In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Uplifting the Profile Tabs (Beta Testers)

As part of an initiative to make deviantART more user-friendly and clearer to new users, tabs on the Profile Page have received a visual and functional uplift! The tabs on Profile Pages (Gallery, Prints, Favourites, and Journal) have been visually improved for consistency, cleanliness, and a more modern appearance. Navigation elements have been moved to the left column of the page, and the placement of major elements of each tab have been aligned so that the transition from one tab of one's Profile to another is more smooth, natural, and clean.

Change Log

  • Ads on deviation pages were misbehaving and appearing outside of their proper locations in some situations. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Creating a new Group Gallery Folder and immediately navigating to that folder would result in an error. Fixed by helloandre
  • Double clicking on the 'Purchase' button on the Premium Content modal would result in a double purchase. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The Help Desk's contact form would not notify a deviant if they were using an unsupported browser. Fixed by fartprincess
  • The "Watches you" badge would appear when browsing by Artists on More Like This results. Fixed by helloandre
  • The .ASL filetype could not be uploaded to the Photoshop Actions category. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • There were some display issues with Critiques in the Message Center. Fixed by fartprincess
  • On certain pages around the site, middle-clicking on a thumbnail would open the deviation in the same tab, rather than in a new one. Fixed by helloandre
  • Previewing replies to several comments in the Message Center and then replying to one would trigger a comment submission error. Fixed by fartprincess
  • Links to some categories resulted in 404 errors for a brief period. Fixed by helloandre
  • For a brief period, some Profile Pages containing the Critique widget were broken. Fixed by fartprincess
  • For deviants who changed their username, the old username would not redirect to their Profile properly. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Links to the Super Group upgrade page, the Contest gallery, and the Film gallery would trigger an error for a brief period. Fixed by helloandre

Sta.sh / Submit

  • When uploading film, the rotating image at the center of the "processing film" icon would rotate off-center under certain circumstances. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When viewing stacks, the drop zones to move thumbnails is much bigger than before, for easier dragging and dropping. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When dragging a thumbnail to the beginning or the end of a stack or your main Sta.sh area, the drop zone is now much bigger than before, for easier item placement. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The image on stacks would continue to change even when the stack was being dragged. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The "No Preview" image was styled incorrectly on the Submit page. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Stacks created by merging a selection could not be selected as a place to drop files. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • Trying to post two comments in a row on a deviant's Profile wouldn't work. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving a comment, the page would not automatically scroll to view the newly-posted comment. Fixed by inazar
  • When previewing text in Internet Explorer, paragraphs would have incorrect margins. Fixed by inazar
  • Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported when posting comments or Journals. Internet Explorer 8 users will see the old comment box display and Write a Journal entry page. Fixed by kemayo
  • Image thumbnails were briefly working in signatures. Fixed by inazar
  • After clicking "Submit Comment", one could click back into the comment box. Fixed by kemayo

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • In response to the Earnings page changes currently in beta testing, several deviants offered suggestions for improvements they'd like to see made, including wanting to be able to see who purchased from them, in addition to when the purchases were made.
  • Feedback varied in response to the Discuss topic. The deviants who said they use folders in Notes mentioned using several folders and/or subfolders, but many deviants mentioned they did not use folders at all, and some were surprised to hear that folders were an option in Notes to begin with.
  • Several deviants mentioned wanting to be able to search in Notes, and some deviants mentioned wanting easier methods to delete Notes.

Discuss!

Portfolio Improvements
One of the suggestions offered in last week's Site Update came from miontre, who suggested being able to create or add skins to your Portfolio. What do you think of this suggestion? Are there other suggestions you have for the Portfolio platform?

I'm not the type to openly complain either, but I’m not too happy with more of these so called improvement you guys are trying to make on the website for your members<?xml:namespace prefix = da />Rage . Why can you  not leave some setting and features the way they are. One example would be for the galleries of what members upload. How come everything I located on the left hand side?Disbelief

It ruins per se the organization of my gallery.

I'm not the type to openly complain about these sort of things, but as soon as my gallery changed and suddenly there was this huge button ruining the organization of my gallery... I was steaming mad.

Do you really think that we're so stupid that we can't move our mouse up to the "Submit" tab and just submit a deviation that way?

