Sta.sh Writer and Comments

Thu Jun 20, 2013, 1:12 PM
We've just launched an integration of Sta.sh Writer into comments on deviantART to Beta Testers! As you may know, Sta.sh Writer allows rich text editing of literature and journal deviations on deviantART, and we are excited to expand this functionality to more areas of the site. Once beta testing is complete, some aspects will be available to all members, while others will be limited to Premium Members.

The new "Add Media" button allows rich text editing and multiple other features to be employed on these comments. Not only does it improve on functionality that already exists in comments, it also pulls in the full power of the Sta.sh Writer application into your comments, completely revolutionizing creative communication.
  • Add formatting to comments with the formatting toolbar!
  • The Emoticons tab of the sidebar gives you access to official and community-created emoticons.
  • Premium Members can add images to comments using the "Add Media" sidebar.
    • The Conversation tab shows deviations already included on the page.
    • The Sta.sh tab shows items in your Sta.sh.
    • The deviantART tab shows deviations from anywhere on deviantART. Up to five deviations can be included in a comment.

Try it out!

Comment Writer is usable on all comments on deviantART! Feel free to test it out by clicking "Add Media" when commenting on artwork, Profiles, Journals, and anywhere else you leave comments.

Any feedback you have can be left on this article, and if you encounter any bugs or issues, please file a ticket in the #devBUG Issue Tracker under the Comment Writer project.

I have question, how do you change the font size? I've seen smaller font in comments and in journals, etc., and I would like to use that tool.

Hello!

I would like to ask something I can't solve at the moment. I submitted an image from Sta.sh. I submitted it only into a group where I'm admin, it's not in my gallery. I had some comments under the image what was written when it was in Sta.sh. But when I submitted the image, the comments disappeared. I would like to insert them somehow. How could I do it? :////

Hi there! If you go to the deviation page of that image, there should be a menu that appears at the top of the comments section that looks like this:

Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 5.31.40 PM by wreckling

If you select that menu and change it to "Sta.sh Comments", like this:

Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 5.31.47 PM by wreckling

The page should reload, and you should see the comments that were left in Sta.sh before publishing. I hope that helps! :)

Will people still see the comments made in Sta.sh after uploading it?

Hi there! If someone comments on one of your Sta.sh files and you publish that file to deviantART afterward, there will be a link on the deviation page visible only to you that will let you switch between viewing comments left on deviantART and comments left when it was in Sta.sh. :)

I have just encountered a bug using this in a group message center.  The project is closed, so where do I submit a bug report?  It looks like a resolved issue with "<da:thumb id=""/>" however I am experiencing it in the voting log comments.  I took some screenshots :salute:.  This is the first problem I have seen and I have been using it everywhere I can ;D

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the formatting tool bar; I'm used to formatting things myself by typing < b > or < i >. I do like the option at the bottom of the comments box "add media" so that stash stays hidden unless I click the button, so it's not too intrusive. While I like the idea of posting images easily in comments, I think these images might be a bit large and could clutter the page a little. Maybe they could be the size of regular thumbnails instead? Or maybe there could be the option to have text wrap around the images so it looks neater and the space isn't wasted.

hello

I've noticed that free users can use the codes Thumbs but with limitations. I have another account which is free and with it I can just put thumbnails in the profiles of other users (including their own), but not in deviations or journals :(. When I post the code here is not see the thumbnail. Why is this happening?. I did not think you would limit this new feature. Many free and premium users alike wanted to use it for a long time. And now they have decided to place is only for premium. I will not be able to keep the premium on my main account :(.

There is some indication that free users can have at least full use of the Thumbs in the comments?

I really liked riding the Ostrich but it seems to have been deleted along with some others. I do like this one moonflower. I thought I would be able to tell what my favorites were but I guess I was wrongTards but it's been a fun test.

I actually had posted this in the suggestion forum also, but thought I should suggest it here too.
Now that pretty much everyone's posted that will, it'll at least be seen :giggle:

I think it would be helpful if there were a way to somehow "fave" certain emoticons (at least [perhaps deviation thumbs as well, but that doesn't seem quite as helpful]) that are not site official. I've found I like many of the deviant-made ones, but my Internet runs so slow that it's a lot more trouble than it's worth to pull up the "Add Media" option and search the particular emote and then wait for it to load before being able to insert.

Perhaps there would be a way to catalog specific ones for future use? For example, I particularly like the upside-down stare and would love to have an extra little tab to the side that contains my favorite emotes, deviant-made and site official.

