The New Way To Write Journals

Fri Apr 5, 2013, 2:26 PM
Sta.sh Writer's toolbar and sidebar have been incorporated into the Write a Journal Entry page to make for a more dynamic journal creation experience!

New! The Sta.sh sidebar now gives you direct access to community-created emoticons! The Emoticon tab of Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been updated to display both official emoticons and recently popular emoticons created by community members. Both sections have been given "Show more" buttons, so that you can explore either section in addition to searching for a specific emote using the sidebar's search box.

Some of the most highly requested features for the Journal submission page have been present in Sta.sh Writer for some time, such as rich-text formatting and a formatting toolbar. With Sta.sh Writer's advanced capability added, writing a Journal becomes even easier than before. All of Sta.sh Writer's tools are available, and because the journal is being created and submitted from the Write a Journal Entry page, creating a journal, adding thumbnails, and submitting a journal can all be done from one page, in one step.

In addition, because of the inclusion of Sta.sh Writer, Journal drafts can be saved to Sta.sh, and then brought back into the Journal page at a later time with the use of the "Open Draft" option in the File menu. This gives deviants the chance to create Journals regardless of constraints, making the feature more inclusive.

Try it out!

You can give this new integration a try by going to the Write a Journal Entry page, which can also be accessed from the Submit menu! Feedback can be left on this article, and if you encounter any bugs or issues, please file a ticket in the devBUG Issue Tracker under the Journal Writer project.

A new way to write a Journal has been launched to Beta Testers, now with an additional feature for emoticons!

Hi, just checking. If I delete a final draft in sta.sh, that wouldn't affect a Journal entry that's already submitted and published to dA, right? 'cause I was just looking, and the number of auto-saved Drafts I have is just insane.

Nope, if you've already submitted the deviation, then the extra drafts can go. :)

How do add descriptions to a journal entry under the journal? Sorry, I'm kinda new to this...

Hi there! You have to use Sta.sh Writer in order to add a description to a Journal. If you prefer to use the Write a Journal Entry page, you can write your entry on that page, go to the File menu, and select "Save Draft". Once you do that, your completed Journal will be in your Sta.sh, and can be submitted from there. Hope that helps! :)

I really like the new way to write journals, but my text doesn't keep within borders anymore - it just goes straight off to the side and off-screen, and renders my journals like this: beldarius.deviantart.com/journ…

Stupid bugs.

I always use my laptop. I've tried everything including copy/paste. There's never anything on the screen besides the site's header.

It is frustrating that I can't write a journal since there's only a green space on the workspace. :/
Is there some way to fix this? I'm sure that my computer have no matter regarding this issue as it's costumized for HD gaming...

I'm new here so this is very confusing for me. A help would really be appreciated. ;w;

Ocasionally when I edit a journal, the options to submit and preview will either freeze up or be blocked out by the website's background color. But it's starting to happen more numerously, so I think it's just a bug.

So frustrating!

I tried to write a new journal entry, but all I get is a blank screen below the writing bit. I'm getting frustrated with the fact that I can't update my journal because, every time I try to write a new entry, there's just grey.
Am I using it wrong or is the system wrong? Please help.

i like this new way to write journals, but < sub > is not working anymore. i might just be dumb but i can't figure out how to get all of my journal to be small.
personally i hate the huge regular text, and the small text just looks to nicer, so i use it when ever i write anything on dA.
if there is an easy fix to this, please tell me. :)

Ok so how the heck does this thing work? Every time I want to write a journal entry NOTHING comes up on the sta.sh or whatever. I legit do NOT understand it and I'm starting to get really frustrated D: Is this a bug or something? Cuz it's really not doing anything and I'm just getting annoyed >.<;

This sta.sh really messes with people who are trying to use the full website on a mobile device; when I try to zoom in, everything spazzes and I can't see what I write.
then I just have to submit and hope for the best.

if there was a way to fix that that would be much better.

Hi there! This should be disabled on the mobile website. Are you using the mobile website on your device, or are you requesting the desktop version?

The desktop one. A lot of the features available in desktop that I use a lot aren't available in mobile.

Ah, that'll be the problem then. Because you're using the desktop site, it's treating your mobile device as a desktop computer. For journal writing on mobile devices, I encourage you to use the mobile website, even if you choose to use the desktop site for other things. :)

I like the new emoticons that I can add to my journals, but sometimes when I want to add an emoticon on the same line it won't let me and skip down to the next line when I don't want it to. I also feel better if they just show chat friendly emoticons. I don't mind Sta.sh Writer though.

I dislike that all Emoticons are displayed in the Emoticon Tab, it should be restricted to Chat friendly Emotes. Since that tab is supposed to show Emoticons that can be used within conversations or that represent an Emotion. Visual Purpose Emotes should only be found when you search for them in the deviantArt tab.
I don't want that my Visual purpose Emotes are shown there. :hmm:

Have you tried contacting the Helpdesk? Maybe they can help you figure out or solve your troubles?

I have a three-year old computer and I've never had any trouble accessing dA so maybe there's some kind of problem that can be fixed

I actually gave up contacting the helpdesk. The replies are normally the same anyway. There are a few admins on dA who really know what to do or how to work with a not-working-system. But it's getting tiresome to go through all that again and again just because they have to use some flashy new setups that will prevent me from doing anything on dA that requires more than a ROM.

Correction on IE version. I am using IE8 on XP pro SP3. IE6 would never load this site. My machine is a rather heavy duty (for its time) workstation with nore than enough hardware to run the software. I have been watching dA for years, and with each newer version, it becomes buggier and slower. Also, for nonpaying members, more ad laden with more unfriendly ads carrying some very nasty code. Shame, shame....

I can no longer edit older journals. All I get is a blank page with the dA menu bar at the top. In the IE6 status bar, is a small yellow triangle containing an exclamation point. Next to the little triangle is the word "Done." My browser no longer understands the journal editor. Therefore, I am done writing journals. By the way, ever since rich text was a feature of the editor, I have used the edit in HTML mode because the rich text mode broke eveything. Fortunately, I keep all my code in a notepad text file and was able to copy/paste.

In conclusion, the editor, like so many other aspects of dA, is horribly broken for those of us who so not have the latest and greatest thing. In effect, the less wealthy deviants have been alienated. For those of us who have been paying subscribers for almost ten years, it is a real slap in the face. But then, dA is not the only presence on the web who has left folks like me behind. It seems to be a well planned trend to shut all but the mall brats and their newfangled gadgets out. I want to say thanks a lot, but I cannot seem to muster the will to do so.