It's like having a giant blank piece of wall in the middle of a real life art gallery. :iconotlplz:

Just out of curiosity, is this new deviations page gonna be forced upon everybody even if they tell you that this update is a bad idea?  It feels so cluttered, awkward, and unnecessary, it feels like a bad ripoff of the Youtube video layout... The old layout felt cleaner and was easier to navigate.

I had a user style to get rid of the "More like this" function, back when it was distracting...   now I turned off the userstyle so I can see the view gallery option.  Just out of curiosity, are you gonna bring back the old deviations page if enough people disagree with it?

This new layout on our galleries and the deviations is just plain wretched.  Why do we need a big submit button on our galleries?  Why is the deviations page layout so clustered and bunched together?

Portfolios----The entire portfolio platform is in need of a drastic makeover. It could be so much more but right now, it looks like it came from a time warp circa 1998.
Let's build this into something which REALLY makes DA shine and actually draws artists to DA, let's make this a stand out feature of the site itself. here are some ideas.

Skins Or, as I call it, themes. If we look at the likes of say Zenfolio and Smugmug, both of which are professional hosting photographers portfolio sites, they have a set of skins that are actually good where one can re-arrange the layout. One click and done. (see screen cap below) I can choose from a huge selection of set themes and I also have the ability to edit these themes and rearrange the layout myself. I also can do my whole site on my own by using custom CSS if I am so inclined.

Ability to sell prints directly from my portfolio This is extremely important to me as a working professional photographer. I want to have the ability for someone to purchase my prints and products directly from my portfolio with a list of pricing and everything right there. A shopping cart ability full on WITHOUT the requirement to sign up for a deviantART shopping account. This is how it's done on professional sites like smugmug, zenfolio, 500px, etc. Having to sign up (making it a requirement) turns people away. Having a check box saying "would you like to be notified of upcoming specials from this artist" when there is a shop sale is something else entirely different and also just plain better.

Study what your competition is doing! I know, this may sound like a given but really, I can't stress this enough. Especially study 500px portfolios portfolios.500px.com/ and what they offer which is a lot. Remember, 500px is quite like DA in that it is a community and portfolios is just one of the things which they offer on the site. You'll also notice that they offer an app, in both android and iphone/ipad flavors. It also works with the portfolio and if you haven't looked at it, download it and give it a look over for ideas. You'll be amazed at how clean it is and how fluid. Yes, an app is needed, badly. This is 2013 after all and the majority of traffic these days is mobile.

Incorporate journals (blogs) with the portfolio Make it so we have this ability, that is actually part of the portfolio itself. Where we can make it fit nicely, where someone isn't having to navigate to our DA site itself. let us choose if we want to turn on outside comments from people who aren't on DA and let us have the ability to communicate with clients. Let these comments have the ability to moderated by us, letting us choose what is published and what is not. This allows us to give everyone a look into what we are doing from the professional side of things. very important to communicate, right? Right!

I'll think of more later as I have to run and I will post them.
Cheers!

anytime! I really do think DA could be a LOT better. Portfolios is one of the things which could really draw people in, especially those who take their art very serious yet it goes ignored.... :(

THIS. IS. DISGUSTING.
Why the hell is this a damn update?!
I mean, look at IT. It's ugly, it's clutter, it's taking up space... It's like pimples!
You should change it back! We DO NOT need an art submission button the size of fucking king-kong!
I have bad eyes, and I could see the other one just.fucking. fine.
It was much better with the other way! It's all just in the way.
AND THE JOURNAL SET UP IS FUCKING UGLY AS FUCK. Why the fuck would anyone want to see that?! "Oh, hey guys! I just thought that maybe you'd like a BIG, UGLY, USELESS, OVER-SPACIOUS submit button because, ya know, you guys are FUCKING 20 miles away from the screen and apparently have 6/20 vision!"   I hate, hate, HATE, it! Yeah, I understand it maybe easier to new-comers so they know where to submit things, but people wanna see the gallery folders! Don't move them even more downward! The drop down of the tabs was unnecessary! I am horribly displeased with this redundant excuse of a Site Update! It's just gonna cause some MORE fucking problems! You want that?! You're just creating more problems to fix, which, you don't fix in the first place, you just make another stupid update to take attention away from the others! Just fix the stupid mistake you guys fucking made!

God, it's so ugly and cluttered now. :/

Really, why the hell would I need a giant submit button on my gallery page?!! It's on the damn header! We're not blind! We don't need everything 50% bigger! It just makes it clustered, not organized!

