In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

The New deviantART Comments

One of deviantART's strongest assets is the community's ability to bring self-expression into conversation, pushing the boundaries of creativity to a new level. We've improved creative communication by launching a new way to comment on deviantART, with access to formatting, emoticons, and, for Premium Members, the ability to include artwork and files in your comments.

Importing in deviantART muro

A new tool for importing images into deviantART muro has been launched!

When using deviantART muro, there is a new "Import" button located in the right column, beneath the opacity slider. When clicked, the sidebar will change and expand to match the style of Sta.sh Writer's sidebar. This change reinforces consistency between Sta.sh products, and also makes it easier for files to be imported with a single click, be it from your computer, your Sta.sh, or even from your deviantART Gallery!

Change Log

  • The one-month Premium Membership option can now be purchased with PayPal or deviantART Points. Added by sgrahamUK
  • Embedded DeviantArt muro Redraws would incorrectly link to Sta.sh items, resulting in an error. Fixed by inazar
  • Multiple error messages would display if an incorrect password was entered in the Shop checkout. Fixed by iconocrash
  • For a small number of Groups, the "Previous" and "Next" navigation buttons in the Gallery did not work properly. Fixed by muteor
  • There were some visual problems with email update notifications. Fixed by muteor
  • When sending a note to a Group, there were display issues with the "Send Note" button. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Thumbnails in More Like This results weren't respecting Mature Content or "Hide & require login to view" settings. Fixed by kemayo
  • For some Prints, sharing to Tumblr did not work properly. Fixed by iconocrash
  • When browsing and leaving a comment in Full View mode, the comment would appear twice after being posted. Fixed by fartprincess
  • Former Premium Members were unable to see when they last changed their username or when they could next change their username on the Settings page. Fixed by iconocrash
  • Premium Membership rebilling cancellation and updating notifications were visually improved. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • The dropdown menu in Sta.sh was obscured by thumbnails on the mobile website. Fixed by fartprincess
  • Comments hidden by a deviation's owner would have an incorrect background color. Fixed by helloandre
  • Internet Explorer 10 users would encounter script errors after authorizing the Sta.sh application. Fixed by shadowhand
  • There was an issue where ads would appear when editing a deviation. Fixed by drommk and  ZombieCoder
  • When viewing specific comments or replies, the title would not display correctly or link to the correct location. Fixed by iconocrash

Sta.sh / Submit

  • After merging items into a stack from the File menu, the resulting stack wouldn't be selected. Fixed by drommk
  • Deleting a Sta.sh item in Chrome could result in the wrong item being deleted. Fixed by drommk
  • Recently uploaded images would flash after uploading. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The changing display of multiple items in a stack when hovered over would not update after adding new items or merging that stack with something else. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When ctrl (command, for Mac) is held down, using the arrow keys will now select additional items instead of deselecting. Fixed by drommk
  • Dragging to select while near the edge of the page/window will now scroll the screen in that direction at regular intervals, selecting as it goes along. Fixed by drommk
  • Browser windows wouldn't scroll to newly selected items if using the left/right arrows to do so. Fixed by drommk
  • When submitting, if a deviant attempted to schedule a submission on the hour, they would encounter a "You cannot schedule items in the past" bug. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • HTML links couldn't use the "target" attribute. Fixed by kemayo
  • The Community Emoticons area of the Emoticons section of the sidebar were not limited to the Chat-Friendly Emotes category. Fixed by kemayo
  • Not all invalid attributes were being removed from pasted HTML, causing some display issues. Fixed by kemayo
  • When leaving comments using the Add Media button, older emoticons pasted into the comment would cause invalid markup when the comment was submitted. Fixed by kemayo
  • Resizing one's browser window while the Add Media toolbar was open wouldn't resize the comment box. Fixed by kemayo
  • Long words in comments were escaping the comment area. Fixed by kemayo
  • Deviations created in deviantART muro and drawn on from a Sta.sh Writer document could end up not being linked to properly when embedded. Fixed by kemayo
  • Thumb codes were briefly working in comments for non-Premium Members. Fixed by kemayo
  • Using the Link option in the toolbar to embed a deviation/image would make it appear as though it worked properly, but would not work upon submission. Fixed by inazar and kemayo
  • Some HTML markup was not working properly. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving comments in Sta.sh, the toolbar would prevent the "Previous" and "Next" buttons from working properly. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left:
  • Feedback in response to the Discuss topic varied. Several deviants mentioned that they felt their Favourites were both a place to collect things they like and showcase artwork, though other deviants felt that their Favourites were more for themselves.
  • Regarding easier methods of discovering art Favourited by deviants you watch, those who commented generally were opposed. Some deviants mentioned that if it were separate from the Message Center and respected one's Activity settings, they wouldn't be as opposed.
  • Deviants would like a word count tracker in Sta.sh Writer. Suggested by ohsparrowsong

