Thumbnail Size Testing Tool

Fri Oct 26, 2012, 5:15 PM
This testing tool was initially rolled out to half of beta testers. As of November 21 2012 this tool has been rolled out to all beta testers. Thank you for your continued feedback!

Hello Beta Testers! As we continue to develop the experience of browsing and discovering artwork on deviantART, we'd like to gather additional feedback. Today, we're providing you with a tool that allows you to test out different thumbnail sizes.

Please note: This is a testing tool built specifically to collect data from Beta Testers and is not meant to be an actual feature. This tool has been made available to a randomly selected group of Beta Testers, and is only compatible with Chrome and Safari browsers.

Two buttons have been added to the top of all Browse, Search, and More Like This pages in the web browsers Chrome and Safari that allows you to change the size at which you view thumbnails. You can change the thumbnails to display at 50%, 75%, 100%, or 125%, at your preference.

Screen Shot 2012-10-26 at 10.22.26 AM by wreckling

Try it out!

You can give this tool a try in Chrome and Safari by going to the Browse page. After trying different options and browsing with it for a while, please answer these questions:
  1. Which thumbnail size do you prefer for the best browsing experience: 50%, 75%, 100%, or 125%?
  2. Do you change the size based on the size of your browser window?
  3. Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?
Thank you! Your feedback will help shape the future of the browsing experience on deviantART.

This option didn't appear at all to me when I went to DeviantArt on Safari. Is it because I didn't log in? I usually use Firefox for DeviantArt, and remained logged in via Firefox the whole time. The option wasn't there on Firefox, either.

For the record, this was done with Firefox version 17.0.1, Safari version 5.1.7, and Mac OS X version 10.6.8.

This is showing up for me for Windows 8 in desktop mode, but not in Windows 8 mode. It is probably caused by the user agent changes ...

Which thumbnail size do you prefer for the best browsing experience: 50%, 75%, 100%, or 125%?
-Generally, I prefer the 75%, as it allows for more viewing, while still retaining a good graphic for the actual viewing.
Do you change the size based on the size of your browser window?
-Yes, as sometimes I put Chrome on fullscreen on my Mac, and I like viewing slightly smaller thumbnails, but with a smaller browser window, I set it to a larger thumbnail.
Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?
-I generally set it to a certain size at the beginning of my browsing session, then change it at the beginning of the next browsing session.

Which thumbnail size do you prefer for the best browsing experience: 50%, 75%, 100%, or 125%?
- I prefer either 75% or 100%. For picture based deviations the 75% is great. I can fit more across the screen, and see enough to grab my attention. For literature deviations 75% is too small. It shrinks the font down teeny tiny and I can't read it well enough to get an idea of the deviation by putting my mouse over it and letting it scroll. But if the font could be upped to the size it is in 100% I think the box size is good.
Do you change the size based on the size of your browser window?
- Nope. I like my icons and such to stay the same size.
Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?
- I changed it a lot at first, but once I found one I liked, I stuck with it.

Works GREAT! I really like how I can zoom into/out of art, gives me more freedom to browse the art, because I have a small NetBook browsing the web is kinda small for me, but I really enjoy this thumbnail! It's great!

The quality of the 125% thumbnail loses quality. Otherwise, it's working very well, and a very nice addition in my opinion wether I'm looking for quality artwork, or if I'm browsing, I can now switch to what works best. Not to mention now depending on which computer I'm using (thus different screen sizes) I can chose the best respectively.

Well, this is a cool 'feature' mostly cause you get to choose something else. Honestly I prefer 75% cause is not that small, but I don't feel limited, I don't feel I can't see enough, I see more deviations without having to scroll and scroll... and scroll and scroll. I don't concider the broser window, at least not at will, I just choose tha size that I feel more confortable with and I leave it like that.
But for I don't like changes that much, I hate to get used to new features. So it's okay if they make something like this, I get to choos,e and if they don't, it's okay (or better) too.

Using Chrome.

