In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Celebrate deviantART's 13th Birthday!

Yesterday was deviantART's 13th Birthday, and while the day itself has passed, there are still several events going on for you to enjoy! You can earn the 13th Birthday Badge by taking part in the "What is your favorite deviantART memory?" prompt on the birthday article, Journal Skins are free for all deviants to use for 13 days, and more!

Coming Soon: Public Deviation Keywords

Coming soon, deviation keywords will be publicly displayed on deviation pages. Until now, keywords have had no functionality other than to serve deviantART's Search.

Making keywords public will give deviants more accountability when submitting a deviation by encouraging them to add accurate keywords to describe the artwork -- ultimately improving the quality of search results. Displaying keywords will also allow members to create common terms around a specific topic or event (for example SharkWeek or ComicCon2013). We also want to give viewers a way to discover more artwork around a common topic.

An added benefit of this change is that it will make search engines (such as Google and Bing) aware of the keywords on deviantART, bringing more traffic to your artwork.

Change Log

  • Various tools were implemented for the 13th Birthday events. Added by fartprincess, kemayo, and DEVlANT
  • When on a deviant's Profile Page, their real name will now display in the browser's page title if they have provided it. Added by adahacker

  • Some issues with loading speed were fixed. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say:
  • Feedback regarding the Profile Tab uplift currently in beta testing was mixed. Several deviants mentioned a dislike for the "Submit" buttons on the Gallery and Journal tabs.
  • Deviants generally liked the idea of being able to add skins to their Portfolio.
  • Some deviants mentioned wanting to add Film deviations to their Portfolio.

Really looking forward to the public keywords. Did a university project with a fellow student this spring about keywords on deviantART and one of the aspects we discussed was the benefits of making the keywords public. So I'm really looking forward to see it in practice. :)

I highly dislike not having thumbnails in my deviantWATCH messages.

It is irritating to not have a preview to see if something is worth viewing.

I had this idea for quite a long time now... Namely, I don't particularly like how the deviantWATCH notification center works. When I try to look at all those new works of people I watch I have to click and change between the tabs until the cows come home to actually see what these people uploaded. When I'm off on deviantart for like few days I have to change between plenty of tabs to see some older works. I don't think many people do that... Quite often it happens that I simply delete all those notifications when they are hundreds or thousands. Another thing is that if one uploads more than one work then all of them appear in a folder so if I want to see those works I have to go in to that folder, and then go back to see something else. It's just a waste of time in my opinion.

Why not to bring more exposure to those recently uploaded works and create some kind of a new tab on frontpage, where all those "what's hot", "undiscovered", "popular" and "new" are found... A tab with collection of works that belongs only to people one watches. That would be totally awesome... No need to delete thousands of messages, to change between the tabs, to go in to the different folders and of course no need to look at the only first few notifications. Instead a beautiful wall with works of people I watch. If I had this kind of wall I would definitely scroll down and view all of these works instead of only recent few.

I hope that you will consider this idea. It would totally change the existing watcher concept.

Btw, I really liked new deviation-interface I met few weeks ago, but don't know why it was only visible while I logged out.

Something else: the following warning when clicking on a link is stupid and insulting

"Now Leaving
You are now leaving Be warned! Out there be monsters.

If this is what you intended, then follow the link below. "

Putting the real name kind of defeats the purpose of having an avatar in the first place. It also ruins the persona an artist may have created...I think that should have been optional.

The 'submit' button all over the place is ugly and stupidly placed- it already exists in the dropdown!

The new update fucking sucks. No offense here, I know you guys are makin an effort to maintain the site for the better but I feel like the changes were kinda unnecessary.
I also hate how everything in custom boxes appear 2x smaller. The fuck was that supposed to do?

Late on this but:

:bulletblue: Suggestion: Give people the ability to filter artwork based on the tags, so they don't have to see it showing up on front page, searchs or their inbox (possibly in other people's journals/comments). People with triggers/an adversion to blood/gore/what have you can avoid artwork based on the tags when the mature deviation option hasn't been clicked because the deviant didn't think it necessary/didn't want to. Watch the butthurt comments about *POPULAR SHOW/MOVIE/VIDEO GAME/COMIC/ETC* or *HIGHLY IMPLAUSIBLE FETISH* just melt away! Of course, this working would probably be dependent on...

:bulletblue: Suggestion: When the new Keyword revamp comes out PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give the FAQ on keywords a comprehensive update and make a comprehensive journal about it so that people are not REALLY CONFUSED about how keywords now work. It'd save a lot of headaches that way. Heck, I think that people are still fairly confused even without the changes, I came across a deviation from some person who put hashtags (much like one would do for Instagram) in the artist's comments, as if it would actually...impact things. :? I don't think that making keywords public is going to do enough to encourage proper keyword usage on its own.

Are the way that the keywords are set up (separate each keyword with spaces) gonna change? I think that it'd be a bit more intuitive to have stuff separated by commas rather than spaces. For example, with the current system, Sonic the Hedgehog is currently...three separate keywords. (sonic the hedgehog video games sega genesis) Somebody might be looking up Genesis in the biblical sense only to find a bunch of unrelated Sonic fanart If it was commas, just putting in a keyword then a comma then going onto the next keyword could help with getting more specific results. (sonic the hedgehog, video games, sega genesis) No biblical mishaps!
