In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Updates to the Twitter Widget

Due to Twitter's updated API and the removal of their first API, which was the original foundation for deviantART's Twitter Widget, the Twitter Widget for Profile Pages has been updated to match Twitter branding. The widget now displays retweets with the icon of the person you've retweeted, and images can be shown in-line, so that deviants don't have to click through to see images you're sharing.

To install the Twitter widget, upgrade to Premium Membership!

Please note: The display setting for @replies is not currently working properly.  This is a known issue that will be fixed shortly, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Change Log

  • Users could not login for a few hours on Sunday. Fixed by chris
  • In rare cases, Journal URLs would contain /art/ rather than /journal/. Fixed by shadowhand
  • On the "Earnings" page, multiple items were sometimes present in a single transaction. Fixed by yury-n
  • When a deviation was deleted, the Print page for that deviation was still visible. Fixed by randomduck
  • When browsing categories with no subcategories, the page title and meta information were incorrect. Fixed by DEVlANT

DeviantArt muro

  • There was an error that would occur when using the "Edit in deviantART muro" button on Sta.sh items.  Fixed by mudimba
  • Browsing categories on deviantART with a large number of deviations created in deviantART muro could lead to errors. Fixed by inazar and sgrahamUK

Sta.sh / Submit

  • Deviants can now browse their Sta.sh items using the same "Previous" and "Next" navigation buttons as on deviantART. Added by drommk
  • Scheduled Submit was unable to set a deviation as exclusive to a Group. Fixed by drommk
  • When refreshing the page of an item in a stack, clicking the browser's back button would not correctly redirect you to the parent page. Fixed by drommk

Sta.sh Writer

  • Using the "Edit with deviantART muro" option when writing a Journal would produce an image that displayed like a full size deviation until you submitted your content, at which time it would become a thumbnail. Fixed by kemayo
  • When using deviantART muro to draw on an image included in a Journal, the status notifications were too narrow and looked broken. Fixed by kemayo
  • Submitting a Journal while it was trying to load an embedded deviation could result in that deviation disappearing from the document. Fixed by kemayo and Alisey
  • Internet Explorer 8 was having problems stripping unsafe attributes from pasted content. Fixed by inazar
  • The 'name' attribute was being removed from HTML links. Fixed by Alisey
  • Polish characters were impossible to insert. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thank you for your feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Feedback regarding Sta.sh Writer in comments varied. Deviants were pleased to have the formatting tools and easier access to emoticons, though some mentioned concerns about spamming.
  • Some deviants said that they want the option to enable or disable sharing thumbnails on their deviations and Profile. This is something we are currently working on, and will add prior to a full launch.
  • Some users mentioned encountering issues with Sta.sh Writer and comments on mobile devices, and it has since been disabled on mobile devices.
  • Deviants would like to add Undiscovered and What's Hot to their Channels. Suggested by rosaarvensis
  • Responses to the Discuss topic ranged, though the majority of responses focused on advice for the artists. Those who responded encouraged artists to take their prices into consideration and not to undervalue themselves, as well as to be consistently in communication with the buyer, and prompt in delivery of the art. Another common point was to be careful not to take on too much work at once. iLantiis mentioned that both buyer and artist alike should be as specific as possible, both in what they want the art to be and what the art is to be used for.

Discuss!

Images in the Twitter Widget
As mentioned earlier in this Site Update, the Twitter Widget will now display images linked on your Twitter account. What are your thoughts on this? Do you like that it displays images you've shared on Twitter, or would you prefer a more compact display without images?

The images on the front page are huge now. I think it makes it harder for me to search through new images. And it takes longer to load. Is this a feature? Is there a way to turn this off and get smaller thumb nail sizes?

well what I was hoping as a request is that, for the Polls module, can you (as the one who asks the question in which everyone has to answer) just find a way to just let the admin of the profile check the results of the polls without having to just vote on your on poll? thank you.

I didn't know that you could edit a Journal once you submitted it or update it or even have some body else help update it. The reason that I am interested is that I submitted a Journal yesterday that I should do a little clean up on. It not too bad, but it could use some work on it.