Please, please, please someone make an add-on for the old gallery page. Someone needs to fix the mistake these people make. :/

Uplifting the Profile Tabs (Beta Testers)

Are you kidding me? Again.. what are we 80 and half blind?! Enough with making everything 10 times larger and more hideous. The disgusting look of the folders not having a different background down behind them is distracting when using icons for the folders. Looks like its another deviation. And the giant submit art button? Not needed at all. No one has problems finding how to submit so why add something that big and ugly? The links on the left are huge and hideous, especially with the little icons for them.
Ugly and not needed.

What the hell is dA doing with the site that's affecting certain mobile users, like cell phones?
I can no longer access dA through my phone (a Nokia N97), it's like the site ignores every command I press: messages, notes, EVERYTHING, the screen appears dA greenish tone but empty.

I like the customized skin idea, although whether to enable dA artists to do it for free or with premium membership is questionable.

And please, please, please allow all video/animation artists the capability to incorporate videos into their portfolio! I'll be happy if I could even just incorporate/embed my YouTube videos into the portfolio if there was a way to do that. I like to have all my best works - both 2D and motion pictures - in one place, and that is the dA portfolio.

I love the dA portfolio for it's clean, ad-free, and simple design for the artists to showcase their best works but I feel that the current features do not address all the artists' needs. The demo reel is very important for video and animation artists, so please consider this a feature for all artists.

I've already said that, but I really dislike the new tabs. It ruins everything, even more when we have custom folders whose background color fits dA's background green... plus it was already easy to understand. We all have been new users here, and never complained about any difficulty... plus I think that clearly separating the folders from their content (aka : as it was before !) helps to understand both the gallery's and dA's structure. So please don't add that new system.

Having proper functioning smooth clean mobile app finally would be nice.
The ones that exist are basically just bookmarks of the mobile site. And I don't even think those are official.

I was thinking about "browse more like this" option. I have no idea how you force it to work so well, but i noticed that very often almost all deviations on first couple of pages of search result is from same artist. These images easily can be found in hisa galery, but clogs search result (and rarely relevant anyway). What if you stuck in search some sort of filter, that will skip any deviation from same author when doing "more like this" search?

1.) I don't mind the "More Like This" feature. However, I would like to suggest the option of it being hid unless clicked.

2) I have to agree that ability to edit comments would be wonderful.

I don't mind not being able to delete them, though. It keeps everything relevant and if it really bugs people so much they can hide them.

3) Please get rid of the upgrade links everywhere on free accounts. It's very annoying. It's quite enough to let us know that the option is available or that we can't use certain features, without forcing us to be stuck with the premium advertisement everywhere.

4) Is there any way that you could make it easier to leave groups rather then one at a time?

5) Please make it an option to disable the add media/ add a drawing options in the comment boxes. Thumbnails worked fine enough before.

6) Suggestion, could you make it easier to code the custom boxes on our profile pages and, also, to customize our gallery's look when premium? (Such as a CSS option tab?)

We're not actually meant to be able to code our profile pages. We can do it though, through use of hacks; essentially by exploiting the fact that deviantART's pre-written CSS can be plugged into our profile pages. This is something they could have disabled, so I guess we're lucky it's still available. So considering this, I don't think they're probably going to be interested in making it any easier.

1. The 'More Like This' feature is BEAUTIFUL.... said no one ever. Please give us the option to disable/hide it before I gauge my eyes out.
2. You know what would be amazing? That's right ladies and gentlemen! A feature that lets us delete comments or edit them.
3. And thus, dA thought it would be a brilliant idea to delete only 1 friend at a time... please give us the option to delete them in the 100's at the LEAST. (I've basically hit the 5000 cap... ohgodwhy)
4. Let us have the option to disable media/images being posted on OUR OWN pages/deviations by other users.

Yeah but they won't listen anyway and my one and ony wish which would be helpful for dA, is the EDIT/DELETE comment option since hidding comments only make it worse and makes the site look more ugly and messy, plus so I can get rid of these spams trolls and spammers cursed on my page to clean the slate and to avoid getting more stupid replies from trolls.

That might be nice to see as well... it's like when ripple couldn't monetize their artwork and dA profited from all of it while giving the artist worthless points as compensation. They quit doing that when one deviant spoke up to loud. ;D
