at what DA truly is. You don't seem to realize that when the internet shifts, you either have to shift with it, or end up with a horribly glitchy hunk of garbage that no one in their right mind will want to use. Yes the hashtags are visible, which I actually like because it helps keep people from using irrelevant tags (which ruin searches). But they're small, and not in the way or obnoxious. They're nicely folded into one line underneath the title in an unobtrusive size. Relax already. All of you who are threatening to to leave because of the hashtags? Go right ahead, and take your whining with you. DA will be much nicer and more enjoyable without your complaining.

I've been here for a loooong time under one account or another (more than 8 years). EVERY time DA adjusts itself to move with the times, a ton of people (usually non-subscribing members and/or members who've been here for less than 2 years, but not always) jump up and down throwing temper tantrums going 'Put it back!' Then when DA doesn't do so within 24 hours or less they accuse it of not listening to it's members. Funny that. DA actually DOES listen to it's members. It does NOT, however, blindly conform itself to the whims of it's users. And when it realizes that it's users have a point? It is adjusted accordingly. Not immediately, they try to take the time to do a good job, but once everything is decently in order things shift towards what the members want in a way that is still workable with what DA needs.

Remember when More Like This first came out? Perfect example. EVERYONE, me included, was outraged that such large thumbnails of other people's work (often work that had nothing to do with the main deviation being viewed) were plastered right next to their own, at the top of the page. The thumbnails were huge and extraordinarily detracting from the original deviation. But now look at it. It's name has changed to More From DeviantART, and yes it's still there, but it's much smaller, and it's further down the page so you actually have to scroll to see it. Plus, it's a lot more accurate as far as choosing similar works. Maybe not 100% perfect, but it's hugely better than it was.

Point is, the internet is continuously updating, and DA has to keep up somehow. They may not do it perfectly to you the first, or even the fifth time, but DA DOES take into consideration the millions of member voices squawking when they see something they don't like. Then they analyze the information that's being rudely shoved in their faces and try to come up with the best solution possible as quickly as they can. But it takes time.

So, either learn to deal with it and enjoy DA, or go gripe somewhere else. *End rant*:grump:

No I probably won't respond to your response, but feel free to vilify me all you want because I think being upset over something like hashtags is idiotic.

New hash tags require more key strokes and the memory which was useful for similar postings is now gone.
I hate it.
Please no more improvements.
Reduce your staff, dA doesn't need improvements, go back to what was.
Start the staff reductions with those who implemented the new hash tag system and didn't throughly test it.
Save money, reduce your staff, go back to what was, it was better.

Adding social media sign-in to dA would definitely attract more users - Tumblr, Reddit, and Twitter specifically have a lot of talented artists not yet on deviantART.

I currently use deviantART as a sign in option for a few of my apps (including the artist alley application for an upcoming convention that would allow users to select deviations from their gallery) and I would love to see it in use elsewhere!

If you happen to be a nodejs developer, check out my passport-deviantart library as well: github.com/LabLayers/passport-…

Who the heck changed how we enter deviation submission tags?!? Shouldn't we still be allowed to enter them how we feel they should be formatted, like we've always done?!?

And entering them is alright, then you submit your deviation.... but then when you want to edit your deviation, you look and you see the tags you entering (in the order you had entered them) are now mixed up!! AUUUGH!

They might have run into problems since their was a high tech staff retreat those.
Going to Canada???? But...oh well Hire new ones then DA.
It's not hard as it seems.
I know some people in California maybe they can help.

I just hope this site doesn't change anything but being Deviantart to Deviantart as it was few weeks ago.

Yo...  what is up with all the hashtag crap in the tags? used to be able to copy and paste...  which was very convenient....  ??????????????????????????? What's going on with that and how are you fixing the copy and paste abilities when submitting art?

I personally wouldnt like logging in from other social media sites.
Im also very annoyed at the ''mature content'' systeming. I constantly see very revealing photos of women on deviantART (on the front page) without the mature content warning. I do have mature content blocked for me, so this is very annoying.

There needs to be an option for users to block art they don't want to see, instead of having a moderater do it. Not always block it as mature content, but just hide it someway.
Also, I think DA needs to be a lot stricter with it's mature content policies.  I've run into stuff that really should've been blocked and I'm tired of it.

I don't want DA to have a FB login. It's convinent, sure, but I like things being seperate.

what you need is not a false saving animation because If I "save" one of my art on deviant muro it doesn't come up you need to fix it by making it actually save but until then my art is either a one piece and submit and go or stop and leave it for a while to find it all ruined

I avoid using social login systems for creating and accessing accounts on other sites pretty much at all costs. I vastly prefer keeping my social network/media activity completely separate from anything and everything else I do online; the social sites I use already know enough about me as it is, and it makes me uncomfortable to give them the opportunity to learn anything about me beyond what I already post there.

I work hard to keep my account and privacy settings configured so that I don't leave a breadcrumb trail for social sites to track me all around the internet. Logging in to other sites via my social ones feels a lot to me like volunteering information to an already info-greedy Big Brother, and that just creeps me out.

A "delete comments" button would be great. Since everyone's together, maybe you could discuss it. Hiding comments gets really messy really fast.

but logging in with other accounts is not something that I do. Ever. I think it's kind of silly and I don't get why other people do it.

Please give us option to maybe delete unwanted comments , or disable comments on a persons frontpage. This prevents trolls from being able to spam.
Also notes, make a search system there.. having a problem finding old commissions notes.

I generally hate it when websites offer only the "login with facebook/twitter/google" option... what if I want to keep those things separated? So my preference always goes to create a separate account. And I don't even want to have a facebook, actually. I don't know if I'd find it useful to share a login with a creative app... if it's something deviantart-related, like .stash, it makes a sense... But if it's about general apps, I'd like to keep them separated, probably...

I use a different log on system abso not going to EVER allow f.b. to have any further access to my records or passwords(fuck me very much) No, I disagree!  I don't have a problem with them (FB) currently, but many writers  who do and it is a pain having to censure your material. My name here, is as with Twitter and some what to that on word press I feel safe here, that what I decide to post will not be subjected to random unnecessary scrutiny, that is why I'  m here. When available, I do sign/log in using facebook. It's always easier than creating another account and having to remember another password. Probably hipsters and haters will freak out, children will throw tantrums, but I wouldn't mind that kind of integration.
