In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Update to the Twitter Widget

The Twitter widget for Profile Pages has been given a small update to better match Twitter's branding. It also allows the widget to tell you how many followers a user has on Twitter at a glance.

Upgrade to Premium Membership to install the Twitter widget!

Commission Ratings Coming Soon

In the near future, we are planning to implement ratings for Commissions, so that buyers can leave feedback regarding the artist's performance on a completed Commission. In addition to the Commissions Portal, which we are still building and improving on, Commission Ratings will make it even easier for buyers to find hardworking, high-quality artists, and for artists to promote themselves.

Promoted Deviations and Journals

Promoted deviations and journals are pieces of media selected by and sent from deviantART that we believe you should know about. They represent deviations and journals we believe are of significant importance -- so much so that we want them to have a greater reach within the deviantART network. They appear and act just like any other deviation or journal in your Message Center, with the exception that they're clearly marked as Promoted. As with all deviations and journals, they can be commented on, favorited, shared, and more.

Change Log

  • Deviation pages would not always open in Internet Explorer. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Menus on the mobile website were not working. Fixed by inazar and shadowhand
  • Improvements were made to the sorting of the Friends List. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Deviations could show up in the "More from this artist" section on their own deviation page. Fixed by helloandre
  • When deleting stored deviations using the Opera browser, all modal buttons displayed as "Adjust Image". Fixed by adahacker
  • Premium Membership rebilling would result in an additional "Gift" email being sent. Fixed by yury-n
  • The "Follow us on Tumblr" link in the footer would erroneously open in a Share sized popup window. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Items in the header were not correctly aligned on the mobile website. Fixed by helloandre
  • Very long descriptions on Gallery pages did not adjust page layout gracefully. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Click to view DeviantArt muro drawings in comments would only work for the first image. Fixed by inazar
  • There were some overlap issues between comment replies and header menus. Fixed by inazar
  • Various fixes were made to the Sta.sh API. Fixed by muteor
  • The "View Original" and "Product Preview" buttons did not work when viewing Prints on deviations page. Fixed by helloandre
  • The wording for the 5,000 Watch limit warning messages was unclear. Fixed by helloandre

Sta.sh / Submit

  • When opening an item from a stack, it would be impossible to navigate to the second page of comments. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Uploading non-image items would result in a broken thumbnail until the page was refreshed. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When returning to a deviation page after editing that deviation, modals would be incorrectly styled. Fixed by kouiskas
  • On touch devices, the "Enter text" and "Select File from Sta.sh" links were hidden behind the upload button. Fixed by muteor
  • Uploading non-image items as Premium Content would result in thumbnails being stuck on "stashing". Fixed by kouiskas
  • Various bugs related to Multi-Submit and Scheduled Submit have been fixed. Fixed by kouiskas and drommk

Sta.sh Writer

  • If someone drew on an image in deviantART muro that had been linked to and resized in a Sta.sh Writer document, the resizing would be lost. Fixed by kemayo
  • Clicking on stacks in the Writer sidebar could cause display problems. Fixed by inazar
  • Search boxes in the sidebar were not consistently aligned. Fixed by inazar
  • Some sections of the sidebar had a large blank space at the bottom in Firefox. Fixed by Alisey
  • The friends list in the deviantART section of the sidebar would cut off before showing all friends. Fixed by Alisey
  • Multiple links that were included right next to one another were being mangled down into a single link in Webkit browsers. Fixed by Alisey
  • Editing Journal Skins on the Write a Journal Entry page was broken for Beta Testers. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were positive about Multi-Submit and Scheduled Submit.
  • Feedback regarding the discuss topic varied. Having rich-text formatting and the emoticon sidebar in comments were both well-received, though some deviants who mentioned thumbnails or full-sized images being included in comments were opposed to their inclusion, or else their inclusion without a limit.

Discuss!

