We've been monitoring performance and feedback since launch of the new deviation page to A/B testing, and we wanted to provide an update in regards to how the new deviation page has been performing, as well as following-up on community feedback and response.

Some valid concerns were raised by the community during this testing period and, moving forward, we'll be thinking through how to best address these concerns. In the meantime, there are a few points in particular that we wanted to share with you:
  • More From This Artist was well received by the community, and performed exceptionally well.
  • Deviants did not like having to scroll to find the Favourite button, and there was a noticeable difference in the amount of Favourites coming from deviants with the new deviation page compared to the amount of Favourites from deviants on the old deviation page.

Moving forward, we'll be keeping the aspects of the test that were successful (such as More From This Artist, More from deviantART, and the associated cleaner sidebar styling), while removing the aspects that need further refinement and replace them with the familiar layout of the previous deviation page.

Please know that this is by no means an endpoint. This is a way to launch the changes that worked well, while allowing time to further think through the areas of the design that were problematic.

Thank you for your help in testing the deviation page. Your continued participation and feedback helps create a better deviantART, and for that we are entirely grateful.

Also when sending links why does the whole thing show? Can you at least change it back the old sending link?
Good example:
The whole link shows.
The old sending link didn't show the whole thing.
I prefer the link format when it didn't show the whole URL.

I don't think we need to see the whole link..I know some website links that are super long. And I think the last thing da wants is to basically be clustered with long links in the comment section. Unless you are just talking note wise I don't see why we should need to see the whole link. I liked it better when you sent a link it was just "[link]"

I like the updated design much better than the previous one being tested, some of the widgets were awkwardly placed and I'm glad to see everything seems to have been tied together nicely.
I'm curious about something: when there were tabs under the deviation, I thought I saw a feature under the "Details" tab that told what program the artist used to create their piece. (i.e. "Created with: Photoshop" or perhaps it was "Submitted with: Photoshop") I think that that would be very useful to have under the "Details" section, so more popular artists wouldn't have to keep answering that same question over and over.

I think that'd be virtually impossible to do seeing that you could have worked with SAI and opened the file in Photoshop, to edit it. Also, I don't think PNG files, JPG or Gif files save the program worked with. u.u :iconedwardtongueplz:

I didn't really explain myself, did I? I meant the artist could fill out that information themselves if they chose to, sort of like what's shown here. It would take a little longer to submit something if you wanted to fill out everything, or worked with a variety of different mediums, but I think it would be a cool option.

As someone who has always seriously disliked "More Like This", I would prefer it if "More From DeviantART" could be removed entirely; I really don't like having thumbnails of other peoples' work displayed on my deviation pages, especially since, no offence to anyone, I find certain content offensive, and I really don't want thumbnails of such content displayed on my deviation pages. I also feel strongly that the only work which should appear on an artist's deviation pages is work from that artist, NOT anyone else's work!

Although this is a completely different subject, I'm going to mention it here anyway, rather than posting another comment elsewhere:

Could non-Premium members please be given the ability to switch off "Promoted"? Fortunately, "Promoted" hasn't bothered me too much; however, "Promoted" appeared in my Message Centre the other day, and the first thumbnail that appeared in "Promoted" was a picture of a Transformer, or some other giant robot.

No offence to those who like Transformers, or giant robots in general, but I personally have absolutely no interest in Transformers, or any other kind of giant robot, at all, and there are no pictures of giant robots of any kind either in my gallery or my Favourites gallery. Admittedly, I'm not entirely clear on how "Promoted" is supposed to work, but I don't think it's supposed to promote pictures of giant robots to someone who, it must surely be obvious from the work in their gallery and their Favourites gallery, has absolutely no interest in giant robots at all. Again, no offence to those who like giant robots!

I afraid I see no point in having work promoted to me which I personally have no interest in, so I would really appreciate it if all non-Premium members were given the ability to switch off "Promoted".

Thank you so much for moving the favorite button back! And also for putting the stats back on the right side, I really hated their Youtube-like design and how they were placed right under the deviation. They look awesome now! I hope you're not going to change that part anymore.

I wish you'd change the "More From" part of the page though. It's great that "More from This Artist" has gotten bigger, but "More from DA" is still very annoying. It would be nice if you could make the "More From" part tabbed, so that when we open the deviation page, we would only see MFTA, and we'd have to click on a tab to see "More from DA".

Please don't change the  deviation page anymore, it's nice as it is NOW. (except I need colors on buttons back like red for 'remove' and so on)
Having to scroll down to find the fav and remove from messages buttons was killing me.
If I have to scroll down ever again to remove the deviation from my messages, I won't be willing to click on the thumbs anymore as far it would be easier to delete them directly from the message center. And THAT would be bad performance.

I am very glad you moved the favorite button back to its original place, it was very uncomfortable having to shift around and find it under the username when it's been off to the right for so long. The only thing I miss about the new updates is probably the views/# of favorites/downloads being in the section a little off from the description. It was clear and easy to see, and that was probably the main thing I miss about the new update.

