In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

  • For deviants with rebilling enabled on their Premium Membership, the Rebilling page would display an incorrect setting status on the day before rebilling occurred. Fixed by yury-n
  • For a brief period, dashes would be unintentionally stripped from deviation titles. Fixed by Alisey
  • When inputting text into the Real Name field of the deviantID widget, it would only allow 4 letters of the Cyrillic alphabet. Fixed by Alisey
  • Some Gallery Folder thumbnails would only load after scrolling down the page. Fixed by lepidosteus
  • Some Forum threads were created without titles and could not be closed. Fixed by Alisey
  • In Sta.sh Writer, pressing backspace between two differently styled sections of text would add unnecessary markup. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were positive about the relocation of the Fan Fiction category to the Literature gallery.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, several deviants mentioned that they did not gauge any perceived success in regard to their Collections, outside of whether or not it is personally useful to them.

Discuss!

Welcoming New Deviants

Earlier this week, we posted a Poll asking about what most positively impacts people who are new to deviantART, be it a welcome message, getting a Favourite notification, or other things. In addition to your thoughts on that question, we'd also like to know how you think we could make the new user experience better! What do you think we can do to make new deviants feel more welcome and have a positive first experience?

I noticed a bug, the comments have been showing incorrect times, some even state that they've been posted in '1987'

I think that new deviants need to find a way to make friends on this website more easily and to therefore have more support and feedback as I am quite new to this site and have found it so hard to make close friends here! This can be quite frustrating because I want to have friends on this website that I can talk to frequently, give and get feedback with etc

I think my Devart experience would have been over quickly if I hadn't gotten to know some of the people I am glad to call friends her, so a better way to find deviants and people that are similar to you would be helpful.

Lately, on DA, a few mistakes are on a few fanfics. Can you "elect" a few artists to be mistake-checkers or at least, do a automatic mistake-checker please?

DA can have a steep learning curve for new users. I think tutorials should be provided to every new user to assist with their enjoyment and use of the website. For instance, when a new user goes to upload an image, a pop-up (or highly visible link) should appear offering a tutorial on how the upload process works and the tutorial should walk the deviant through the upload steps.

I also think there should be a link given to new users to a list of the most important website rules that deviants should follow.

Hello how did you get that star that is black in the end of your username?

By clicking on the symbol (the star), it will tell you what all the symbols mean. :)

The star signifies that the person is a premium member, so they got it by purchasing a premium membership. There are actually several different symbols used in regards to whether people are volunteers, actual paid admins, or just members who splurged on a "'till hell freezes over" membership. You can find out about all of them by reading: New Username SymbolsAs part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.
Easily Identifiable
At a glance, the new symbols are quickly recognizable. When hovering over a username symbol, a tooltip appears, providing a brief explanation of that user's deviant-type. If clicked, a modal appears, giving a brief explanation for each username symbol, with "Learn more" links that lead to more detailed explanations.
A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categorization, colorful avatars, symbols next to usernames. In our constant re-evaluation of what's best for longtime deviants and new users alike, we do sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves if a makeover for some aspect isn't overdue. Changing username symbols was one of the harder things we evaluated.
I've been testin
and New Username Symbols: Extended ThoughtsTwo weeks ago, we released two new products – deviant and art Mentions and new username symbols.  Gratefully, and as we'd hoped, many deviants are embracing these changes in exactly the ways we'd anticipated, and the ways we ourselves did over the past several months of testing.  While some deviants embraced the changes, it's fair to say that others have felt surprise, curiosity, and maybe even shock.  These feelings are totally normal, but for the large part, there's a hope present.  A positive outlook.  The first steps in a new era that makes the way for our goals in the future, and, at the same time, removes clutter and confusion that new deviants often experience.
As with any change, there are a handful of deviants that don't understand why we made the choices we did

I wouldn't be sure of how to make this function on dA, but favourites don't mean much to me, and I don't like seeing them show up in my inbox. I always get my hopes up that somebody will have left a comment, which are my favourite parts of uploading.

I don't know if this will make anyone feel more welcome, but I think it's a good idea anyway: Send a message to new members explaining that they are expected to upload their stuff to the correct category (and maybe threaten to kick them out if they don't). It's so tedious to see for instance the portrait photography gallery being flooded with screen shots from a game, taken by some 13 year old noob who didn't take the time to think about what category would be appropriate.

^ journals aren't working and it seems that all of our deviations have only been getting a few favs, it may be a glitch. I think it is because it's happening to everyone.

Well, this is actually somewhat embarrassing, because my experience with that "glitch" I caused myself. Long story short, I put the user-made "wink" emoticon into it, so dA wouldn't accept it and I didn't know why, because it said my work my have ALSO contained external embeds. I mean, we're not talking Metal Man levels of self-inflicted pain, but the whole thing was still pretty ridiculous.

A few complaints:

1) The friend manager interface needs improvements.
2) Stop counting journals as deviations. Journals are not pieces. We can't tell how many pieces people have published.
3) Titles should allow diacritics.

Coding, and because people asked for it. Well, not it specifically, but people wanted a way to search for and favorite journals, and the only way to do that was to make them deviations.

The lazy way; certainly not the only one. Or the journals couldn't have the same structure as the deviations and remain separate?

We should create a "tag" for rookie / beginner level drawings and artwork, similar to "What's hot" or "Most popular" tags. It would boost up the motivation for many new artists if they were to get more feedback on their work.

I've found that the best way to get feedback and notice on dA is to comment on others' artwork, so perhaps rewarding or encouraging new deviants to comment on other peoples' work will help them feel like part of the community?  Perhaps rewarding them with a few points or some kind of badge or something would help them get involved, as commenting has always been the best part about dA, to me.  :)

I think for new members usually watchers and favs are important. But the best is the meaningful feedback, that way you feel that someone is actually interested in what you do and wants to join you on the journey of improving.

I think dA could explain some of its systems better. I mean I didn't know about existence of many features for a long time and I'm still discovering new things. And I'm a person who likes to customize and figure out all the features on every site I join, so I assume most new members notice even less. There should be some way to present the features to new members and in the same time not overwhelm them but I'm not sure how to do that.
The features I'm talking about are not the profile/gallery things, because they are quite obvious, but the more hidden ones like Sta.sh, Chat or Channels.
