Site Update: What's Hot (Beta)

Thu Mar 21, 2013, 7:11 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

What's Hot (Beta): Trending Artwork on deviantART

With the vast amount of artwork on deviantART, it can be easy to miss something, and it's common for artwork to get a spike of traffic long after it was originally submitted. Our new “What’s Hot” browse mode surfaces artwork that’s receiving a recent increase in exposure, regardless of when it was submitted.

Change Log

  • There were some layout and styling issues with Critiques and Critique messages. Fixed by yury-n
  • File type restrictions on some categories were fixed. Fixed by shahyarg

  • Deviations in the Message Center would not always display properly when the Big Thumbs setting was on. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Show Images" and "deviantART muro drawing" buttons in comments were briefly broken. Fixed by shadowhand
  • When Browsing with endless scrolling, the page could keep scrolling even if there were no more results. Fixed by muteor
  • Some Cancel buttons on the Settings page required two clicks to take effect. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Clicking the "Add to Favourites" button on deviations reached from the Message Center would sometimes take deviants back to the Message Center instead of adding the art to their Favourites. Fixed by muteor
  • When sending a Note using the Share button on deviation pages, clicking on a friends name in note share on deviation page navigated to recipient page rather than adding name to the address box. Fixed by yury-n
  • For Firefox and Internet Explorer users, the browser's back button did not always work properly, when viewing a deviation by using the "Next" and "Previous buttons. Fixed by muteor
  • When deleting many items in the Message Center, the page did not scroll back to the top of the page when finished. Fixed by muteor

deviantART muro

Sta.sh / Submit

  • Clicking cancel in the middle of uploading several files to Sta.sh wouldn't entirely cancel the remaining uploads. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When opening a stack URL directly, pressing escape wouldn't return a user to their Sta.sh. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Deleting very large stacks would sometimes fail halfway through deletion. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Editable titles and descriptions in Sta.sh now use the HTML5 attribute ContentEditable, to better distinguish that those areas are editable. Fixed by drommk
  • A "Your sta.sh is empty" message would sometimes appear when it shouldn't have. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Stacks did not have a length limit for titles. Fixed by drommk
  • Dragging to select files would stop working when hovering over editable text. Fixed by drommk
  • Some .PSD and .TIFF deviations for which a preview can't be generated would remain with a broken preview image. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Clicking inside the description box, then clicking outside of the box would cause the content to parse incorrectly. Fixed by drommk
  • Some raw camera filetypes (.3FR, .ARW, .CR2, .CRW, .DCR, .DNG, .ERF, .KDC, .MRW, .NEF, .ORF, .PEF, .RAF, .SR2, .X3F) are now supported for submission. Whenever possible, a PNG preview will be automatically generated when uploaded, the same way that previews are generated for .TIFF and .PSD files that have maximized compatibility turned on. Fixed by kouiskas
  • .PSD, .TIFF and raw camera filetypes will now display EXIF data on the deviation page, if they contain any. Fixed by kouiskas
  • On already published deviations, selecting a different category would incorrectly trigger an autosave, even when "update" hadn't been pressed. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Deviants who had "Request Critiques" saved as a default submission setting would still be able to request Critiques after their Premium Membership expired. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Closed contest categories could still be submitted to after the contest had been closed, when using a link directing submissions to that category. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The page counter wouldn't always update when deleting all items on the page. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • Non-romanized characters were being double-encoded when edited. Fixed by Alisey
  • The CSS from the Sta.sh settings page was showing up on deviantART's settings page. Fixed by Alisey
  • When leaving comments in Sta.sh, the sidebar will more actively remove duplicates from the Conversation tab. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were pleased with the addition of the "Import to deviantART muro" button.
  • Feedback regarding the change to More Like This on deviation pages varied. Some deviants said that they liked that the thumbnails were made smaller, but others mentioned that they were displeased with the increased amount.
  • Some deviants would like to create cover images for Gallery folders for Groups. Suggested by BrainyxBat
  • Deviants would like to be able to drag to collect deviations from the More Like This box on deviation pages. Suggested by HyliaBeilschmidt

Writing Journals
When writing Journals to post on deviantART, do you do so from the Write a Journal Entry page, or through Sta.sh Writer? What do you like most about each process? What do you feel could be improved?

For Firefox and Internet Explorer users, the browser's back button did not always work properly, when viewing a deviation by using the "Next" and "Previous buttons.

I'm still having this issue and its becoming quite bothersome when trying to browse my own and others' galleries. I'm a Firefox user.

I also have an issue with my back button when using dA. Each time I hit the back button, it goes to the page I was at previously for just a moment, then quickly jumps to the one I was moving back from.

There's also one more thing I've noticed, when I have a tab or window with dA open in it and I lets say I open another tab to another site that has videos such as Youtube, the video plays for a second or two then the audio cuts out. After a few more seconds, the video crashes. Once I close the tab with dA in it and refresh the Youtube page, the video works again. This is getting pretty frustrating.

For What's Hot, I think it would be beneficial to prevent deviations from showing up on it that are already in the " Popular " Sections ( All time periods / From Popular All Time - 8 Hours )

:giggle: I'm a little late to this party I think with the new site update due out any time now, but could you offer a feature that allows you to select journals to delete all in one go please? Having to delete them one by one is really annoying when you have slow internet mixed with 50 odd journals that need deleting :giggle:

Maybe include them in the "Manage Deviations" area, but have an option to mass delete rather than just put in storage?

The 'What's Hot' feature is a nice addition to gallery filtering options. Unfortunately the results it gives out are too similar to 24 h Popular filter to really be valuable on their own. Maybe changing the positioning formula would diversify it a bit. For example the initial position based on popularity alone could be lowered based on the popularity of the deviaion in the last 24 hours. For example x 0.1 multiplier to the most popular, x 0.2 to those little less popular and so on to give a priority to the older deviations/ones that are not already featured on top of Popular 24.

Regarding "More Like This", is there a chance that maybe it can be changed to where we have more control over what the results are? I don't like having what I consider unsavory thumbnails for some of my pieces. One of them has erotic artwork as the results despite the piece itself not being adult in any way! I feel that sends the wrong message about that piece, and having a little more control over what "More Like This" displays could really help one out in a situation like this, where the results are not only quite inaccurate, but unwanted as well.

I hate 'more like this'. It features old art that I'm ashamed of, other people's art on my page, and it's an eyesore!
Can't you let the artist choose whether or not it appears, or at least what appears inside? Couldn't we make a way to tag art so it isn't included in 'more like this's line up?

I don't even know why I bother anymore, but let's try this again:

Is it so hard to change MLT into a collapsible widget?
If for some reason that is difficult, just swap the positions "More From _____" and MLT. Honestly, that shouldn't be hard at all.
The artist should take priority in their gallery. It is THEIR gallery, not someone's free advertising page.
If I wanted to advertise someone's work, I would simply do a feature.

Both of those options are very simple features that would probably make a LOT of users happy (or those who are wanting a smaller MLT, less intrusive version.
The MLT feature had good intentions, hell, I even liked in in the beginning, but now it's like a parasite.
Something needs to be done. People have been voicing their negative opinions about it, and people are leaving because they feel like they are being ignored.

As for the journal thing. I use the "Write A New Journal Entry" page. I will NEVER use sta.sh. I personally think sta.sh is useless, but I know other people that really like it, so that's fine. So how about instead of "improving" things that clearly already work well, why don't you guys fix the issues that are already there?

Finish what's on your plate first before getting seconds, you know?
