I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Text Brush in deviantART muroWe just launched a new tool to Beta Testers that allows you to paint words onto your canvas in deviantART muro!
The text brush lets you create visual art using words. You can change the text and font from the bottom bar, and you can also set whether or not the text repeats itself continuously. When you click the font button, you'll be prompted with a modal that contains an extensive list of fonts to choose from! The sample text will update based on the font you select, so you can get a sense of what you'll be painting before you paint it.

As an example of the great things you can create with this tool, you can check out $mudimba's I Have A Dream, or watch a redraw of $mudimba at work creating art!

Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. This week the Guardian asks Is Photography Art? Now this is an interesting question and I already know my stance on it, Photography, to me - IS art. It can't not be art. It's creation, creativity, capturing, preserving - but it's Art. I'd be interested to see who agrees with this and who would say no to the Guardian's question - and why. So let's get thinking about it and debate it in the comments on this article...One commenter on the Guardian Article said the following..."Photography is definitely not art. I don't know about you, but Light Painting has to be really unique and awesome in order to impress me. So when I stumbled across the work of Darren Pearson aka Darren Twin - I was astounded at the creativity and simple methods used to create his conceptual photographic pieces. Darren creates LED pictures of Skeletons Skateboarding, dancing and living - exploring what the Mail Online has termed as the bare bones of our daily lives. And it really is precisely that. Darren takes the ordinary, the mundane and the normal of everyday life and lights it up by night by painting bones. Check it out for yourself. The other week, a piece of my writing was selected for a Daily Literature Deviation. If you're curious you can see the article here. I was humbled by that, but my reason for mentioning it in Photography Bi-weekly is that *0hgravity then highlighted a website to me that I found absolutely fascinating. Updates to the New Submit Page, Journal ThumbnailsUpdates to the New Submit Art Page (Available to some Beta Testers)
Please note: The new Submit Art page is being A/B tested -- meaning that we're comparing the effectiveness of two different versions of the feature. If you're a Beta Tester, there's a 50% chance you'll either see the new or old version of the Submit Art page. This is expected behavior and there's no way to switch between the two groups.

The Prints submission menu has been incorporated into the Submit page! This change makes for a complete integration of the submission process, allowing you to upload, submit, and sell your art, all in one process, all from one page.

Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) Film Improvements
Film submission through Sta.sh
The first major change for Film is that Sta.sh is now properly equipped to support film submissions! While it was sort of possible in the past, Sta.sh can now store and submit film files the same way other filetypes can be stored and submitted.
Keep in mind that you have to have film submission privileges in order to submit films to deviantART. For more information on this, please read this FAQ: :faq842:
Film Deviation Page Changes
The second change is regarding the layout of film deviations. The old film layout was designed with an older version of deviantART in mind, and this change places Film submissions back up to speed with the rest of the site. The Film deviation page has been updated to

Thumbnail Size Testing Tool

This testing tool was initially rolled out to half of beta testers. As of November 21 2012 this tool has been rolled out to all beta testers. Thank you for your continued feedback!

Hello Beta Testers! As we continue to develop the experience of browsing and discovering artwork on deviantART, we'd like to gather additional feedback. Today, we're providing you with a tool that allows you to test out different thumbnail sizes.

Please note: This is a testing tool built specifically to collect data from Beta Testers and is not meant to be an actual feature. This tool has been made available to a randomly selected group of Beta Testers, and is only compatible with Chrome and Safari browsers.

Two buttons have been added to the top of all Browse, Search, and More Like This pages in the web browsers Chrome and Safari that allows you to change the size at which you view thumbnails. You can change the thumbnails to display at 50%, 75%, 100%, or 125%, at your preference.

You can give this tool a try in Chrome and Safari by going to the Browse page. After trying different options and browsing with it for a while, please answer these questions:

Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?

This option didn't appear at all to me when I went to DeviantArt on Safari. Is it because I didn't log in? I usually use Firefox for DeviantArt, and remained logged in via Firefox the whole time. The option wasn't there on Firefox, either.

For the record, this was done with Firefox version 17.0.1, Safari version 5.1.7, and Mac OS X version 10.6.8.

-Generally, I prefer the 75%, as it allows for more viewing, while still retaining a good graphic for the actual viewing.
Do you change the size based on the size of your browser window?
-Yes, as sometimes I put Chrome on fullscreen on my Mac, and I like viewing slightly smaller thumbnails, but with a smaller browser window, I set it to a larger thumbnail.
Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?
-I generally set it to a certain size at the beginning of my browsing session, then change it at the beginning of the next browsing session.

- I prefer either 75% or 100%. For picture based deviations the 75% is great. I can fit more across the screen, and see enough to grab my attention. For literature deviations 75% is too small. It shrinks the font down teeny tiny and I can't read it well enough to get an idea of the deviation by putting my mouse over it and letting it scroll. But if the font could be upped to the size it is in 100% I think the box size is good.

- Nope. I like my icons and such to stay the same size.
Do you change the size as you browse, or do you pick a size that works for you and leave it?
- I changed it a lot at first, but once I found one I liked, I stuck with it.

Works GREAT! I really like how I can zoom into/out of art, gives me more freedom to browse the art, because I have a small NetBook browsing the web is kinda small for me, but I really enjoy this thumbnail! It's great!