1. I use 75%. It allows for be to see the most images without any loss of detail in the thumbnails.
2. No.
3. I leave it one size overall. So, no.

1. I like 75% to browse :D
2. nope. my browser window is always the entire screen ;P
3. if I'm looking for specifics, I use 100%. But that's rare.

- I think 75% is fine when I'm just overviewing, and 100% for when I'm just bored and looking for some interesting deviations.
- I haven't tried it in a different place other than my desktop but I guess it would be useful if I browsed from a netbook.
- I change it as I browse.

This would be like mega useful for the deviations on the Message Center!

1) Myself, I prefer the 75%, unless I'm looking for specific details, then 100% would be what I use. I think 125% is just too big of a thumbnail for browsing, and most of them look blurry at this size.

2) I think the size is better based on the size of the window, but only with 75% and 100%. I don't think 50% or 125% just looks right when browsing. I feel like it's tampering with my eyes. xD

3) It depends what I'm looking for. If I'm looking at pixel art, I'll make it 75% so I get the effect of blended pixels. If I'm looking at photography, traditional or digital, I'll leave it at 100%.

1. I find that 100% Is best for both browsing and viewing quality. But 75% Is better for skimming through to find something you like.

2. If im using a smaller browser window im using a smaller screen (for example a 13" computer works far better with 75% than 125% ) however i usually browse with a maximized browser on my 15" Laptop.

3. Yes I will often change from 125% if im browsing a search or Digital arts, and then switch to 75% if im viewing the newest uploads and want to quickly skimm through.

Over all i think that the ability to switch between the different icon sizes is a useful function and should be included as an actual feature#

I only use Firefox, so I can't help with this. Chrome hates me, and Safari is death.

Also, the first thing I noticed in that screenshot was the Spirited Away cosplay.

I love it! I'm usually a firefox user but since I wasn't to happy about those big thumbnails I had to try them out in Chrome.

1. 75% for comfort browsing, 50% for fast looking.
2. Err. No. I just don't like that big thumbnails - even if my browser window was twice the size D:
3. As implied, I change it from time to time.

Ok I've got an update to my other comment. I tried out the sizes on my iPhone, and the 50% was actually my preferred size there (it's still way too small on a desktop/laptop, but perfect for the small screen). I also tried on my dad's laptop and the 75% is my preferred on it, same as on the desktop.

I think 50% is too small for my taste, everything is tiny and crowded and it's hard to look at everything being so crowdy. I know several stick sites that use thumbs that smal, but they also offer a zoom on hover, which makes finding images a lot easier.

75% and 100% works much better for me :)

125% might be of usage if you are actively searching for something and want to be able to see details immediately.

Generally I notice that the "new" thumb sizes appear much cleaner and more sorted the bigger the thumbs

I agree, the only way I can see 50% working would be if you were trying to find something you've already seen, but not for browsing.

Im loving the 125 size! I can see them without squinting :giggle:
The only images that looked blurry to me were the low rez "render" cut outs of celebrities & stuff that shouldn't be there anyway.

1. Right now, I prefer the 125% size, it feels more like I'm browsing through an art gallery rather than scrolling through a website
2. I do change it to smaller if I minimize my window, but I do that so rarely that it's not an oft done thing
3. I pick a size and leave it :)

My screen is 1366x768 I believe >.>

100 to 125 is good. Do you need to know our current dimensions and resolutions though? I wonder if people answer differently based on our aspect ratio.

At 50% it feels pretty impersonal, like you don't really give a damn about what you're seeing.

75% feels great for some impatient browsing

100% feels really comfortable

125%, while a bit blurry, allows you to spend a little more time viewing each piece, and not just PLOW THROUGH art like it's some kind of CHORE you have to do.

But I like it if there was a button to change or maybe even a sidebar

Like it.

Well… I see the buttons and all but when I press them nothing happens, I expected the size of the thumbs change of size but none of them did when I pressed the buttons.

Might be any Ajax/jQuery bad loading on my end maybe?