"we'll be keeping the aspects of the test that were successful (such as More From This Artist, More from deviantART"

I don't think More from Deviantart was that successful I HATE IT with a passion and it really bugs me and kinda hurts to have it on my art. If I want to feature an artist I find worthy I will link them myself, I hate it so much. It's really not fair that we have to give up views and potential new watchers because of it. If you have it on our art it should be hidden and only seen if the person wants to use the feature, or give  us an option to hide it on our own art. :c

You guys seem to be listening, I really hope you get rid of it or fix it. The only reason it's not getting as much hate as it did back when you first put it in as More like this is because everyone was happy you moved it. Don't be fooled most of us still hate it and want it gone.

But hey I really love the new page, don't get me wrong, it's just the biggest thing that bugged me is still here and I hate that. it drives away watchers.

I am very glad to see the EXIF data back on the same page for photo's. (The ergonomics of rolling the scroll button vs<quite a lot of clicking & looking> are far improved)

However, as someone who comments & critiques images though, I would like to see the TIME data from the EXIF returned. Most intelligent photographers  have this correctly set, and it is really helpful in understanding the creation of an image, and thus critting it meaningfully.

BTW, all your designers and developers have read "Tog on Interface", haven't they? (www.amazon.com/Tog-Interface-B… It is a little old ito the computer world, but he absolutely nails the behaviour of the humans in the CHI equation.

BTW 2, any time you want to look at the performance of the deviation page on high latency links, feel free - it gets very broken, vs just slow!

From what I see more from deviantart is not as well recirved as you pretend it is. Many do NOT WANT TO ADVERTISE FOR OTHERS. WE AY O REMOVE ADS, THIS SHOULD INCLUDE ADS FOR THER ARTISTS. I don't want their work on my pages, or any that I am looking at. You want to keep it give us the option to hide it.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised. You actually listened to what people were saying about the Deviations page layout!

While I imagine you guys still plan to fiddle with it (which is what I could get from this update report), I'm glad you put the favorites and category buttom/line back where it was. Like I had said before when the new page was implemented, I don't mind anything about the right bar/side of this layout, including the "More from this Artist" and "More from Deviantart" (which I supposed it's "more like this" renewed) parts, so I'm perfectly fine with that.

These new deviation pages look much better now! :) I'm glad I no longer have to scroll to find the "edit" button or share the description space with all those tabs. Thank you for listening to us!

One thing I would suggest changing, however, is the size of More From This Artist/More From dA. The location is fine, but it's still just a bit too large/wide for my tastes. I think it would look much nicer if both sections were either two thumbnails wide instead of three (six thumbs in all), or, more preferably, if they were both the same size as More From This Artist formerly was. Having nine large thumbnails for each section is kind of distracting, and I often find myself having to scroll even further down the page just to find the details/stats section because MFTA and MFdA are so much longer now.

Another suggestion I'd like to make is having the ability to choose which works show up in More From This Artist, as well as the ability to remove/replace deviations in More From DeviantART (because sometimes deviations pop up in there that the artist disagrees with and/or doesn't feel comfortable showing to their audience). For the former suggestion, I was thinking that there could simply be an additional feature in "Manage Deviations" that would allow you to pick and choose the works you want to have shown. As for the latter, it could simply be a pencil tool that would allow you to hide any deviation you don't want to display, and then once it's hidden, it would be replaced with a different deviation. (I have visual representations of both of those suggestions here and here).

I've also noticed that More From This Artist sometimes has only six thumbnails instead of nine, whereas More From DeviantART always has nine thumbs. That might be something that needs to be fixed.

Overall, though, I would say that these updated pages are a significant improvement over the older ones. Thank you for all your work!

Moving the Favourite and Remove from Messages buttons felt really wrong to me. The new update, putting them under the picture, just annoyed me, making it much harder to go through my messages then the previous set-up. If you really intend to go back, then very many thank-you's!

I did like the More From Artist/ More Like This split, and how it is now I can find other pictures of the like (great for me, as I prefer fanart) and get an idea of what the artist usually draws at a glance. Thumbs up.

I still have a problem with being forced into testing without my consent or knowledge, and with no way to back out, but... I guess that's just a part of being a part of dA these days. Just putting that back out there...

Though I do agree with some others that I'd like the "remove from messages" button to be slightly less prominent so it's not as easy to click it by mistake.

The three column journal layout does not work as advertised. The left column is not needed. The right column is squashed. The three columns do not scale well from a window to full screen. All other pages and widgets work fine in Chrome type browsers but are broken in IE 8. Site was tested in SRWare Iron 28 and IE 8 running on XP Pro SP3 with AVG.

While I'm glad the favorites button is back where it belongs, I'm flabbergasted by the descent in favorites. Does no one use the drag and drop option?

Hmm...then again, you can't (at least for me) use the drag and drop option on a tablet or phone.
