In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Thumbnail Size Testing, Part 2 (Beta Testers)

In addition to the feedback we gathered from Beta Testers on the size testing tool, this week we're continuing our research by implementing a test that randomly assigns Beta Testers a different size for viewing thumbnails.

The New Sta.sh Comments

We've upgraded Sta.sh comments, allowing you to easily add formatting and media to comments. You can now pull in images to your comments and then draw on those images using deviantART muro! This new feature, powered by Sta.sh Writer, makes collaboration in Sta.sh even better!

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Several members mentioned that they don't change their page settings particularly often, though some mentioned that their deviantID or avatar may change based on mood or changes in the style of art they create.
  • Members would like to be able to sort stacks in their message center based on how many messages are in each stack. Suggested by GospodinP
  • Some deviants would like to be able to mark messages in their Message Center as read. Suggested by Jjaystar94
  • Deviants would like animation frame support for deviantART muro. Suggested by Krissi001
  • Some members would like to have an "Invite to Group" button on profiles, to make inviting deviants an easier process. Suggested by Sarah-BK

Discuss!

Commissions
Commissions are a common activity on deviantART where a client will pay an artist in exchange for creating a unique piece of artwork for them. We're curious about how you use or take commissions on deviantART. If you accept or purchase commissions, we'd love to hear from you.
  • For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
  • How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
  • How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
  • How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?

I like the new stash comments, it's really helpful for critique and red lining and such. I just wish the feature didn't activate every time I click to comment as it's cumbersome and unnecessary if I simply want to write. It would be more convenient if a button activated the feature.

I'd say adding a feature that when you search for something in the Forums, you can categorize the search results by newest to oldest.

How do you put a thumbnail of a picture at the top of your story that you submit to dA through stash writer? And I don't mean inside the actual story. I found a tutorial but it was out of date. I also know you can do so by clicking 'submit art' and going through the process there, but I'd rather have the ability to put a preview image on my story in writer so I don't have to mess around with the html codes and all that crap.

* For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
Now I'm very cheap, the price depends on the style and content: for now these are sketches, because I'm far too slow with full-detaled works, so it's like 65p for 1 dragon headshot without shading and up. Full detailed full body character without bg is 1000p for now(+ additional payment for markings, that depend on their complexity). But I'd rather prefer to earn like 150$ for the character (it's still not 5$ per hour, because one haracter takes me FAR longer than 10hours). But people are poor so it's nice to offer things thay can afford^^

* How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
I've just created my PayPal account... so I don't know yet. I I think sending DA points is easier for the commissioners (PayPal may be scary for those who've never used it before). But I'd like to get real money for my work... so it would be great if DA allowed to exchange points into money, not only vice-versa... I think that could encourage people to use points more frequently (e.g. more artists would accept point commissions - now the best artists never agree for points, because "they won't pay their bills"). You say points on DA are like € in EU, $ in USA, etc. so if € and $ can be transferred into each other, why points can;t be trandferred into $ or € etc.?
And I want to be pre-paid. I don't want to worry if the customer will or won't pay me later after I make all the job.

* How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
About 5 for sketch commissions (depends on if they are headshots or full bodies), and 1 for full detailed.

* How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?

Via comments(for ordering) and Note(for sending wips etc.)... if there only was a possibility to search notes via user:( (If e.g. a commissioner asked for a commission a few month ago. They haven't payed yet because we were still discussing the details so I could tell them the final price. Then they lose their access to internet e.g. it's broken down. Months pasts, I get many new notel all the time, and the correspondence sinks somewhere between page 10th and 90th... and now I can't find it! And I don't have time for digging) e.g. join.me if I need the customer to check the progress and make me more suggestions, or just to ask if I do well in the real time.

The new thumbnail size is best larger. I have also noticed this week that browsing on mobile site and go into pictures the picture on the clients site is way to small now on mobile and can't see the pic

I'm expensive by dA standards as I charge my professional fees, so I don't do much commission work through the site. I wouldn't take more than 3 at a time. My only way of receiving payment at present is via paypal. I prefer to communicate by email as files can be easily attached and sent back and forth.

It would be better if you supported colour management on the thumbnails. Many works look horrible as thumbs.

This all looks like good improvements, guys! I'm liking the idea of pulling an image into comments on st.ash. Not sure if I'd use it since I seldom receive/give comments in st.ash, but it sounds very useful in the example that you gave.

Now for commissions. Not sure what you guys have cooking back there, but its intreguing to see you interested in this aspect of DA. I don't recall you guys ever addressing this topic before. Cool!