Discuss!

Emoticons in Comments
The New deviantART Comments have brought emoticons and their usage to the forefront like never before. The "Emoticons" section of the Add Media sidebar enables all deviants to easily choose from official and/or community emoticons, allowing for even more expressive deviantART comments. Tell us about your emoticon commenting experience.  What have you found useful? What could still be improved?

When I search it's only letting me view the first page and then it says "end of results" and/or the other pages aren't loading. What's wrong?

I can't seem to submit my story using Sta.sh writer, but I can only submit it to my journal. Can you find a solution to this problem?

I'm not sure if I'm the only one that has this problem, but whenever I click Add a Drawing, the thing never loads. Heck, I even waited for more than an hour and the thing still hadn't loaded! So, is this something that everyone is experiencing or is it just me?

If it aint broke, don't fix it!
Really, there was nothing wrong with the way it was before, why change it?
I have experienced a bug with this new feature which I will report shortly.  (It has to do with the box deactivating if I try to click in it after opening it.)

I agree with the others here, bring back [link], it's nice n clean and if you hover over it you can see where it leads.

The previous method didn't take so much resources from my browser, I can clearly feel it slowing down when I open up a comment box and/or open the add media area. (My computer is old and slow, so it's quite noticeable. The comments is one of the reasons I love DA over other social websites, since it isn't as resource intensive, was always painless compared to sites like FB.)

If you know a bit of html you could show off. Not anymore.  :(

And I agree with what someone else said here, being able to add pictures to your posts is just going to cause problems, because let's face it, some people can't control themselves, which, if it isn't obvious enough, is going to push up load times.

On the plus side, I do like that the emotes dictionary comes up on the same page. But it takes up way too much space.

Oh and if I try to list things 1, 2, 3, etc below each other, it adds spacing inbetween the sentences the way it does in word processors. I hate that. Bring back simplicity. :)

Okay, I was willing to give the new comments a chance, but not anymore. Nobody has any need to add a bunch of large, complex files to a COMMENT. It's much easier to use links. All it does is crash the page, so nobody can even write a comment anymore! Now, I don't like being one of those people who constantly bitch and complain about updates, but these recent ones aren't making anything better!
Plus, not everyone can, or is even willing to download a million new browser versions just to go on deviantART. So, please, do polls or beta-test longer or just do something before bombarding us with these updates, because this is getting ridiculous.

Sta.shWriter has been giving me problems in posting my journals properly.  Whenever I press Enter to make space between areas, there's too much space.  It's almost as if it was intentionally being double-spaced, and I'm unable to fix it.  Is there a way to fix it so it's single-spaced?

Not sure if this is the right journal to comment on with this, but I'd really like the [link] to be back. It makes texts with references shorter and more transparent, and it's easy to notice the links. We were able to see the web address anyway by hovering the mouse over the [link].

I hope others want [link] back too :3

Like ~Microa1227 said,

I'm not sure if this is frequently happening to anybody else, or if its a glitch in the system or what - but whenever I'm writing comments the box doesn't expand if my comment goes further on.