Sharing Deviations
When you find artwork that you think a friend would like to see, how do you typically choose to share it with them? Do you use the "Share" feature to send them a Note? Do you manually send them a Note with a link or thumbnail in it? Do you share it with them via chat, email, or instant messaging? What other methods do you use?

:icondeviantartsecret: They are now claiming they help people and that most work is not art, but this help occurs outside DeviantArt and then is brought in. The owner of the group claims copyright control over all the secrets, and many are incredibly disturbing. Those holding the secrets email the DAS team, confess in the email and falsely believe their identities are safe. Some messages sound like self-harm or suicidal, and a hotline should be contacted, but DAS states nowhere that this is done. Yet they claim they help these people.

And this group encourages such behavior from unsuspecting children and the mentally disturbed on your own website. It could turn into a legal issue that would have self-help groups and psychiatrists in an uproar if you don't act soon. From a legal standpoint, I feel you should investigate what's going on and see if these people are qualified to take in self-harm, suicidal and other cries for help and post them on DA as anonymous hit count fodder.

Take care of it before a news site gets wind of this questionable tie to Deviant Art or before one of these anonymous emailers hurts themselves or someone else, and it's found out that they confessed thinking about it here first. I don't want this site to go down because of legal fees. Moreover, I don't want people to be hurt because REAL help was never suggested!

A minor secondary incentive is that none of their submissions are art. DAS has stated this. That is minor, however, in comparison to the real issue here: If they are not qualified to help the mentally troubled, then why does DA permit this activity to continue?

I've never heard of this group until recently...it's hard to believe it's been here 7 years and I never noticed it.

If the owner of the group is not copying the secrets ( email stories ) word for word, but rather, putting them in their own words, then they would, in fact, have copyright to the new version. I guess it all comes down to whether or not someone who submitted a secret knows for sure if they are indeed, rewriting it, or just copying and posting it. As well, I think it's safe to assume that anyone who submits a secret to that group is giving them permission to post it, otherwise, they'd have no reason to send them an email with their secret.

I can't say anything regarding how the group functions, as I don't know much about it, but just to be safe, it wouldn't hurt for DA staff to review the group to make sure no harm is being done.

I will say this in the best possible way, because it is not my intent to harm any particular peoples emotions or thoughts. However, there is a large group of people, up and coming, who are very much so against :icondeviantartsecret:
When the group first started I believed it was a great thing, people telling someone something that they had a hard time admitting. And I will agree that most of their firsts works were indeed very artistic. But lately the level or ART they require has diminished. I'm not saying I want the account to be deactivated, because I do agree it is helpful to a lot of people, but they need to be more selective about entries, about what they choose to consider a secret. They aren't even following the exact description of the word secret anymore.

They need to stop with little editing and typos, not to mention misspellings. If they want to get their point across they really need to work on the message they send by fixing their incorrect sentence structure, and very easily noticed grammatical errors.

Again, I cannot stress enough how much I do not want to offend anyone in the group,. I am simply trying to raise a serious issue to their attention.

Do something about :icondeviantartsecret:. It's getting out of control, and definitely not in keeping with the values of this website. You need to fix that category (why they have their own is seriously beyond us) which they have. People are unhappy that they are seeing stupid chunks of inartistic text on the front page.

I see this Commission Ratings thing turning into bit of a dobele edged sowed as anyone with a low rating is'nt going to get any commissions and people who do an exalent job and are well known are going to become even MORE popular

that sead it is logical for that fecere to be implemented, thoth hopefully it will be an opsanol thing people can turn off if they want

to share a deviation, I usually do everything manually. Now it would be pretty cool if we could post to a person's profile, or have a micro-twitter like platform where messages are sent and received.

Ok yea, I know you guys don't listen to our comments here, but I need to voice my opinion along with everyone else.

MORE LIKE THIS SUCKS

People have already voiced valid opinions against it in organized lists that amount to more than "this feature sucks". For an art website that promotes artists, you've done an amazing job of disrespecting artists, and now I've noticed it for myself.

