In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback.

Like last week's update, this week's Site Update is a little different from usual in that we don't have a publicly visible change log. However, it's for a good reason. Our Devious Technology team is currently at a staff retreat working on upcoming projects, such as...

Tags are the new Keywords

As deviantART grows and strives to create new ways to discover great content, we’ve found that keywords as we currently use them have become underutilized. We think we can do better -- and can make a better experience for the community -- by making some changes.

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us:
  • In response to the Discuss topic, generally deviants said they don't use social login options when the option is available, though some deviants said that they find it convenient depending on the website.
  • Some deviants mentioned that they might use social login options on deviantART provided they could continue to log in with username and password, while other deviants said they would choose not to use them.
  • Some commenters noted that they would like to use deviantART to log in to other apps, similar to how one can access SketchBook Pro or the Madefire Motion Book Tool with a deviantART account.
  • CrypticGrin suggested that some deviants would like to be able to easily share their artwork to their other social pages from the Submit page as they submit it to deviantART.

I honestly thought I'd be the only one who hates the new tagging-thing. But it seems I was wrong.

In other words; fuck the hash-tags, man, it makes the tagging so much more harder.

I know you guys are not going to delete it now, but can you at least make it so that it lets you use spaces in one tag? Would make a lot of people happy. Including me.

K' thanks bye.

As somewhat of a new Deviant member here, I prefer the old keyword system. This new tagging system has drastically changed in so many ways, in comparison to the old one. Firstly, I don't like the restriction of "no spaces" between the tags. As of now, it's really confusing how the tags are displayed, they're all cramped together and causes confusion. I understand how this new system works, for example what used to be the keyword "digital art" would now have to be the tag "#digitalart". It just doesn't fit with DeviantArt, I believe.

Another thing, discovering new art has now become far more difficult. I'm not sure whether to type into the search bar "my little pony" or "mylittlepony" or even "my_little_pony". And cause of this, people have confusion when searching and discovering art. This is kinda of a drawback for new artists who want a little exposure. I used to receive a decent number of views and maybe some faves in my drawings from random people who stumbled on my work while browsing. Now with this new tagging system, I noticed that my recent works are not receiving the same views or feedback I used to have with the old "keyword" system. I also don't get relevant art I try to search up when using the tags in the search bar. I even tried many tests with these tags, and could not find my work while searching for it. It's just too confusing for me, and I believe for other as well.

I really hope this doesn't get implemented permanently. Reading these other comments, I can tell people including myself, prefer the old "keyword" system over the "tags". Appreciate whoever took the time to read this large comment.

Please no more "improvements" and remove this please.
I totally dread what else may come from your retreat.

The new tagging feature is the single most annoying change I have ever seen on deviantART! This is not twitter or tumblr or facebook where people just tag a couple key words to reveal a deeper intent behind their post. I have nothing against being able to use hashtags but it's not something that should ever be mandatory! Hashtags simply do not suit this site.
I severely hope that this is something that will eventually be changed back...

Searching for artwork and tagging has been harder lately. I just prefer tumblr so much more now. Its like deviantart is trying to be a worse tumblr.

Not a fan of the new tagging system. Often feels like I'm 'over-tagging' something, because of all the variations/combinations of words I have to enter, just to feel like I'm categorizing my piece properly. Also, my browser memorizing multiple tags made it a lot easier when submitting something that fell under a similar category, but now it's just a hassle to upload and tag anything. Reverting to the old tagging system would be preferable.

New system for tags requires too many key strokes and there isn't any memory which was useful for similar postings.
I hate it.
Not all improvements are and this isn't an improvement.
I wish dA would remember where the money comes from..... us !
dA works for us, we are the boss and our likes and wants must be considered.

Honestly, if you guys are going to use this new tagging system, then I'll just stick to using tumblr. I have an art blog on there and the tags actually allow spaces in the tags. Until deviantart either allows spaces in the tags or changes the tagging system back to how it used to be, then I'll just be on tumblr because I don't want to use this dumb no-space tagging thing like instagram. The only reason why I'll be here is to do commissions and nothing else, my personal art won't be up so much so there'll be a lot less activity from me.