I'm not exactly sure how to explain it but the box just doesn't expand - it allows me to continue writing but I can't see what I'm writing because it doesn't allow me to scroll down to see the text.

It's really a problema! If you cannot fix it, bring the older comments back!

Also, it's very ugly. Buttons are so big like if they were for a kids page. It's horrible!!!

I've been trying to organize my gallery, but as it turns out, the way deviantART is set up makes it impossible without having to delete and resubmit peices in my gallery. (Which I don't want to go through) It's also really annoying that instead of being able to remove the picture from one folder or the Featured part of my gallery to another folder or Sta.sh. It makes my gallery really unpleasent to look at because there's old crap everywhere, and moving it to yet another folder makes it harder to avoid my bad art! It's really inconvienent and if you were to create an option where you could move the file anywhere it would be awesome. Thanks!

Please, PLEASE, bring the Moods-icons back~

I really miss them! They were a part of dA and now there's nothing! -.-

Also, the new comment-system is not as good as is could have been, it's slower and doesn't always work....

Plus, I've tried to favorite several things, but I can't, because I receive an error: "Unable to +favorite - Uncaught Exception"
I've tried to refresh the page, but it doesn't work.
Don't mess with things that work. Comments are supposed to be fast, and filled with meaningful words!

Please considerate to make this "update" a feature one can CHOOSE to have, not to be FORCED to have. Thank you.

Is anyone else having problems uploading ANYTHING?

I tried uploading a new chibi and got this:
"Error uploading file: deviantART: 500 Internal Server Error"

Tried faving some pics and a lot of the time, I get this:
"Unable to +favourite - Uncaught Exception"

I couldn't even submit a new journal entry.

BUT, for some odd reason, I can still comment on things just fine.

DA, if you can, PLEASE FIX THOSE BUGS I mentioned.

There's one thing that bothers me though :( It's not a big deal or anything but I suggest that the journal entries should be separated from being a part of the Deviations count. I think the journal entries should have their own journal count separated from the Deviation count

Thank you

It sucks that we can no longer choose a mood to go alongside our comments. It was implemented so long ago that I barely remember.

I do like the fact we can search official and community emoticons in order to express ourselves without having to remember the names of them all,
but it is quite hard to refine the search when so many of the emoticons are not relevant.

For instance, I searched 'dragon', and found these at the top of the list;
Fun Fight :P
 :fruitpunch: IMing: Digital Piracy
OMG LOOK AT THAT

Now, would it not make more sense to have the most relevant emoticons at the top of the list?
Are the searches refined by the tags? Maybe the search can be sorted depending on the popularity of the emoticon regarding the tag searched.

IMO it might be a few steps for ward and a step back. I liked the ability to choose a emote that would be sort of the tone of your comment, having the little smiley displayed on the top right corner of the comment. Sure you can now quickly insert smileys and flair to your comments but there is still the problem with finding the emote you're looking for, unlike the old system where you could categorize it (i.e. 'Wow! > Astonishment > Bemused' is my favorite to use).
My opinion might be bias to my dislike of change to things 'not broken' but I'm sure someone out there may share this opinion.
It certainly won't stop me from using the emotes though!
La la la la

I think it is also the fault of the deviants who submitted the Emoticon, they might used keywords that don't fit to the Emoticon, to appear in the search results when you enter certain keywords.
May I ask which keywords you have used?

Did you know that you can use the search terms,  that you can find here:  FAQ #577: How do I use the Search?, in the Emoticon tab in add media?

for example if you want use an angry "normal" sized Emoticon type this in the search bar:  keywords:angry width:15  height:15   it searches for Emoticons with the size 15x15px and which have the word "angry" in the keywords.

These search functions are great, I didn't know about them. Still, it'd be better if they get integrated into a user-friendly "advanced search" option instead of having to type the search filters manually - that would also make more users aware of this enhanced functionality.