I love the new addition of the "Add Media" and think that this would improve it even more. ^^

Though I should also say reading comments with links written in this long.username.form/with-link-to-deviations is really messy. I can read basic html but it was already too much for me. I find dealing with this [links] form much better so I changed by my setting to premium!

I have to say that I am not a fan of the Full size Muro.  Here are the reasons:
  1. There is no way to cancel the drawing, I know you can click on the "Done" button and you get back to the actual comment.  If you didn't draw something, then nothing would appear there. (It took me some time to notice that you could do that, I usually just copied the page link and opened a new tab :slow:) But if you have drawn something then you have to delete the item from the comments and from your sta.sh.  Solution: With a cancel button, everything that you have drawn would be deleted and you the file would be deleted from sta.sh.
  2. When you click on "Add a drawing" the canvas size is as big as the screen and zoomed in.  I didn't notice at first how big the canvas is, I saw it when I was done with the drawing.  comments.deviantart.com/1/3789... And the zoom was on 69%    Suggestion:  Either the canvas size should be smaller, (nobody wants these massive images on their profile/deviation/Journal) 600x500px should be big enough   or at least make it obvious how big the drawing is going to be, so the deviants can crop it, before they start to draw something.   And The zoom should be always 100% when you want to add a new comment drawing. comments.deviantart.com/1/3789...

That's all for now :shifty:

I am not sure if someone said this already (there are a LOT of comments hehe) but I think it would be cool to be able to resize the thumbnails of the comments to make them smaller (I don't think people should b able to make them bigger). I made a couple comments with thumbnails and found them too big and cluttery.

Also, it would be awesome to be able to use sta.sh writer to write the artist's comments when submitting a deviation =)

I think it would be better if it included a "Show Images" and "Hide Images" button... like they have with drawings. Because the comments would look too cluttered and slightly tacky.

See what I mean?

Not bugs per se but...

I think it's a bit hassling that this new system cuts off html attributes at the first line. For example, you have to put < sub > before every line for the text to be displayed as such (when you press enter, at least). I think this give deviants with those kinds of quirks in commenting a harder time.

I also use a Chrome extension that acts as a plz account directory
Anyway, I used to be able to drag plz-es (?) to the comment section instead of typing it all out again but it seems I can't do that anymore.

I think it's also a bit hassling that when you "add a drawing" the Muro just pops up instead of the old way where there's just a little tab on the bottom that drops down.

Just a suggestion but I also think that adding buttons that let you turn on html mode and format text should be added as I think not everyone is well-versed regarding keyboard shortcuts yet they already picked up how html codes on deviantART work.

When the drag and drop function can't be used because of the "new comments" then drag and drop function of the extension is certainly broken. :iconfishieplz:  Or let's say it doesn't work as intended anymore, which is another expression of "it's broken" :B
Again tell the deviant who created it that the drag and drop doesn't work anymore.

The drag and drop function is broken for the rich text editing mode, that's what you should tell the deviant who created the helpplz extension, so they can work on something to make it possible again to add plz accounts without switching to the html-mode.

Please read this Comment and answer the questions :please:
and also read the journal

Suggestion:  I talked to a few deviants and they suggested this:  It would be good to have a custom tab/folder/section within the Emoticon tab for Emoticons that we often want to use.  We would be able to highlight Emoticons and those would appear in the Favourite Emoticons section:  When you hover over the Emoticons, little checkboxes would appear, if you check them they would appear in the favourite section if you uncheck them in either place they would disappear in the favourites section.

I also have similar problem as =MirachRavaia has: I can't copy-paste usernames simply because the system make it like this: :devMirachRavaia:

plus I can't use the helpplz because I can't drag and drop emotions from it to the arist's comment :XD: --> This one azzedar-san.deviantart.com/art...

Have you tried to use "ctrl+e" (to activate the html-mode) before you paste the name into the Comment field? :smile

I tested it and it should work again if you use "ctrl+e" and then drag and drop the plz icon into the comment field. Smile
But you might want to contact the creator of the creator of the Extension about this problem, but it seems the deviant doesn't have a premium membership, so he/she can't test it. :noes:

When I copy an emoticon or :iconsomethingsomething: code, I would like to copy the code and not the picture. This is how it looks like when I tried to copy a simple smile emoticon. (I'm going to try the "add media" button for the first time, if it doens't work, here is the link sta.sh/01fapvpc85j0 )

This is fixed. But you won't be able to tell for a little while, because $drommk has a flag up that's blocking me pushing the fix out. So: sometime in the next few minutes to hours, this will just magically start working.

As proof I will paste this in: someone actually has username "somethingsomething" :D (Big Grin)