When found the place to make a Journal entry, I was kind of tapping around on the computer, spur of the moment kind of thing. I took me about two hour type it in and enter my Journal.

It listed as the "Captain of Dream World Complaints Department"

Any suggestion that you could make or suggestion for future thing and resources to do something more than just Journals, would be appreciated.

hi. I just noticed that on one of my stories, I notice I spelt a word wrong. So I went to edit the mistake but on the edit page, The top bit had been cut but I could go on the rest of the page except for the top part (which had the bit to edit the mistakes so I couldn't do it)

It was the same when I went to my gallery, the top part was cut but the top started with my lastest 2 submissions but cut in half.

I wasn't sure if this was just my laptop being stupid or if this was a bug. need help plz.

Out of curiosity, at one point I was able to edit the journals written by other members of the groups I administrate. Seemingly after stash journals were introduced, I no longer have this privledge, even though I have full permissions in both groups AND said journals were set so that 'anyone may edit'.

Should I report this as a bug? Or is this something that's supposed to happen?

I don't know if anyone else has been having this problem, but...

When I acess deviantART on a desktop computer, it has recently been logging me out and making me log back in everytime the page refreshes or I navagate to a new page. But when I acess deviantART on my Kindle Fire, it works completely fine. Is there a solution to this, or is it just a bug?

Thanks,
Pig

I think I prefer the twitter widget to be the old 'text only' version, since as it is right now seems to take an awful lot of space on my page plus fewer messages, compared to more tweets displayed on the text-only version. ^^; (I know I can change how many tweets to display but if I choose any more than 5 it looks really really huge and ugly..) Although I do like the reply, retweet, fav buttons being there! :D

Search is slowly becoming unusable, thanks to the one-two punch of it "guessing" that maybe you mean slight variations of the word you actually search for... different tenses, etc, which is a pain in the ass when you're searching for fanart for a show that is a common word with "ed" or "s" on the end that makes it less common... but that could be tolerable if not for...

Including journal entries, fic, etc, in default search. Now whenever I search for something, it feels like 60% of what I see is spam to download ebooks (full of walls of text to make sure it shows up on enough search terms as possible) from some site or the other, 20% is surveys, memes, and other random mentions of the term, and only a small fraction is actual art. For some search terms, it gets as low as 5% actual art.

I use deviantart to search for ART that I like and ARTISTs that I like. I can deal with fanfics showing up in the searches, even though I don't read them, because at least that's art, but ads for pirates ebooks and random musings by people is not what I'm after, and when it crowds out what I am after, it's a problem. I don't think there's anything wrong with ALLOWING you to search these things, but make it so you have to specifically click them.

PLEASE either change the default behavior, or include some "exclude text-based submissions" thing to settings.

I JUST REMEMBERED MY IDEA!!!!

Okay so art theft is obviously something people worry about a lot.
Google has it's "search via image" feature now. So I was thinking what if there was an option where you could search dA or the web for images in your gallery to see if they've been used somewhere else- without having to do each one individually on Google.

That way people could just run a search and maybe even have it run in the background whilst they do other things?

geebuz, FB can be really handy, so as Twitter.

They are pretty cool tools to connect and stay in contact with other artists and friends, share your thoughts and art with. It's not like you're forced to post CRAP there.

When you're smart, and when your friends are smart, they won't spread any scam or spam on their pages. Of course, such stuff can be easily done by accident or by bots and what not. It' important to keep your sanity when using those sites. Don't click around there too much, try to set your privacy options to a maximum and so on.
Of course, errors, mistakes and so on appear. We all make mistakes and do stupid things sometimes, but this is just in our nature. People are stupid sometimes.
When you friends accidentally share spam or scam- just keep calm, don't click it, report it, and tell them nicely about what happened and educate them how they can protect themselves next time.
We all need to learn this and since the internet constantly changes, we never stop learning.
This can be fun, or pretty dangerous to our privacy, copyrighted material and so on, so it takes courage and all that. It's okay if you don't like that. I didn't like it until two years ago neither and I'm really on the zero attention side of blogging and tweeting, but it's fun sometimes. If you ever feel like doing experiments with new stuff on the internet, why not try creating a profile with a somewhat change d nickname so nobody recognizes you 'n stuff? I'm really not saying I would be internet safe in a way of 100%, but I try my best. No awkward party images, no spreading spam and scam links 'n stuff.

