The New deviantART Comments

Mon Jul 15, 2013, 4:03 PM

Improving Communication on deviantART

One of deviantART's strongest assets is the community's ability to bring self-expression into conversation, pushing the boundaries of creativity to a new level. Today, we've improved creative communication by launching a new way to comment on deviantART, with access to formatting, emoticons, and, for Premium Members, the ability to include artwork and files in your comments.

A Creative Approach to Conversation

Sta.sh Writer has been integrated into comments on deviantART in the form of the new "Add Media" button. As you may know, Sta.sh Writer allows rich text editing of literature and journal deviations on deviantART, and we are excited to expand this functionality to more areas of the site.

  • Add formatting to comments with the formatting toolbar!
  • The Emoticons tab of the sidebar gives you access to official emoticons, as well as community-created emoticons in the Chat-Friendly Emotes category.
  • Premium Members can add images to comments using the "Add Media" sidebar.
    • The Conversation tab shows deviations already included on the page.
    • The Sta.sh tab shows items in your Sta.sh.
    • The deviantART tab shows deviations from anywhere on deviantART. Up to five deviations can be included in a comment.
  • Easily switch between standard comments and rich-text comments by using the Add Media and Hide Media buttons.

Use "Add Media" when commenting to harness the power of Sta.sh Writer in your conversation.

Does being able to "Easily switch between standard comments and rich-text comments by using the Add Media and Hide Media buttons" mean that premuim users can include html images in their comments?

Hi there! Are you visiting from a mobile device, or are you on a computer? If you're visiting from mobile, it is deliberately disabled there, so as to not lag the mobile browsing experience. If it's missing when you're on a computer, then you'll want to file a bug report about it at the Help Desk. :)

I'm always a fan on new things on dA but not this... It kindof sucks that only premium members have this feature.. Other then that I'm sure this feature would be great.  I use it for emoticons, but even that is being shotty..

Aha! So I wonder if the problem I've been having with comments is related to this? Whenever I get close to the 'Add Media' bottom bar, like I can no longer see about 5 lines of my text and without the scroll bar on the side either, I just start writing into an extended, overstretched space that cuts into anything below it. I also can no longer see the preview/submit comment button (other than the tiniest sliver of the submit comment which I'm able to click to upload the entirety of it).

Is there any way to fix this or get it so that it doesn't happen? Because commenting is going to be kind of trickier now - especially with how much I write ^^;

In the "NEW" Comment Area, if one tries to use some of the traditional HTML formatting or linking codes referenced in the Help FAQs, they do not work correctly.  For example: an acronym link to a page on the DeviantArt site generates a 'you're leaving DeviantArt' messsage followed by an error.  If the requirements for HTML formatting and linking have changed, then the FAQ for HTML formatting and linking needs to be updated.  Thank you, ~b01nk!

deviant art is about the worst art website i think I've ever been to. if anyone else agree's and wants true self-expression where you aren't bound by the rules of the self proclaimed "deviant" art site I suggest you check out pixiv its a Japanese

art site that allows all works regardless of content that you can globally filter if you don't like a certain subject.

I think it's a good feature c: but i think we should be able to turn it on and off, or it should just be disabled for mobile devices, because it really slows down my phone. D:

I'm wondering why my comments does not work any more? Ever since the upgrade, my mobile DeviantArt would not let me leave comments, giving me a blank screen every time I try to text something. (It's so frustrating with 20 rounds of trial just to cut-and-paste a message!) Is there something to fix it?

Love the super-flexible features!  This is a BIG leap forward.  Kudos and kudos abunches a lot!

And I know with a big feature launch, you're gonna have bugs and too many people jumping on them with helpful suggestions which you've probably already worked out on your own ten minutes after hitting "Go", but. . .

Holycrappoly, server-side cloud apps for drawing are a good way to drive people completely insane with frustration!

Maybe tweak the app to store graphics on the client's machine as a default and then upload when done?

Otherwise, I'm loving this whole new set of super powers you've given everybody!

I am all for Deviantarts updates and usually enjoy them but this was one update I did not care for at all. I hate how the links don't just look like [Link] anymore... I miss the old emoticon bar. Even though the thumbnail thing was a neat idea and could be useful I honestly dont care much for it either. Also since the links on the entire site look like the half typed out address now. I would love if you guys brought back the old look for links and the emoticon bar... sadly though you probably wont.

[link]  . . . hurmm.  I don't get it.  Links are easy.  What is everyone complaining about?  The new UI is less complicated, yet easier to figure out.  And I love the ability to add illustrative drawing explaining visual concepts via muro.  Yeah it might be nice to add the 'feelings' thing back in under the add media -> emoticons or somewhere; but really, the new comment system is cleaner, easier, and more useful than the previous one.

So much negativity -- i just felt that i should say that i like it.  I guess we all just have a bit of a hard time getting used to change -- even if it's for the best.  So, thanks :iconwreckling:  the new system really is nice and we appreciate all your hard work even if we usually don't say a peep.

My person +like is that I can now easily use a double space.  yay!  hee.  ^..^