•For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
My prices vary, depending on medium and complexity of work, anywhere from a $10 portrait pencil sketch to a $500 full-colour digital lineart piece. For full-colour without lines, I can't really give an overall estimate without first discussing the project in detail because there are too many variables, but my minimum is $300.

•How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
I receive payment via Pay-Pal only and usually collect the first half upfront before I even begin thinking about the project and then collect the last half after I'm ready to send the final product. I prefer paying for commissions that way, too, but will work with whatever the artist wants.

•How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
When I advertise for commissions, I usually open three or five slots. But I won't turn down a commission just because my slots are full.

•How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?
I've used all three methods and don't mind using any of them. Usually I work with whatever the client wants. Each method has its own pros and cons. I even used Skype on one occasion. Whatever it takes to communicate!

For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
My prices are all pick-a-price. I go by whatever my buyer feels they can afford or what they feel what I'm selling is worth. ^^

How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
In DA :points:. I won't upload the piece until I get whatever points the buyer owes me, and they can send me the amount whenever they're ready, preferrably ASAP.

How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
However many my message center is able to hold. I keep any comments/replies about commissions there until the final product is uploaded to remind myself and push myself to do it.

How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?
However my buyer feels comfortable talking to me with. Though I usually like for the messages to be left on my Tumblr or DeviantART, as I don't check messages for anything/anywhere else.

there are still a lot of bugs in Stash that need to be adressed.

Also the Stash writer is quite terrible to work with. I constantly get errors that 'someone else has edited my draft' which is obviously not the case.
Also as soon as the text gets a bit long there are other errors saying I'm going over the 64kb limit.
Saving freezes often and there are many errors in the layout, fonts and font sizes when importing from Word documents

I think I'm having the same problem now. I didn't think of the size limit of the text file, but I think I'm damn near 64kb and it's acting up. I'm even seeing the "someone else" part reflected in my views, though I think that's maybe just my login session lapsing or something like that.

For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
I don't set prices by what I create because it will always vary. Instead I have a starting price and whether it stays like that or goes up all depends on how much work I put into it, how many details are added and how hard it is to find the stock for the specific piece.

How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
Through Paypal

How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
I never really had a problem with being commissioned a lot all at once. So far people have commissioned me at different times so I never dealt with any slots.

How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?
Depends on the account (Deviantart/Model Mayhem/etc.) Sometimes by e-mail but primarily through messages on the account I'm commissioned at.

The new features for Sta.sh comments are great! ^^
And, about the previous feedback, I too think that having a "Invite to Group" button on profiles would be really useful. :)

That said, I both accept commissions and commission people, so here you are my replies:
- my prices vary a lot since I accept many types of commissions in different media and styles;
- PayPal and MoneyGram;
- usually around ten, more right now since I'm accepting extra points commissions (only for a limited time);
- deviantArt notes are preferred, but I use e-mails, too.

Thumbnails: I don't know what's going on but when I am going to view comments on particular pieces of work the pictures are automatically HUGE. I have to click on them to make them smaller. It's taking very very long to load this way. It was the other way around before. Small, click to make larger.

Commissions: I take commissions. I usually have a list in a journal that I update when people commission me. I require payment up front and I change the status from PENDING to PAID to COMPLETE to SHIPPED. I also take commissions on Etsy and create listings for people who would like to use Credit Card without using PayPal. My stuff isn't digital, it's crafts. I open 20 a time and tell them to keep checking the journal. I update PayPal or Etsy when the item has shipped with a tracking number. I never take points because my items are physical merchandise and I need cash to mail them and gather supplies.

Inviting a certain person/people to a group already has a button "Invite friends", but if the founder did not allow members to invite people and your a member, you cannot use that option.

But you can send them to the group page by typing : icongroupname : or sending them a link to it. c:

Can we possibly get an alert sound/tab alert when someone mentions your name in a chatroom? The highlighting effect is nice and all, but its useless when on another tab. Additionally, can we get more ways to organize gallery/favorite deviations? A-Z order and reverse would be appreciated.

This is going to sound incredibly stupid, but I need some help concerning Sta.sh writer.

So... I wrote half of a piece on there, then I saved it, left it for a while, then went back to it and completed it, and then went and uploaded. Well... I just went on my Sta.sh, and the thing that I wrote wasn't there. I was just wondering... if something gets uploaded to dA from Sta.sh, does it get deleted, or.... is something else going on with that?

Again, I'm sorry for my stupidity, but... I hoped that Sta.sh would keep my stuff saved. Just in case I forgot my dA password, and so that I had somewhere else where bits were saved, over than on my laptop, which isn't very safe.