Personal side note: if I had FB somewhat earlier in 2010, while I was on travelling ireland in summer 2010, I would be still able to poke some really nice people over there from time to time, asking how they are 'n stuff. Unfortunately I didn't had a FB account back then, so they didn't even try to give me their facebook names, since I declined every attempt of them getting me into that social media stuff... and so there are really nice people I'll probably never meet again out there. :/

Really. It can be useful. If you don't use it for shit like broadcasting you just had a cup of coffee 'n stuff. You know.

Along side of what has been said now, one should consider the dark side of FB. According to statistics and reports, FB has destroyed families. In Britain, 30% of divorce cases are now caused by FB. Children become obsessive with pornography. Men trick young girls, and, as a result, they fall victims to blackmailing. FB has caused some to commit suicide, and so forth. All this have been documented.

However, technology moves on, and soon a new technology will be created to replace FB. One thing I often hear from my friends: guess what! I am getting bored with FB!

I know this network is not a self- operating machine. Therefore, when submission of art goes to moderation, I feel favoritism is being practiced. I believe premium members should be treated equally without bias..

I say this because some works seem to stay glued up on the public page for many long hours during the day, as if it is an invitation for every one pay homage and appreciation to these selected works.

For example, shop by feigiap stayed most of the day glued up on the very top of the public page last week. At the same time I searched for my newly submitted piece, I could not find it at all on the public page nor I could find it on sub-category. If my observation is wrong, please correct me on this. Cheers!

One thing I would really like to see implemented is the option to select which deviations show up in the "more from this artist" section of deviation pages, or at least be able to only show works from certain folders. I have a tendency to upload a variety of different things at random times (drawings, stamps, crafts, etc), and it looks really weird having all these nice drawings displayed there with a random stamp sandwiched right in between them. ._. I would much rather have just the drawings show up in that section rather than having them interrupted by all these other things. (I've actually had to move a few deviations to my scraps and storage simply because I'm so sick of seeing them pop up there). And I know a few other people who have older works that they don't want to have shown in that section, but don't want to move them to their scraps or storage, either.

Also, this is an older visual suggestion that I made a couple of years ago, but I would still really like to see happen: [link] Since mature works are given different rating options ("moderate" or "strict"), I would really like it if we had the option to select the level of maturity we want to browse. For example, I'm fine with nudity and very slight sexual themes, but I would prefer not to see a couple of naked people crawling all over each other in bed doing super hard-core sexy stuff. It would also be nice to be able to filter the types of mature works we want to see- for example, someone might be okay with nudity, but not want to see gore.

More from this artist sure can be pretty faulty sometimes. For examples, sometimes I upload a colorful, detailed drawing that took me days to finish, and then I go see the "MFTA", and instead of displaying more colorful drawings they just show really old stuff that its not even colored.
And I too wish they would update and change a few things on the mature filter, so I could block only certains kinds of mature content (in my case, I would want to let it show blood/gore normally, but not nudity)

"Some deviants said that they want the option to enable or disable sharing thumbnails on their deviations and Profile. This is something we are currently working on, and will add prior to a full launch."

So does this mean you are working on being able to disable "More Like This"?
Because if it means that I would be a very happy camper.

If it doesn't than I am still requesting the ability to disable "More Like This" for premium members. It is overwhelming to the deviation being visited and obnoxious.
Thanks
Moira

I think it's time to put something more site related in the DISCUSS section of these journals.

How about Collections or Deviation sets/series:

- For instance, as suggested by me
- Or as suggested by Mystrii
- Maybe this suggestion by Acorntail will inform you some more
- And this visual representation by lost-angle shows how it will look

Since this is a common suggestion I think it is a perfect subject for discussion.
