This week's Site Update is a little different from usual in that we don't have any publicly visible changes. However, it's for a good reason. Our Devious Technology team is at a staff retreat! During this retreat, they're discussing our features, conducting hackathons, and creating prototypes for new features.

What's New

Welcome to Holiday Headquarters 2013!

We're happy to announce the return of deviantART's Holiday Headquarters! Follow the Holiday HQ article each day to discover deals and special offers throughout this holiday season.

Important Notice About Account Security

There was recently an incident on another website, completely unrelated to deviantART.com, that resulted in account email addresses and passwords for that site being leaked online. While the information was not deviantART-related, your deviantART account may be at risk if you use the same email address and password for multiple sites. To protect your deviantART account, we strongly suggest that you change your password.

Your Feedback

Thank you to those who commented on last week's Site Update! It was great to hear about the deviants you are thankful for, and even more so to see deviants interacting in the comments!

DeviantART Scripts & Hacks

When browsing deviantART, do you use any user styles or scripts to alter the appearance or function of particular areas of the site? If so, what do you use, and why do you use it? Are there any "hacks" or tricks you use that most people are probably not aware of?

I'd like to report a problem... For some reason each time I add groups widget to my profile, it freezes up dA. This did not happen to any of my other widgets so I thought it was kind of weird...

I'm the developer, and one of the biggest users, of Deviant Love, a browser extension that gets all deviations from a Faves page or Collection, groups them by artist, and displays them in "most Faved art" order.

The comment I'm about to do is sorta like a warning. There is a rumor that a horible hacker goes into pages and does stuff like write in journals saying " I hate you all. Go die." I'd say more but I don't want to scare you.  So go just look for the journal entry I made titled "Hacker on DA!!!" Please be aware of this hacker because he could get you banned or blocked. The hacker can even get through you e-mail and password!

Well, I noticed that even if the "Download" button is off in our galleries, a click-right on our mouse will still enable a download of the image... But when you think about it, even if the mouse-click is not possible, anyone can do a print-screen at any time, or just use a camera and take a photo of the screen... So I guess once an image is on the Internet, there is really no way to protect our works!

I have a question. Is there a place or a way to submit one's gif animations to the "Add Media" in the Comment windows? For example, I wanted to put a little cake in one of my comments, and there wasn't one I liked. Also, the cookies are rather small and I would add muffins! He, he, he!

I love the group notifier : Group Notifier by electricjonny it does what the site doesn't do but should: let you see in the header what group messages you have from which group and what type - including the ones the site DOESN'T notify you of like profile messages. It's a godsend and a huge time saver when you have more than one group and means you can avoid missing comments etc that you would otherwise not even be notified of.

I use AMALL  Amall by Dediggefedde to save me time so I can give llama's without going to someone's profile AND easily see if I've already given them one.

Since the notes system doesn't have a search (dA Please add one! I'm surprised it's not already there) I use Dev_Note_Search2 by Dediggefedde unfortunately it sometimes gives dud results so it's not as good as I'd like but it's better than no search at all.

Profile pages have fixed skinny width text which wastes a lot of profile "real estate" so I like to use Wide Widgets! by SimplySilent to help reduce the length of my profile and use the width of the widgets to their best.

And then there is Style: No Submit Button by ginkgografix which makes the site just that little bit prettier as the submit boxes are just so ugly and the submit button for them is in the header already so it's duplicating what is already available.

In my dreams all these would be standard parts of dA but well... dreams are not usually reality ;)

Uh yeah that's nice....but anyway...instead of doing these things, can you guys spend more time on fixing some errors? Most of my old pictures have been reduced in size...I always had them at 600 but it seems dA has put them down to 400. This is making me have to go to them and edit them...one by one. :/

No holiday break  time for me....I gotta fix what I didn't do.

I've considered using scripts, but I'm always worried about adding extra programs/functions to my computer. I've had a few nasty computer viruses, so I try to add as little to it as possible. I just don't trust third party programs. :hmm:

I use scripts and styles to make sure that deviantART works usably (as bugs happen in my browser), and one script, which is intended to get past a bug, also allows to toggle modules on a profile.

So, does anyone else want a search bar for your favourites? It would be great if I could search for things like you can in someones gallery without having to wade through hundreds of pages and thousands of deviations ._.,

That would be awesome to be honest.

There's times where I remember a piece that I know I favourited, but I have too many favourites to even dare trying to sift through page by page trying to find it again to look at it again. Or even for sorting those favourites I saved years upon years ago that I would want to sort into my collections now, as I couldn't then.

I once used a user style which changed the colors of the website (I don't care much for the greenish color scheme), but then some features were changed (larger thumbs and stuff like that), and now this user style doesn't work anymore.

I really wish you would make the color scheme of the website adjustable.

SO, I know I don't have a premium account - but I cannot afford one, and I like to post artwork and talk to people about it and peruse message boards for tips! Something that has affected my experiences on dA are the high amount of sound advertisements that I cannot mute! I am listening to my own music and have to close dA more often than I would like because of obnoxious commercials. The ones I can mute don't bother me....

 "staff retreat!"

~yeah SOOOOOO glad to see that premium members get more notice then everyone else because they "keep the lights on at DA" but then there they are going on "staff retreats".... right.

and if i could script my page to have the OLD symboles next to usernames I would so i wouldnt have to look at these god awful new and ugly ones.

I've been having a problem ever since I started dA I think... when using it on my phone, it's a big hassle. It randomly jumps around a lot. The most annoying is when I go to reply to a comment in my inbox, it jumps down and cuts off the typing space for a second, goes down some more, then it hops all the way to the top left corner. Then when I scroll down, it hasn't even clicked in the box yet. When I do sometimes it glitches a bit, and while I type it can't seem to keep up, and as a result I can't see what I'm typing and then I gotta go back and fix a bunch of it lol. It doesn't sound to be bad but after six months of it doing this it's really starting to get on my nerves, especially when I have to quickly answer something and it keeps doing that. XD

Yes, I have the same problems. There also seems to be a bug with clicking the return button for me, it never works and it will only go back when I click 'all'. I think it's a bug for mobile devices.

Not sure if this is a glitch or just a really horrible but intentional feature, but the current comment system breaks traditional dA links.

<a wytiwyg="1" href="<a href=" http:="" letsplaylist.wikia.com="" wiki="" %22let%27s_play%22-friendly_developers_wiki#master_list"="">letsplaylist.wikia.com/wiki/%2…</a>">An example. It's annoying when "user-friendly" features make it more difficult to actually do stuff.

The link to Letsplaylist
I've used the same link with the A-tags. Still don't understand what's broken.
The code:

<a href="letsplaylist.wikia.com/wiki/%2…">The Link to Letsplaylist</a>

By the way, you still could use the HTML-mode in comments too. Just press the Ctrl+E.