First and formost, the MLT feature is MASSIVE. It takes up the entire height of my screen. You NEVER see the "More from the Artist" section unless you scroll down looking for it. It's just... I dunno, a bit excessive :/ it was better when it was only like 3 or 4 rows high as opposed to now 5 that occupies my entire monitor.

Secondly, the results NEVER match unless you're looking for stock images. Now, this didn't used to bother me so much, until I started to notice that the MLT next to my deviation with my commission prices was showing my REALLY old artwork. Stuff that is buried in my scraps because they were commissions and i couldn't delete them from my gallery, but that I was ashamed had ever been drawn. Not that you guys mind much; with that price sheet you aren't getting a (ridiculous) 30% cut of the action.. ANYWAY I recently uploaded a Pokemon themed team portrait that I drew to the Fan Art > Games category. It would make sense that Pokemon would show up in the MLT then, but what do I get? Sonic? And not just decent Sonic fan art that I can appreciate for their artistic merits. The sh**y MSPaint OC kind.. HOW?! HOW ARE MSPAINT CIRCLE TOOL PAINT BUCKET PREGNANT HEDGEHOGS RELATED TO POKEMON?!

Please. Do something about this monstrosity of a disease you have unleased on your pitiful website. You probably won't even read this, so I'm issuing a challenge to you. Respond to this message. I'd honestly be satiated if you'd give me a response, even if it's a "you're being a whiny b***h; go back to drawing" kind of response. I want PROOF that you guys are listening to us. Reading these comments. Even if you aren't going to change anything. I want to see that you ARE reading these comments. Because right now, it looks like you guys are ignoring us and going about your business, and that looks bad on you.

Ive had many complaints about many things here that have gone unanswered aswell. dA outgrew it's moderators ability to keep it in check right from the start. And it's always been that way, It re doubles its user base every two years. However they do read some of these messages, but have never really responded to them as far back as I can recall. they will only respond to the masses. And right now novice artists are crying the loudest because their work goes un-noticed in terms of views and fav's ("Earn it!" -I always say). MLT was clearly made for this reason, to get common art with near equal views and fav' out in the lime light, so others get noticed besides the most popular. You'll notice the art changes in MLT the more views and fav's you get. The problem is that many artists falsely label their tags to get more views, for instance: calling Sonic a Pokemon, that's not dA's fault, that's the artists false tags affecting the result among other factors.
The solution I've found most helpful is to just voice your objections as they surface to add your voice to the course, then just move on, taking the good with the bad. Because nothing in dA gets removed until it falls out of use. And MLT is just too popular a function so it will sooner see more upgrades than anything else I'd expect. This is how dA has always been, popularity rules. And it's the root of half the complaints. I've learned through many trials here that ignorance is bliss and popularity isn't worth it's weight. Now I typically just hang ten and go with the flow.

I've honestly been going with the flow as well. Because I'm a premium member already, most of the features either don't affect me, or I have the option to not partake. I've even stopped complaining about the submit page, despite how much it hurts my eyes to use it (color sensitivity, yay...). The MLT feature didn't even bother me that much, not until I noticed that the stuff being shown was my old, shitty artwork that I'd rather -not- show up next to examples of artwork I'm trying to sell.

I guess I have no choice but to go with the flow, though, because dA couldn't give less of a shit about their users.

I agree, 11 years an several profiles later, I'm back where I started and dA's not changed one bit in terms of service. Its like a day hasnt passed since I began this profile. They still don't answer questions to effect much of a solution with their help desk, and they still don't reply to comments in their site updates. Infact theyre worse now, and it seems more people are unhappy. The best thing to do is wait for them to do a servey. Their surveys are long and full of repetitious questions, but theirs usually a segment to voice an opinion to the person directly effecting major changes. Keep your answer short and sweet and you'll be heard (if only for a moment.) So if you see a survey, complete it, and you'll get your chance to speak to some effect.

If I want to share some art I do a feature once a month in my journal.

Btw I had some Group oriented ideas for those that spend the money to get Super group.

