Please note: This change applies only to the Beta Testers who were not included in the first thumbnail size test. Also, this is a temporary change that will be happening later today, and the test will last for one week or less.
We'd like to thank the Beta Testers who helped us test the thumbnail size changing tool! These tests help shape deviantART and we sincerly appreciate your participation and feedback!
In addition to the feedback we gathered from your comments on the size testing tool, this week we're going to continue our research by implementing a test that randomly assigns Beta Testers a different size for viewing thumbnails.
During this time, the Beta Testers in this group will not have the ability to change the size at which thumbnails are viewed. The purpose of this test is so that we can monitor the browsing habits for each thumbnail size, to get a sense of how effective each size is; however, you are more than welcome to leave feedback here on the article.
If you would prefer not to take part in this test, feel free to turn beta testing off for the next week. Thumbnails will return to their standard size if you turn off beta testing during this test period.
Thanks for helping us in improving the deviantART experience!
Assuming this test included Firefox this time, my thumbnails must've been assigned to "100%" i.e. 300px width / 200px height.
So I can't really give feedback on that beyond what I've given in the past:
- Wide images get bigger thumbnails than thin images which is unfair.
- Galleries with thin images get *huge* gaps in grid mode, but also inexplicably in wall mode.
- Scrolling is now required and in large quantity. On a 1024x768 display galleries showing subfolders on the side get just one thumbnail per "row" which is pathetic.
- Unrelated to size, the addition of semi-transparent white backgrounds does nothing to help browsing and ruins images that are meant to have a transparent background.
- I suspect the 50% option in part 1 and assigned to people in part 2 uses a 100px limit, which is not comparable to the old thumbnails where it was 150px matching the width. I hope this test is not being used to suggest people who dislike 50% disliked the old thumbnails.
- If given the choice on a permanent basis I would absolutely take 75% as a preference from the options provided (or beyond that; a balanced setting of 200px width and height, which I currently resort to gallery CSS to provide).
Hate it, by the way.
And I hate it.
The amount of graphic information on the first page of the site is overwhelming, and it's too small to see any of it.
Really, I can't focus on one thumbnail at a time because it's too tiny to really see what it is, and there's too much going on around it that swallows it up. I'm definitely browsing a lot less on the front page.
I really can't wait for this test to be over... :c