Here they are:

:bulletblue: In every group you can only send out 25 invites. That's fine for non-super groups. But I think if we spend money to upgrade we should be able to invite twice as many people to our group. So we would be able to send out 50 invites. The reason is I send out invites all the time. This feature would make me think about getting another year membership for my group.

:bulletblue: Another thin I thought of is a calendar to keep organized. In the apps section where they have home, journals, gallery and so on. We should have a calendar to put up events. Such as when contest start and end. It would help out a lot and show how active a group is.

I am chalk full of ideas.

Don't really care for the Promoted Deviations to be honest.

The ratings system however...seriously, if someone has a problem with a commission, they tell it to the one selling said commission. No ratings are necessary. :/

As an Ask account that thrives based on user interaction, I find the forcing of "promoted deviations" down our throats to be akin to force-feeding ice cream to a lactose intolerant person. It can be hard enough for Ask accounts to promote our own stuff among the small communities of fans we frequent, without having to compete for attention from other art types (which to some extent we already are competing). There can be times of "drought" where no one asks us anything for weeks on end. Then you (DA staff) just add a feature that shoves random pieces of art (chosen by you guys no less!) in the faces of everyone on DA.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt you will wield such power for the true benefit of all. If you truly meant for people to benefit from this, then I expect to see one new Ask get a deviation featured in this new Promoted feature each day. I am skeptical that will actually happen.

I would love to see you prove me wrong.

O.k. The thing I find is that the whole Promoted thing is gonna be nothing more than an irritation to me, I honestly have no use for it and it's gonna do nothing more than make my already cluttered message board be even more filled with junk I may not even care to see. To make matters worse, since I'm not a premium member, I can't opt out of this rather useless message board clogging program...
Also... Not too many websites I visit use the rating system so why are you issuing it now? I don't know about everyone else but I personally have no use for such a rating system.
All in all, I see this as being rather counterproductive, as we already have alternatives that are much better than what is being presented to us.

I don't like you guys focusing so much on incorporating tumblr and twitter and facebook into deviantart. isn't it supposed to be it's own site? notably, a social network for artists?

Also, please focus on working out highly requested fixes and features from the deviants, rather than incorporating new ones no one asked for. You're giving us a stacked deck by only ever asking us our opinions on your new ideas, instead of asking us what we think should be worked on on the site as a whole.

And the promoted things is really friggin dumb. You already have ads for non-premium members, why do you need to add spam from likely irrelevant artists? I understand the ads; that brings revenue to keep the site going; what the fudge do the promoted deviations and journals bring!?

Promoted deviations

This is something I'm not happy about, because I seriously doubt anything that will appear there will be of any interest to me. Now I have premium and can disable it (for now; changes in the last 9 months have me seriously reconsidering renewal), but I can still be concerned for like-minded non-premium users.

So long as 'promoted' (and by this I expect it follows the Twitter model and involves deviantArt getting paid) deviations are not that regular it won't be too invasive, but if they do start happening more often I wonder if it might cause a backlash in the comments of promoted works.

Commission ratings

I can easily see going the way of eBay or phone apps. Commissioners will usually give 5 stars to keep their favourite artists happy, and artists will expect 5 stars all the time. If an artist ever gets rated fairly (such as being given 4 stars for a piece not worth 5), it'll be hugely damaging to their record to the point where some would probably disable or hide their commission widget making it even less usable than it already is thanks to the huge cut dA takes.

I don't have any plans to offer commissions so I won't have to suffer an artist's side of this, but this will make me wary of making commissions from anyone who uses the widget, because I never want to go through the dilemma of having to choose between screwing an artist over by rating fairly, or lying and giving an undeserved 5 stars.

Feedback / suggestion

Can we finally get an overhaul of the notes system? Between the single message list and the list of folders that requires epic scrolling when you have 30+ of them, notes currently resemble where emails were around 1998.

I'm sure many people would agree with a need for basic "2013" features like the 'conversation' format and automatic sorting.
